Crib Sheet: FCS is Coming For Ya

It’s the year of FCS upsets so far.  The first week saw North Dakota State upsetting Kansas and Jacksonville State putting one on Ole Miss.  Then last weekend, James Madison beat ranked Virginia Tech.  It just goes to show you that the competition can be heated on any given Saturday.  If a team gets too big for itself, it may overlook another opponent.  That’s just enough to tilt the victory meter away from them.  We are always humble with our conference powerhouse that is the Crib Sheet, so check it out:

  • We’re heard of strange injuries before but having a ‘bowel injury’ takes the cakes.  That’s what Arkansas Razorback Dennis Johnson had that left him out of Saturday’s game against Georgia.  We hope he can plug it up for next week.
  • What two better teams to play in Jerry Jones’ Cowboys Stadium to kickoff the season than LSU and Oregon.  Huh?  That’s right, the ‘Cowboys Classic’ will be held by two teams not in the Big 12.  Doesn’t make sense at all.
  • We see reports of crime all the time in the Crib Sheet.  Like another arrest for Missouri’s Derrick WashingtonSports Illustrated’s Jeff Benedict points this out as well.  We think we’ll keep it on the down low from now on.  Maybe just police blotters for the Big 12.  Unless it’s some kind of harmless, whacky crime.
  • Oh by the way.  The lawsuit between former K-State coach Ron Prince and the university will be moving back to the courtroom.  It looks as though both sides want an immediate judgement.  Not sure if it’s gonna happen.  We’ll keep you posted.
  • All signs are pointing to Colorado joining the Pac 12 in 2012.  They wanted to move earlier, but the stars couldn’t align just right.  Maybe after the California whupping put on the Buffaloes pushed them back a year.
  • The plane carrying McNeese State had to make an emergency landing on the way to the Missouri game.  Apparently, a tire blew out on take off.  That would scare the heck out of me.  No wonder those kids didn’t fare to well against the Tigers.
  • The New York Times points out that the Big 1o makes its money because of the fans.  And the fans who would pay a massive premium to see the Big 10 games.  So the Times points out what we know already:  control the college sports in the conference and you can make some major bank.
  • It looks like Villanova is looking over an invitation to the Big East.  This would be an upgrade in the football program as they were FCS last year.  They are a part of the Big East in virtually every other sport.  We hope this helps keep the conference together for a little bit longer.
  • One of our favorite football people, former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach, will get his own radio show on Sirius.  He’s doing that and CBS.  Will he ever be back to the sidelines?  Maybe after these gigs pay off his lawyer fees for his suit against Texas Tech.
  • A bunch of Missouri football players formed a rap group.  The Kentucky Boulevard Boys look to take over the scene like they take over the football field.  Yeah, whatever.  Call me when they get a recording contract.  Oh, and try to focus on the playbook and not your lyric book for the next couple of weeks.  We know it’s a cakewalk schedule but you need to be getting better now, not in a month.
  • Michigan’s Denard Robinson is your Heisman leader after two weeks and it makes real sense.  He single-handedly carried the Wolverines past Notre Dame last Saturday.  If he gets his wheel injured, the whole season is over for Michigan.
  • Reggie Bush, on the other hand, will forfeit his Heisman.  It seems the pressure and guilt for playing with a bunch of ineligible players in 2005 was just too much.  Vince Young, the runner-up, tweeted that he will be happy leaving it vacant, even though he said he wanted it earlier this week.
  • Speaking of Twitter, Miami of Florida’s head coach Randy Shannon just banned it for his players.  It seems the beat down Oklahoma gave the Hurricanes was enough to warrant this punishment.  Maybe the team can play their way back into getting access?
  • The new NCAA President Mark Emmert wants to get tougher on the rule breakers.  Yet, he wants to make sure the pro sports leagues and players’ unions are happy.  Let’s face it.  The NCAA is irrelevant.  It seems all they do is choke the players from making money so they can make more money.  A free education is great for these athletes, but they are stopping adults from making adult business decisions.  Someone needs to stop these guys, they are like cassette tapes.
  • Who will win the kicking battle in Manhattan?  Will it be Athony Cantele or Josh Cherry? One thing is for sure, one of these two will lose a game for the Kansas State Wildcats.
  • And it looks like the WAC is suing Nevada and Fresno State so they can stay in the WAC for the 2011-2012 season.  You know, with the way expansion has been handled in the offseason, wouldn’t the WAC have some sort of contingency in place?  Instead of suing, why not invite a couple of Big Sky schools in?  Nope, because they are a sub par conference, they will sue their way around things.  This conference will die a slow burning death.

Crib Sheet: College Football Prime Time

Finally the wait is over.   Tomorrow night we kick off another great year of college football!  It’s been what seems likes ages since the end of last season and now we have another year of the most pristine competition we’ll ever see on the field.  Sure the offseason provided plenty of drama, with coaching changes and conference expansion, but we’re done with the talking and we’re ready to strap it on.  The helmet that is.  So here’s the last Crib Sheet before the new season:

Crib Sheet: Nobody Saw This Coming

Okay this close to the season and we still have major, er mid-major, moves regarding conference expansion.  So BYU started to teeter and now the WAC blew up.  Further out west there are questions of Pac 10 allegiance.  Please, will the powers that be put all of this on lockdown so we can focus on actually playing football instead of this crap.  The season is about 2 weeks away!  We’re not sure they’re listening so in the meantime, everyone else clue them into this week’s Crib Sheet:

Brooksider Brings Us the Best in Football and Bars

Ahh, nothing like a good ole familiar barspot to round out the year and watch some major championship games. This will be our third year in row heading to the Brooksider Bar & Grill and it’s well worth it. We’ll go over this year’s additions as well as revisit some of the amenities that make the Brooksider to place to be for sports watching. Most importantly however, we have the SEC and the Big 12 Championship game to buckle up and ride along with. So hold on and we’ll tell the tale of the year’s last barspot.

Broosider Inside

This time around the first thing we noticed was how open the joint was. We can’t remember if it happened last year or not, but the they knocked down some walls to make it more open and pleasing. We swear they added even more flat screen televisions since our last appearance. And, yes, we still love the 71 inch plasma television. They added wireless and we were rocking it for the post during the games. There’s nothing else new we really noticed. They still have plenty of space for smoking outside, dancing downstairs, and local bands up front.

Brooksider Downstairs

The Brooksider wasn’t without its faults, however. We understand that fans are needed to circulate air, especially in smoking joints, but it was little ridiculous in this kind of weather. Speaking of which, the front door kept opening up and letting in some wickedly cold air. For their next expansion they need a breeze way. Downstairs used to be the place where the dancing and partying took place, but it’s all gone now. Thank you dress code. To make up for it, they have special parties booked down there, but when we were there it was empty and smelled like sewage. Clean it up, guys.

Brooksider Waitress

The service started out really cool. The first shift waitresses looked pretty cute and they did do a good job of taking orders and accommodation our sitting needs. The 2nd shift waitresses met the standards the Brooksider set as they all matched the beauty we remembered from last time. Although it was a little troublesome when they didn’t know all of the bottles available for the special, they still hooked us up when we needed.

Brooksider Mac N Cheese WedgesBrooksider Bologna

The food always starts with Mac N Cheese Wedges at the Brooksider. We ended up washing it down with their game day special of 5 bucket beers at $15. Get the imports for that deal when you come. It was hard to overlook the $5.99 wing special but the wedges always warms our bellies well. For the second round of foodstuff, we filled our tummy with some fried bologna on toast. It was tasty, but it still doesn’t beat Harry’s Country Club.

We showed up early to knock out a good seat and we were glad we did. We spied the dramatic finish of the Big East title game with 2 touchdowns below 2 minutes to go in the game. It was a shootout all day but Cincinnati pulled out at the end to finish with an undefeated season. We were also fortunate to check out the finish of the Fresno State and Illinois game. A 2 point conversion off a touchdown happened after a deflection and a lineman catch. Already the day started out great.

Brooksider Inside 02

But we were really there to see Florida take on Alabama and Texas take on Nebraska. First up, Florida and Alabama locked horns in the in the SEC title game. It was all Alabama to begin with as Mark Ingrim ran all over the Gator D and Florida had a hard time answering. Florida finally put some points with a field goal around the end of the 1st quarter. Tim Tebow and company tried to keep up in the 2nd quarter, but couldn’t match Alabama’s running game. The Crimson Tide pulled away in the third and their stingy defense was just too much for Tebow to handle. The Gators were outmatched and the better team in Alabama won. Contrats to them.

Next up was the Big 12 title game with Texas and Nebraska. The first half opened up with a couple of costly turnovers for Colt McCoy and the Longhorns. Not to be outdone, Zac Lee lobbed a couple of ducks Texas’ way. It was field position that was the factor as Nebraska took advantage of the turnovers and went up on top 6-0. It took some whittling down, but Texas came back toward the end of the first half and scored on a McCoy draw to cap off a long drive. Not much action for the first half as it was Nebraska’s style of play all the way.

Brooksider Christams Tree

The second half continued in that tradition and it led to a shocker of a finish. We could talk about the third quarter, but the best part of the whole game ended at the end. After a kick return back into Texas’ territory, Nebraska finished again with a field goal to take the lead late. The kickoff wobbled out of bounds and Texas started with the ball and under a minute to go at their own 40.

After a horse collar tackle and a couple of plays, it was down to the last couple of seconds of play. Colt McCoy took the snap in the hopes of running down the clock. He floated the pass out of bounds with no time left on the clock. Or was there? After a review, the Longhorns did have one second. The kicker for Texas lined up and punched in a kick at the end of the game to beat Nebraska and put Texas in the BCS Championship game. Instant Classic.

The Brooksider Bar & Grill lived up to expectations, but they are starting to get a little shaky. Places like Johnny’s Tavern in the Power & Light district is coming up fast to match their stellar service. As for the BCS College Football Championship, we now have a clearer picture. Bowl Season is just upon us and we’re hoping that all of the games are exciting as the majority of the games over the weekend. Hopefully, our breath will be caught up in time just to lose it again.

Barspotting: A Little Birdie’s Pub Told Me To Go There

birdiespub

This week’s barspot brings a suburban locale.   Usually in suburbs around this time, you smell the freshly mown lawns and the first scents of fall.  You even hear the birds chirping.  In that spirit, we will watch the action at Birdie’s Pub.  Um let’s see here.   Another way to think of this place is that we are going to a golf players fantasy sports bar.  So while we see the golf season wind down, we can see the college football season pick up.  Okay, now we’re just blabbing on.  We really don’t know what’s in this place because we’ve never been there before.  Hopefully, the local crowd won’t chirp to much while watching the games.  We also hope that Birdie’s does better than par for the barspotting course.  Now bring on the beer cart babes.

When: Saturday, September 19 2009
Time: 1:00 pm ish
Where: Birdie’s Pub, 8889 W. 75th Street, Overland Park, KS 66204, 913.648.4011

Games:

Notes:  Alrighty some of the better games are happening tonight and tomorrow.  The Georgia Tech and Miami game should be good but we’re not sure if a fight will break out or not.  We know the Battle for the Milk Can can be rough and it’s up to Fresno State to spoil Boise States frothy pour toward BCS busting run.  The Governor’s Cup is up for grabs when Louisville heads to Kentucky.  Too bad both programs are a little blah right now.  Kansas will handle Duke better than the basketball contest.  The O-Rourke-McFadden Trophy (a leather helmet) is what Boston College and Clemson will be shooting for Saturday.  The Trophy first showed up just last year.  Missouri will roll.  Florida will take out its frustrations on Lane Kiffin’s smack talk against his Tennessee team.  In what will be the game of the week, we will see two great defenses pound on each other with Nebraska going to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech.  Due to a scheduling difference, Texas Tech agreed to play Texas this weekend.  For us it means an early treat and a revenge game for the Longhorns’ Colt McCoy.  UTEP and New Mexico State ride the Battle of I-10 to vie for the Silver Spade.  Finally we get Kansas State heading to UCLA.  So the starting QB is out with a broken jaw and 4 other players are suspended from UCLA for this game.  I still think this game has home victory written all over it.

Once again here are the facebook pool results:

Johnny’s Tavern has the Power and the Light

We were very skeptical when we strolled toward the Johnny’s Tavern setup on the corner of the Power & Light District in Downtown Kansas City.  We’ve been to a couple of places around there before and the experiences were weak.  We had some hope, however, as Johnny’s Tavern came through for us before.  After spending the afternoon there we can say it is the best bar in the district.  The food was great, the poker game was loads of fun, and the games on the screens were stellar.   If you own or work at a bar around that area, read on to see how to make it successful.
