In today’s college football, things can change dramatically week to week both on the field and off. One week, Missouri is leaving the Big 12 and will blow up the conference. The next, the Big 12 invites TCU to join to lock things up. TCU head honchos met to make it a done deal. They made the announcement Monday night. I can breathe a sigh of relief because for the first time, the Big 12 will actually grow and Missouri should stay put for the rest of the year. We’ll have to find out next week if something else that’s huge will go down. In the meantime, here’s this week’s Crib Sheet:
- Ohio State president E. Gordon Gee just keeps this hits coming. This time he said that Ohio State is the poster child for compliance in terms of student athletes and the NCAA. Ha, wow. he really doesn’t know what’s going on does he.
- Here’s a pretty good interview with Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds. He talks all things conference realignment and how Texas played a role. It seems that they care more about Oklahoma than they do Texas A&M.
- Since Missouri is looking at options, chancellor Brady Deaton stepped down as head of the Big 12 board of directors. Oklahoma State’s president Burns Hargis now takes over. He’s doing a great job so far, way better than Deaton.
- Speaking of Missouri, it seems that an official let loose that they really wanted the Big 10 to invite them and not the SEC. I’m not sure that’s gonna hold over too well with the boys from the south. Missouri’s great at shooting themselves in foot.
- Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert got bumped to number and now he’s taking his show on the road. The first real life play he had for the Longhorns was in the BCS National Championship Game. I think it kind of broke him. Maybe a change of location is just what he needs.
- It looks as though Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson’s Twitter account was hacked by his ex-girlfriend. Ruh roh, sounds like he’s not that smart off the field. I wonder that means when it relates to his on the field decisions?
- The SEC athletic directors met to draw up the scheduling logistics for Texas A&M. Apparently some of them were up in arms over how that would work out. Also, it seems that Missouri has the majority of votes in the SEC but not enough needed to get an invite. It just seems that the SEC will use Missouri to get somebody better. They will have to wait another week because they aren’t doing anything this week.
- Kansas linebacker Steven Johnson has a story not unlike that of Rudy Rudiger. He injured his knee in prep school and went to Kansas as a walk on because the Jayhawks were the only one still talking to him. He had no scholarship but fought his way onto the team. Good stuff there.
- The Big 12 was on a roll last week. The granting of Tier 1 and Tier 2 rights is not an official done deal. Plus no high school highlights or games or anything will be allowed for any Tier 3 television network. Things are coming together.
- The Big East are the big losers here and they got together to discuss their options. They might be going gone real fast here. I’m not sure they can expand to get quality teams and get to 12 total fast enough.
- Some schools in the Big 12 want to expand more and I’m thinking Kansas State president Kirk Schulz might be one of them. When he was interviewed about the TCU deal, he let loose a nugget about the quality of teams trumping the number of television sets. It seems that they are still looking and looking for quality only.
- Meanwhile, now that the ACC is up to 14, they are reopening negotiations with their television deal with ESPN. They are hoping to get a bigger chunk of change than what they have now.
- In some bad news for Missouri, The Big 10 is not looking to expand. I believe that the Big 10 and Pac 12 are sitting tight now to see if their newly expanded setup will work out for them first before grabbing other teams.
- Boston College didn’t want UConn to come along to the ACC. It seems they feel that the Northeast was their turf. Well that turf is terrible this year. Maybe they need to focus on playing better before becoming a great decider. The athletic director already apologized for implying that ESPN was involved in the Big East exodus to the ACC.
- Another mom to the rescue! This time it’s Tennessee’s coach Derek Dooley’s mom, Barbara. She went on the radio air to defend her son and his job for the Volunteers. Tennessee has won a BCS National Championship so I’m guessing that the patience wears thing real quick when they lose down there. At least Derek still has his mom.
- In classic rivalry fashion, Texas A&M’s buses were vandalized before their game at Texas Tech last weekend. A&M reported that is was spray paint and animal poop. Tech states that it was fish bait. It’s very classless but it’s also pretty funny. I’m thinking like Animal House or Van Wilder or something.
- A member of the chain gang at the Northwestern game last week had a heart attack during the game and had to be rushed to the hospital. What’s up with people on the field having major medical issues?
- Dan Beebe sets the record straight on some of the things that went on behind the scenes during the Big 12 fallout in the last couple of years. He puts the blame square on Nebraska for balking a revenue sharing and then bolting for the Big 10. He also takes credit for that equal revenue sharing going on today. Was he the fall guy? I don’t know, but changes are happening quicker now than before, whether it was his fault or not.
- Some folks in Baylor think they started the Homecoming tradition a good two years before Missouri, but the Tigers get the credit because Baylor didn’t repeat the event for another 6 years. What’s more interesting? That this it’s coming out before Missouri’s 100th Homecoming or that it’s coming out while Missouri is trying to go to the SEC?
- Western Kentucky head coach Willie Taggart doesn’t like Twitter too much now. He benched Antonio Andrews for a game for knocking some fans of the team on the social service. It’s all or nothing for head coaches and Twitter now.
- So while South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier punked out a sportswriter for writing some false claims about him, he also decided to drop Stephen Garcia from the team completely. South Carolina is still ranked right? Just imagine if things were more stable over there.
