Holiday Football at Skybox Left Us Wanting Seconds

Riding back in the car Sunday, while it shuffled through the snow sprinkling down in the Ozarks Sunday, I started going over just what kind of weekend I experienced.  It was food filled, family and friends filled, and just enough football filled.  We saw a true Border War this weekend and we were thankful for a great time.  But before I jump on the recovery treadmill, let’s do a flyby of Skybox.

Pick It and Stick It: Overloaded on Turkey, We’re Ready to Pick at it

Sitting in Ozark, Missouri and letharging about on this day after Thanksgiving, I can’t help but think how thankful we have to be for college football.  After the turkey’s we had yesterday NFL-wise (okay including the Texas rout of Texas A&M), we are treated to some actual competitive football.  I watched a pretty good back and forth matchup between Nebraska and Colorado, with Nebraksa winning 40-41.  There were also some close games earlier today and it looks like Boise State and Fresno State is starting out real tight.  Lane Kiffin has a new job to be thankful for, with the offer from Tennessee coming through.  And I guess KC has something to be greatful for too, as it looks like Arrowead will host the Border War through 2012.  All in all a pretty darn good day if I say so myself.  Here’s this weeks picks:

The Yeti is going out of town for the weekend and we’re hoping to make it out to see the Border War in Springfield, MO.  We here at the KCCGD wish you the warmest of holidays and we expect to knocked out completely after the three, yes count ’em, THREE turkey meals coming our way.  Hopefully, by Saturday we’ll be ready at Skybox to enjoy some traditional college football.  Until then, it’s a turkey bonanza!

Pick It Standings Week 13: Announcing Team A-Go-Go

So in yesterday’s hullabaloo, I briefly mentioned my thoughts on the marquee announce team of Kirk Herbstreit and Brent Musberger.  They aren’t the worst announce team, but they certainly are not the best.  Kirk I really don’t have much of a problem with as he finally turned the corner after dogging K-State for years.  But I still keep him on a leash.  Brent, on the other hand, is the Dick Vitale of college football.  And by that I mean he’s all fluff and no substance.  I guess if you’re mainstream like he is, you gotta be non confrontational, but it gets really annoying how much he cheers on the team that happens to be doing well at that period of time in the game.  Oh well, at least we’re sure he’ll get the team names right, unlike Keith Jackson (he called K-State the Kansas State Jayhawks the first year they beat Nebraksa in forever at Manhattan).  At any rate, here’s the pick standings:

It’s only a matter of time before the dwindling amount of games run through and Cabbottmtf can claim his title. Keeping with the trend for the last four weeks, Cabbottmtf rings in a big ole 7 spot.  Given that the picks this week were light, he actually came out on top.  Krizzou and the Purple Yeti at the turkey, 6 point style.  As we head into the holiday, we again ask for alms or at least some kind of thing the loser of the pick set can do at the big, end of the year blowout.  Post your comments below and please keep it PG-13.  Here’s this week’s BCS Standings:

Bill is Dead! Long Live Bill!

No later than I posted up this week’s Barspot review, did I come to discover that K-State made a choice on their next head coach.  And so, moving forward into future, the Kansas State Wildcats next coach is Bill Snyder.  Yes, that Coach Bill Snyder.  So the Wildcats and Jon Wefald go back to family and bring in the 69 year old wonder kid to go around the block again.  And that was the theme of the press conference this morning.  Family or in this case Family Squared.

The rumors popped up late last night when Jefery Martin of the Kansas City Star posted a quick news blurb about inside sources confirming Snyder’s acceptance.  Earlier this month we saw the fiasco of Ron Prince being fired and then another source dropping in Gary Patterson as replacement, only to backfire.  So this Purple Yeti was not so quick to jump to conclusions.  Listening in this morning on a local sports radio station, it took until up to 3 minutes before the conference to confirm that yes, Bill Snyder is K-State’s new coach.

Small Time Jaywalkers for Big Time Fun

Another week of football and there wasn’t much to choose from Top 25 wise.  At least rivalry week kept the competitive juices flowing.  And per the Yeti’s lady’s suggestion, we were letting the juices flow at Jaywalkers.  It was an all day affair with a college like air, and we took full advantage of all they had to offer.  What hoped to be a great day of football turned into a great day of hanging out at the bar.

Pick It and Stick It: Captain Obvious to the Rescue!

With the season coming to a close in the next month and the picks becoming sparse, it’s time for Captain Obvious to spring to action in the hopes of making such a light schedule this week entertaining.  Here’s what the ‘ole Cap just emailed today:

Yeti,

 Knowing your situation with college football, I decided to contact you with the thoughts on this week’s college football, obviously.  Here’s my obviously favorite way to communicate my points to you, bullet points:

  • Gary Pinkle is getting a contract extension.  With the Washington job open including other big time schools looking for coaches, Missouri ponies up and its payday for the Pinkle man.
  • BYU vs. Utah is NOT a Holy War.
  • Gary Patterson is still the coach at TCU.  He’s holding his cards but we all know K-State messed up the courtship.  Time to find another partner, Wildcat.
  • The Oklahoma Sooners are beating the Texas Tech Raiders.  Obviously.  59-2 at home under Stoops.  Obviously.
  • This week marks the official Basketball Focus Switch for Kansas University.  They’ve been waiting for weeks, obviously.
  • Ohio State will beat Michigan for the 5 time in a row and a new record loss total for the Wolverines.  It’s obvious that an 8 loss season going against an almost BCS team will be a total mismatch.
  • Cabbottmtf is the winner for Pick It and Stick It and the Purple Yeti is the loser.  He’s obviously rubbing it in for some time now.

I know deep with in my obviously huge heart that your readers will find this entertaining.  If you ever need assistance again, I will contact you.  Obviously because I know when you will need to me save the week.  Tally ho!

Jaywalker’s Sports Bar & Grill

Jaywalkers just happens to be a Kansas University bar.  No really.  So what better time of the year to hit up the place then when the Jayhawks have the week off?  As noted before, we love irony here at the KCCGD and we are game to keep in motion.  Their website says they are the best Big 12 sports bar in KC and we’re gonna put that to the test.  Who knows?  Maybe they will prove to be numero uno.  There’s one thing for sure, the Purple Yeti is eyeballin’ that big ole Sweet 16 burger.

Nesting up North for the Cold at Dirk’s

The first signs of winter hit early, as I strolled out of my apartment complex.  The slight snow drizzles gently floated in circles as I made my way for the cold north toward KCI and Dirk’s Bar & Grill.  The week of football was a quiet one, but the cozy den of Dirk’s kept things nice and warm.  It’s not the best barspot, but it was a welcomed distraction from the day’s weather and games.  Too bad it didn’t distract from Nebraska fans hanging out there.

Pick It and Stick It: Picking Our Way Through a Quiet Weekend

I have to admit, it’s feeling a little vacuous around KCCGD headquarters. All of the excitement from last week’s Ron Prince firing has died down to hearsay from family members. The next biggest game of the year courtesy of the Big 12 is next week. The biggest game this week comes from Lawrence and the Talk isn’t expecting much from the game. What’s left to do? Well in the lull times of football games you really are left up to the activities a bar has while you watch the mismatches play. Sometimes the games at a bar can be the saving grace to day of poor college football watching. Let’s hope that Dirk’s comes through as I’m bringing some extra quarters in preparation. We’re going to Dirk’s this week and I have to say I’m a little curious.  The Northland is vacant of bars I’m not too familiar with so this trip will make it the first charted barspot up north.  Krizzou tells me it was a blast when she would watch basketball games there.  She’s looking at a return visit and I’m looking to really for a return to style after last week’s barspot.  If anything we hope to see some good football and cheap beer.

Pick It Standings Week 11: Math is Getting Hard

Lesson time as we figure out not only our picks and the BCS, but also what kind of BCS math to expect in the Big 12 this year.  From what I’ve heard is that if the Big 12 South teams all end up tied then it would be head to head then BCS Standings.  I can be completely wrong with my math however.  Texas has the clearest sailing with Kansas and Texas A&M coming left.  Tech has the challange this week against Oklahoma, then they cool off against Baylor.  Oklahoma has the touhgest path with Tech this week and Oklahoma State next week.  I don’t know what’s gonna happen but I’ve been thinking about the scenrios for last coulple of days and my head is starting to hurt.  Don’t worry, though, as I won’t get kicked off the team or murder my neighbor.

Well lookie here, it seems that the Purple Yeti actually tied for first for the first time this year.  Is the turn around too late?  Who knows.  Props to both the Purple Yeti and Cabbottmtf for picking the spread against Missouri Saturday.  And Krizzou thought it was in hand.  It should be an easy ride to the finish line for both Cabbottmtf and the Purple Yeti.  So what’s the Yeti to do for the major bet this year?  Let us know.  Nothing much else to say except the Yeti was the only one to call the Iowa upset.  That brings us the BCS:

Cold and Stiffed from the Quaff Makes for a Chili Day

The barspot this week landed us at the Quaff downtown.  The movement going on at the Power & Light district had a casualty in Tanner’s next door, so we wanted to hit the more established places next seeing as we hit up the flashy sports bars in the P&L.  It was a bittery cold day Saturday,  but the lukewarm games and warm friendship of buddies that dropped by, including Cabbottmtf, kept the time toasty.  Unfortunately, the service was ice cold and the Quaff is on the clock.

Pick It and Stick It: Picks are Set, K-State’s Coach? Well….

This weeks picks are in, but apparently K-State can’t decide on who to pick as their head coach.  Reports flew about the net and radio today about Gary Patterson being hired as the next Wildcat coach.  Oh wait, whoops, nope, he’s not in.  Patterson even called a Dallas radio show and said so.  What happened?  GoPowercat.com either got the wrong source or the Athletic Department let a ‘secret’ out and goofed up big time.  So chances are Patterson is OUT for the coach this time around.  Maybe he’ll consider the position a couple of years down the road?  At any rate, it’s a bad day for K-State Sports Administration and its fellow blogs.  On to the picks:

Ron Prince FIRED and K-State Fans are Left Reeling

So, I’m minding my own business today hanging out at work, and an email from a co-worker stating that Ron Prince will resign. Welp needless to say I was shocked, but not by that much.  The events that transpired followed very awkward day, from going from resigning to firing to the weird as hell conference call, I’m still left wondering just what exactly is going on.  Did Ron Prince get a fair chance?  Did K-State fans get a fair evaluation?  Is Bob Krause for real?

So I blipped out over IM and Twitter about Ron Prince resigning and proceeded to knock out the rest of the tasks ahead of me.  I got done early, and puttered out of the work parking lot around 4:30 pm.  I was already shocked that the decision came so quick.  Even last Saturday I said the picket line was firing up.  So I punched like crazy to find a decent sports radio station to catch up on the news.  Both KC sports radio stations had the conference call live.
