Mascot Monday: Ramblin’ Wreck and Buzz

Off season continues for college football and we’re rolling through Phil Steele’s Preseason Top 40 for our Mascot Mondays.  This week, it’s #33 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and the inanimate Ramblin’ Wreck and buggy Buzz.  So we ran into one of the few abstract mascots last week and now we have something solid in an old timey car.  On top of that, there’s a giant costumed Yellowjacket.  Where one was born from the history of its region, the other comes from the affectionate nickname of the products of the students work in South America.  Buckle up, folks, we’re going for a ride through the ATL.  Don’t forget the bug spray.

Magnifying the Expansion Part 5: And the Winner Is…

So who all will fit in the glass slipper that the Big 10 is dangling out in front of the college football landscape?  In our series, we talked about how the traditional Big 10 aims to scratch their expansion itch and what could happen to every conference around them when they do.  Today we look at the candidates either actively or inactively campaigning to be ones who get the golden ticket of an invite.  There are oddball choices as well as solid, sensible choices in this competition.  Not all will be covered, but we’ll see the ones that matter.  Then after that, the swimsuit competition!  On with the show!

Bowl Pick It and Stick It 2009: Chucking Gutter Bowls

Bowling_andrew134_web

Here we go!  Bowl season starts tomorrow and we got your Bowl Pick It and Stick It ready to go!  It’s the somewhat the same format as the regular season.  For each of the 34 bowl games, you will need to assign confidence points.  So for whoever you think will win the strongest, should get the highest confidence points and vice versa for the weakest.  What’s different is the you need to pick the winner straight up.   There is no spread points to play off of for the bowls.  So head on over to Yahoo! Fantasy Sports and sign up!  We’ll go over the bowls after break but first, here’s the info:

BCS Goes Bowling, Finally!

bcs-logo

We here at the KCCGD decided to split off the BCS Standings from the Pick It and Stick because of how important the BCS announcements were over the weekend.  We’ll go in depth into some of the games and the final standings.  Later on either this week or next, we’ll take a look at the bowls and maybe a specific Big 12 bowl post.  Right now, it’s BCS time.  As eveyone should know by now, the BCS Championhip game will be held in Pasadena, California at the Rose Bowl and it will be between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Texas Longhorns.  It’s not without controversy, however.  First, here are the final standings:

Pick It and Stick It: Holiday Nosicles

RudolphTheRedNoseReindeer

Here we go into the last week of picks and there’s not that many to choose from.  That’s a good thing, though, because most of our focus is squa’ on the holidays.  Turkey Day is over and it’s a full bore Christmas conga line.  Most of our shopping is done and that’s a first for the KCCGD crew.  Usually it’s a last minute managerie through the isles of crappy malls and Targets.  Since we’re done, we are going to focus on the nicer things for the holidays.  Like  bowl games. After this weekend, we’ll find out who will play who and when.  Tune in as we will make our list and check it twice for bowlspots to watch football games on holiday nights.  But first, here’s the last pick set:

Pick It Standings Week 10: Yawnster of a Weekend

lady-yawning

We’re back this week with another round of Pick It Standings.  Not much of a shake up this weekend in terms of college football and it’s reflected in the pick set.  Really when you think about it, there was no real big upset over the weekend, unless you count USC falling down hard to Stanford.  Everybody else won as expected and they are turning to corner for the home stretch of the season.  This is going to be a tight one to the end, both for the BCS race and the Pick It race.  Here’s this week’s lap:

Pick It Standings Week 09: Candy Hangover

halloween_hangover

Halloween is over and we’re still feeling the hurt over the load of candy and Joose.  We rocked many parties and kinda wished we were at one that had Kansas State at Oklahoma on.  Oh well.  We are still enjoying the various fun sizes of candy.  Our favorites include Snickers, Butterfinger, and Milky Way.  But enough about candy.  We’re sweet on the Pick It Standings now.  We also have some tasty BCS standings to go over as the polls turned sweeter to some winning teams over some other teams that had some sour victorious.  Get your toothbrush ready, you’ll need it after this.

Pick It Standings Week 08: Post Traumatic Grill Syndrome

grill

Another week of football came and went and in between the drizzles, the greasy smells, the turning leaves, and bands hitting the bricks, we gots ourselves some pick it standings sizzling on the grill.  So let’s munch on these tasty numbers and see what they turn up.  Let’s hope they don’t turn our stomach.  No room for leftovers, however, as we are merely just practicing for Thanksgiving.  It’s still a month away, you know.

Pick It and Stick It: Double Barrellin’ It

Ridin’, ropin’, buckin’, bustin’, and pickn’!  Get used to it folks.  The closer and closer we get to the Red River Rivalry the more we don the chaps and start spittin’ some chaw.  Soze what wez got here is one of the best rivalries in the land.  It may not be number one with a bullet but it certainly will place at the state fair.  And in this here game’s place, that would be the Texas State Fair.  So hold on to yer hats, buckaroo, there’s gonna be a shoot out come high noon tomorrow!

Arlight, enough cowboy poetry.  Let’s get to the plate of beans for the weekend.  Usually the Red River Rivalry is a close one and the spread makers deems it so this year with a measly 3 points.  The rest of the Big 12 action may be in the shadow but there’s still some potential barn burners.  Take a looksie at Missouri and Oklahoma State.  Or even Kansas and Colorado.  But enough about that.  The other big rivalry is USC and Notre Dame.  This should put whoever wins back on the map to the BCS title.   A map that’s currently shared by Virginia Tech.  They will have a hard time holding onto it when they face Georgia Tech.  Pick well, peeps, and enjoy the games!

Barspotting: Check Out These Hooter’s

hooters

It was bound to happen.  It could only be so long before we found out way there.  And so, thanks to your voting, we will be barspotting for KC College Gameday at Hooter’s.  If you don’t know what it is, then you probably never will be there.  Essentially it’s vehicle for putting women in tight clothes and making them overly friendly.  Word around the street, though, is their wings and cheese fries are top notch.  Being the guy magnet it makes no apologies to be, they also have sports packages available.  So we’re gonna find out this week if Hooter’s is a great place to watch sports as well as the talent.

Barspotting: A Little Birdie’s Pub Told Me To Go There

birdiespub

This week’s barspot brings a suburban locale.   Usually in suburbs around this time, you smell the freshly mown lawns and the first scents of fall.  You even hear the birds chirping.  In that spirit, we will watch the action at Birdie’s Pub.  Um let’s see here.   Another way to think of this place is that we are going to a golf players fantasy sports bar.  So while we see the golf season wind down, we can see the college football season pick up.  Okay, now we’re just blabbing on.  We really don’t know what’s in this place because we’ve never been there before.  Hopefully, the local crowd won’t chirp to much while watching the games.  We also hope that Birdie’s does better than par for the barspotting course.  Now bring on the beer cart babes.

When: Saturday, September 19 2009
Time: 1:00 pm ish
Where: Birdie’s Pub, 8889 W. 75th Street, Overland Park, KS 66204, 913.648.4011

Games:

Notes:  Alrighty some of the better games are happening tonight and tomorrow.  The Georgia Tech and Miami game should be good but we’re not sure if a fight will break out or not.  We know the Battle for the Milk Can can be rough and it’s up to Fresno State to spoil Boise States frothy pour toward BCS busting run.  The Governor’s Cup is up for grabs when Louisville heads to Kentucky.  Too bad both programs are a little blah right now.  Kansas will handle Duke better than the basketball contest.  The O-Rourke-McFadden Trophy (a leather helmet) is what Boston College and Clemson will be shooting for Saturday.  The Trophy first showed up just last year.  Missouri will roll.  Florida will take out its frustrations on Lane Kiffin’s smack talk against his Tennessee team.  In what will be the game of the week, we will see two great defenses pound on each other with Nebraska going to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech.  Due to a scheduling difference, Texas Tech agreed to play Texas this weekend.  For us it means an early treat and a revenge game for the Longhorns’ Colt McCoy.  UTEP and New Mexico State ride the Battle of I-10 to vie for the Silver Spade.  Finally we get Kansas State heading to UCLA.  So the starting QB is out with a broken jaw and 4 other players are suspended from UCLA for this game.  I still think this game has home victory written all over it.

Once again here are the facebook pool results:
