My body is still out of whack due to the daylight savings time change Sunday. Hey, at least I got an extra hour of sleep work in. It seems like some people around the college football landscape are also adjusting. Who knew that the loss to Kansas coupled with the time change forced Colorado to fire Dan Hawkins? That and many more half-asleep wackiness on this week’s Crib Sheet. Read on, my friends, read on.
- Here’s a good read on the Sagarin ratings, the computer rankings the BCS uses, and its history of tweaks. The blowout of Utah by TCU last week is a good example. They will get the bump for strength of schedule and not margin of victory. Of course, that’s why the human polls will balance it out.
- Hold on to your hats, South Dakota is joining the Missouri Valley Conference for football starting in 2012. Finally the South Dakota/South Dakota State rivalry will be renewed!
- As I watched Oklahoma State and Oregon roll their teams last Saturday, I couldn’t help but notice the large signs used on the sidelines for play calling. The New York Times tells up about them.
- It looks like Heisman hopeful Cam Newton has allegedly solicited cash from Mississippi State during his recruitment last year. Newton’s current team, Auburn, says he didn’t do anything like that with them and he is clear to play. With the recent Reggie Bush issues, everyone is mega sensitive to any kind of cash payouts to college athletes. Now Florida is coming out and saying that Newton was kicked out for cheating. This is getting smellier.
- It looks like the death of Notre Dame student Declan Sullivan was the responsibility of the school, the president of the Fighting Irish sent out in a statement. He was also sure to point out that coach Brian Kelly’s job is not in jeopardy over the tragedy. Gotta get the important things out of the way first.
- Utah’s attorney general met with the Justice Department to discuss possible legal actions against the BCS. You know, maybe they should spend more time supporting the team that just got trounced by TCU instead of trying to sue their way into a title game.
- Dan Beebe saved the Big 12 and gets a contract extension. Good job guy.
- Speaking of saving the Big 12, it looks ESPN is the station that stepped to save the conference. How do I know this? They are now talking with Texas to do a Longhorn television network.
- The court case between Ron Prince and Kansas State will now go to trial. We are in year 2 of a 10 year battle here folks.
- Kansas came back from 45-17 deficit against Colorado with 12 minutes to go in the game to win 52-45, the greatest comeback in their school’s history. Great job, Jayhawks. Rest assured Colorado fans, when athletic director comes out and says Dan Hawkins will be the coach through the end of the year, it means he’s going to get canned. It’s a complete Dallas Cowboys/Wade Wilson situation. Welp, not anymore, Dan Hawkins just got canned.
