So the deed is finally done. Texas A&M and the SEC made it official. Now last week, we found out that the Big 12 was staying together. We also found out that Dan Beebe resigned, at the request of Oklahoma and some others. Connected sports guy Chuck Neinas was setup as the interim Big 12 Commissioner. What else? The 1st and 2nd tier television rights are on the table. That’s fine for Texas because the LHN is 3rd tier, noinch! The athletic directors all met and were saying they are committed to keeping the Big 12 alive. Although, it seems Missouri’s foot is still out of the door. Worse yet, the reason Oklahoma wanted the Big 12 to stay alive was because they couldn’t swing a deal with the Pac 12. So is it safe? I guess it is for now. I’ll be certain of it when somebody actually joins the conference instead of leaves it. Until then, here’s another installment of the Crib Sheet:
- New Mexcio officially fired Mike Locksley. It didn’t take the bad performance on the field. It took a recruit getting a DWI using Locksley’s car. Sheesh how bad does New Mexico want to be mediocre?
- Apparently somebody has a problem with Kansas State’s phrase ‘EMAW.’ It was meant to be a rallying call but the ancient phrase has caused some who wish to be more politically correct to complain. The replacement? EPAW, or Every Person A Wildcat. I don’t know if it will stick as much but nice try going for the change.
- It’s good to know that Iowa State might have a home with the Mountain West Conference if the Big 12 blows up. Yeah, it’s a consolation prize, but it may be a prize won by alot of the former Big 12 North teams.
- It looks like West Virginia is trying to buy back some vulgar looking officially licensed t-shirts. The kind of language on the shirts make it seem like a knockoff but I didn’t know it was an official shirt. Doh!
- In case you were interested in how the Big East is handling realignment: Air Force is a target, Navy is a target and is interested, and East Carolina applied. Seriously East Carolina is applying everywhere. They are like the Missouri of the east.
- The New York Times college sports blog started publishing tailgating recipes and normally I don’t point it out but the Cheddar Bacon Ranch Pull is just too damn tasty looking to pass up. I need to make this guy in December.
- She is no Erin Andrews yet, but Jenn Brown is trying hard to catch up the ESPN queen goddess status. She took a step back last week when she called Cincinnati’s head coach Butch Davis, Bitch. It’s a small slip up that led to hilarity.
- Iowa State sold out their season tickets this year. Normally for college football, it’s no big deal, but for Iowa State it’s a moral victory for a team that is on the rise.
- Former Missouri running back Derrick Washington was found guilty of sexual assault last week. He’s been in some trouble and this ruling seems to be the culmination of it. Let’s hope he can pick up the pieces and starts anew.
- I complained about uniforms last week, but the hole in my rant has got to be camouflage. Texas Tech will be on tap next month wearing those bad boys for the Wounded Warrior Project. It’s like you can’t see them on the field!
- Toledo got jobbed last week against the Syracuse and now they are requesting that the game be overturned. The ref counted an extra point when the replay clearly showed that Syracuse missed it. The Orangemen went on to win in overtime. The MAC states there’s nothing they could do.
- Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill had another seizure. He’s in the hospital again. Yeah, now it’s time for that guy to quit.
- NCAA president Mark Emmert is walking around pointing the finger of shame at universities and their behavior over realignment. He has no power to really do anything, but he can still complain and chide like the rest of us.
- Conference USA and the Mountain West Conference are hedging their bets in case every other conference upgrades to super status. Just think, Super Mid-Cons! I’m excited!
- Now that SEC has their 13th lucky team in Texas A&M, it’s time for them to settle down. At least, that’s what commissioner Mike Slive says. He’s also thinking about lifting the 2 team restriction on conferences for the BCS. I don’t believe the first part and I sure as hell don’t believe the other one.
- While they are not busy picking up the Big 12 pieces, interim commissioner Chuck Neinas and Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds will advise a sports consulting firm launching a new venture to help colleges in all things athletics. I thought people had issues with the former guy Dan Beebe being all buddy buddy with Texas and Dodds.
- Just in case you were wondering, Mark Mangino is living in Florida and doing fine. He was the Kansas State game on the sidelines last weekend. He says he’ll be back to coaching. We’ll just wait until he gets hungry enough.
