In the haze of a mid October sun, the KCCGD wagon train rolled up to the wild west of Shawnee, Kansas to watch some ball at Arizona’s Neighborhood Grille and Bar.  The rustic setting of the place provided a decent setting for the shootout that was to become.  There were some disappointments for the day, including the saloon we witnessed them in.  But we buckled down, circled the wagons, and set up post for some college football.

The alumni crew were coming out of the woodwork for the week’s blogspot. Mucho mojo was needed to help push K-State over Texas Tech and going to the Manhattan homestead of Kite’s (or at least the KC Area version) was part of the mix. We were definitely intent on reliving the magic of college as well as the magic of last year’s blogspot with K-State over Texas. Pick It and Stick It: First Friday And Stinky Spreads

And here we go with another week ‘o picks.  So the Yeti is rushing here a bit to get outta here to soak up some First Friday action, but the Saturday football action is all passing. Not like all things must pass, but more like Big 12 Conference play will be kicking of this weekend and some major bombs will be dropped in the air.  Josh Freeman knocking out quaterback records over at K-State is just one example. With much of the action rolling up to the big Mizzou vs. Nebraska, the Yeti wouldn’t be surprised if the offense spent this weekend in the Big 12 will top the rest of the BCS conferences combined. Barspotting: Hey Go Fly A Kite’s, Wait A Minute Wasn’t This….?

Okay so I was at Kite’s earlier this year to cheer on K-State and only saw then tank hard to Louisville, but it wasn’t an official barspot.  Some of you may be asking, “Hey that used to Rusty’s Last Chance!”  And yes, we were there for a barspot last year.  But the place has name changed, I didn’t get any pics, and most importantly last year K-State beat top 10 ranked Texas.  So I’m hoping to rub off some of that magic this year when they take on No. 7 Texas Tech.  Boy OH boy I’m pulling out all the stops this week.  Purple shirt, purple boxers, purple pens, Purplesaurus Rex Kool aid, the whole shebang.  All for the defense.  Anyway, here’s Kite’s:

Pick It Standings Week 5: College Football And Picks Crash of 2008

The turbulent economic turmoil faced in this great nation has finally trickled down to all that is near and dear to our hearts here at the KCCGD. Much like the market, many high stock football teams tumbled over the weekend and panic is pulsating through the minds of many a sports junkie. Looking at this week’s standings, we can see that Cabbottmtf is turning into the Warren Buffett of pick ’em with yet another consistent week while Krizzou makes up a step with some apparent wisdom from Alan Greenspan.  The Purple Yeti?  Well, it seems he was too busy checking out Sarah Palin’s ass.  Somebody bail him out STAT.

As for hot button topics from the weekend, we’re gonna roll through it O’Reilly/Colbert/Olberman style:

  • Gary Chandler from K-State was arrested Saturday for driving with a revoked license.  The former Big 12 defensive newcomer of the year, apparently lied to the cops and then came clean about his name in the process.  Now being an alum from the ‘ole KSU, all I can say is, “WALK!  Everything is about a 15 minute jaunt from each other! DUDE!” Ron Prince gave Gary his walking papers until his legal troubles are fixed and my guess is this incident will tacked on to Prince’s dossier.  The case for delivering Ron Prince’s walking papers at the end of the year is quickly stacking up.
  • The toast of college football this week is the BIG 12!  That’s right, 3 of the top 5 are Big 12 boys will Oklahoma, Missouri, and Texes rocking it respectively.  The Big 12 blogger Tim Griffin pointed out this morning on the ESPN College Football Insider Podcast that all of the ranked Big 12 teams (6) are facing the unranked teams to start out conference play.  Chances are we’ll get at least one or two upsets.
  • While the Yeti was busting a sweat tonight at the gym, a large barrel chested man sporting an Oklahoma football shirt was squeezing out a quick spin on the bike.  Yeah, so what?  Welp, the Yeti also follows pro football and he just had to see the start of Monday Night Football.  After popping on the game, Oklahoma decides to switch up and run the elliptical.  But instead of choosing the machine in front of the game, he squats right down on the one in front of Dancing With The Stars!  That alone tells me that the Sooners will have at least one loss and just may miss the Big 12 Championship game.

Another stunning week of college football flew by and we here are the KCCGD spent most of the day just recovering.  Apparently the football gods forgot to tell the teams that upsets are supposed to happen one or two times per week.  What wasn’t very upsetting was our time with the folks at Ugly Joe’s.  Krizzou, Jolly, Tyson,  and company helped make this barspot one to remember.  So let’s piece together what happened.

Kansas Talent Caged To KU, What Up Ron?

Cat’s Meow No More, EPIC FAIL

So Jeff Martin wrote a piece today in the KC Star stating the obvious:  K-State recruiting is hurting bad, especially in state.  The article talks about how all of the in state talent is heading to Jayhawk country or out of state.  They even had Jeremy Crabtree from Rivals.com come out and say the same thing.  So yup, Ron Prince is riding the JUCO train now.   Nothing wrong with that, right?

I’m not so sure.  Prince was quoted as focusing on in state talent at the beginning of his tenure and then he double backed on his words by preaching the balance of in state and JUCO kids.  Maybe that’s why some recruits ran away, like Chris Harper.  His family didn’t trust Ron and he moved to Oregon.  Is he talking the talk and not walking the stomp?  What’s up?

I understand that when you’re losing you need to bring in talent wherever you can get it.  But when you talk about bringing in the in state kids and not following through on that, you will lose credibility.  Nobody expected KU to do so well and the Wildcats will have to deal with that but if the recruits don’t trust the coach then what does that say about the talent on the field?  So far, not so much.

The knife in the eye from the piece was Harper stating that he was open to going to K-State if  Snyder was there.  Double Ouch.

Barspotting: Some Of The Football Watched Will Be Ugly, Joe’s

This week takes us to what used to be Fuzzy’s South. The last time I was there, I left it pretty fuzzy. But that was then, now it’s for football. With 2 of the 3 local teams out on shore leave this week, K-State is the only one left ready to roll. Hopefully they’ll take out their frustration Louisiana-Lafayette. But who knows? It may be ugly for the Wildcats too.

Pick It and Stick It: Nothing to Shake a Kid at

After watching Louisville shake K-State worse than Leon Patton’s kid, a new found fire sprung from within the Yeti’s belly. This fire does not encourage me to abuse a child, however, it does inspire me to spit fire on the pages of picks laying in front of me this week. By all means, I’m not making light of the serious situation that Patton and those involved are faced with, but it would at least nice to see that kind of rage out on the football field. The Cats laid down to Louisville and their running game (the much hyped about, trying to bolster up type game) to a back seat to Josh Freeman laying out interceptions for the Cards to pick up. With no running game, Josh was gonna get nabbed for at least one. I blame Josh for one of the two he tossed. He are the other kind of picks:

Barspotting: Two Spots, One Week, Zero Time (except for Willie’s)

One quick note before the Saturday spot.  The ole KCCGD crew is heading out to Kite’s (formerly Rusty’s Last Chance) to watch K-State vs Louisville.  Freeman got some front page love yesterday on espn.com as the Big 12 Blogger Tim Griffin talked about Josh being up there as one of the league’s best quarterbacks.  He also picked the Wildcats with the shnide over the Cardinals.  It’s on the road but they travel well and Louisville may be out a couple of offensive linemen for the game so I’m with Tim and giving the Yeti Schnide to K-State.  Here’s Saturday’s spot:

Pick It Standings Week 3: I Thought Baseball Season Was Over

Here’s the updates to the pick it and stick it set. The picks were more even this week as things are beginning to iron out in the top 25. Still, there may be some upsets lurking here and there. There’s also the matter of the special rescheduled match up of the rated Texas Longhorns and Arkansas Razorbacks. I’ll tell you right now: Hook ’em Horns!

Okay, so I know the SEC has about 5 teams in the top 10 but what’s up with the Auburn vs Mississippi St game?

Chris Todd pitched a complete game and so did Wesley Carroll in a losing effort. I could find any stats as I’m wondering how my hitting did on my College Football Baseball Fantasy Team performed. What I did find is a history of 3-2 scores in College Football. Note the epic battles of Kansas State versus Iowa State in the 1920’s with the Cykes winning both struggles. I wonder if we’ll see that at Arrowhead.

The overcast clouds could only hint at to what was to come for another day of college football as I pulled into the parking lot Saturday morning. For some teams, the rain was hard and heavy. Trekking around the Kansas City area for the first year of the KCCGD blog last fall, I’ve seen many ups and downs for the K-State Wildcats.  Well, down for losing to Auburn, up for beating (owning) Texas, and all downhill from there.  So rolling into this year, I would have to say that expectations are a little lower.  Albeit it’s not as bad as some other publications state, K-State might actually make a bowl this year.  All with the help of some major talent pump.  Let’s take a look at the Wildcats.

Ending the Year on a High Note and Some PBR

So I’m sitting here on the couch contemplating getting ready for the New Year’s Eve rounds I’m making when I realized, “Hey I haven’t posted to the KCCGD in awhile!” Believe it or not, I actually did watch college football in the last month and yes I did go to some bars. I fell off the wagon with holidays and what not and I’m getting a head start on my resolution: posting more to the blog! So, in the offseason there’ll be some new additions and news posts and any other junk that fits our little world here. Manhattan Isn’t What It Used To Be, And Neither Were The Wildcats

The Purple Yeti likes to take one weekend out of the year to relive what it’s like in the Little Apple and last week it was time to make the trip.  The garage door opening up was new to me as there was much change from what I was used to back in the Yeti days of Wildcat prominence.  Please note that the smoke you see was from Chase and Co. smoking K-State on the field.
