Welcome to the first post of the offseason for the KCCGD Crew! We have a couple of ideas floating around and one of them bubbled up to reviewing the wacky tradition of mascots in college football. We’ll be talking about a new mascot every Monday in the offseason, pointing out likes and dislikes as well as funky things we found out about them. The inaugural post is, seeing as I’m a K-Stater, Willie the Wildcat.

Gators Chomp on Sooners and The PurpleYeti Chomps on Bar Food
Congratulations go out to the Florida Gators as your BCS Champion! I’m a little bummed out because this Yeti was going for Oklahoma Sooners. It could have been worse. The game could have been a complete blowout. At least the Sooners kept the game close until the last couple minutes of the game. Also, congratulations go out to Wharfrats for picking smartly and going against the Sooners for the Bowl Pick ‘Em title. It was a let down Thursday night, but JJ’s Other Place kept me warm.

Bill is Dead! Long Live Bill!
No later than I posted up this week’s Barspot review, did I come to discover that K-State made a choice on their next head coach. And so, moving forward into future, the Kansas State Wildcats next coach is Bill Snyder. Yes, that Coach Bill Snyder. So the Wildcats and Jon Wefald go back to family and bring in the 69 year old wonder kid to go around the block again. And that was the theme of the press conference this morning. Family or in this case Family Squared.
The rumors popped up late last night when Jefery Martin of the Kansas City Star posted a quick news blurb about inside sources confirming Snyder’s acceptance. Earlier this month we saw the fiasco of Ron Prince being fired and then another source dropping in Gary Patterson as replacement, only to backfire. So this Purple Yeti was not so quick to jump to conclusions. Listening in this morning on a local sports radio station, it took until up to 3 minutes before the conference to confirm that yes, Bill Snyder is K-State’s new coach.

Small Time Jaywalkers for Big Time Fun
Another week of football and there wasn’t much to choose from Top 25 wise. At least rivalry week kept the competitive juices flowing. And per the Yeti’s lady’s suggestion, we were letting the juices flow at Jaywalkers. It was an all day affair with a college like air, and we took full advantage of all they had to offer. What hoped to be a great day of football turned into a great day of hanging out at the bar.

Nesting up North for the Cold at Dirk’s
The first signs of winter hit early, as I strolled out of my apartment complex. The slight snow drizzles gently floated in circles as I made my way for the cold north toward KCI and Dirk’s Bar & Grill. The week of football was a quiet one, but the cozy den of Dirk’s kept things nice and warm. It’s not the best barspot, but it was a welcomed distraction from the day’s weather and games. Too bad it didn’t distract from Nebraska fans hanging out there.

Cold and Stiffed from the Quaff Makes for a Chili Day
The barspot this week landed us at the Quaff downtown. The movement going on at the Power & Light district had a casualty in Tanner’s next door, so we wanted to hit the more established places next seeing as we hit up the flashy sports bars in the P&L. It was a bittery cold day Saturday, but the lukewarm games and warm friendship of buddies that dropped by, including Cabbottmtf, kept the time toasty. Unfortunately, the service was ice cold and the Quaff is on the clock.

Pick It and Stick It: Picks are Set, K-State’s Coach? Well….
This weeks picks are in, but apparently K-State can’t decide on who to pick as their head coach. Reports flew about the net and radio today about Gary Patterson being hired as the next Wildcat coach. Oh wait, whoops, nope, he’s not in. Patterson even called a Dallas radio show and said so. What happened? GoPowercat.com either got the wrong source or the Athletic Department let a ‘secret’ out and goofed up big time. So chances are Patterson is OUT for the coach this time around. Maybe he’ll consider the position a couple of years down the road? At any rate, it’s a bad day for K-State Sports Administration and its fellow blogs. On to the picks:

Ron Prince FIRED and K-State Fans are Left Reeling
So, I’m minding my own business today hanging out at work, and an email from a co-worker stating that Ron Prince will resign. Welp needless to say I was shocked, but not by that much. The events that transpired followed very awkward day, from going from resigning to firing to the weird as hell conference call, I’m still left wondering just what exactly is going on. Did Ron Prince get a fair chance? Did K-State fans get a fair evaluation? Is Bob Krause for real?
So I blipped out over IM and Twitter about Ron Prince resigning and proceeded to knock out the rest of the tasks ahead of me. I got done early, and puttered out of the work parking lot around 4:30 pm. I was already shocked that the decision came so quick. Even last Saturday I said the picket line was firing up. So I punched like crazy to find a decent sports radio station to catch up on the news. Both KC sports radio stations had the conference call live.

Sunflower Showdown 08: From Fuzzy to Sharp to Fuzzy to OUT
As you may have noted above, it’s the first video recording from my trusted Sony Cybershot DSC-W120 and what better place to do it than the Sunflower Showdown. To correct myself, Kansas State played Kansas for the 106th time at Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas. The courtesy tent we started out in foreshadowed the day as we tailgated our way to another glorious set college football games. The fog from the morning lifted for the game, but our own fog soon returned. This was a road trip to remember, sorta.

Barspotting: Stadiumspotting Sunflower Showdown Style
Yes it’s road trip time for some of us here at KCCGD. Look for some tailgating wackiness and a healthy dose of live football video action this weekend as we hop on a bus and make way for Memorial Stadium. It’s Sunflower Showdown time as the Kansas State Wildcats travel to Lawrence to take on the Kansas Jayhawks. Both teams took a whooping last week and really lost in the same style: giving up the ball. We here at the KCCGD won’t turnover the coverage this weekend as we look to see some sweet pre-game action and pray that this week’s game is a little more than competitive. At any rate, it should be a blast and am sleeping just a little extra this week in preparation of a rockin’ good time.
When: Saturday, November 1st 2008
Where: University of Kansas Memorial Stadium – 1000 W 11th St Lawrence, KS 66045
Time: 9:30 AM – We hope to see you tailgating out there!

Flaming Fannies From Some Buffalo Wild Wings
This week’s barspot hits up a franchise with the wacky folks from Buffalo Wild Wings. Raytown was the place we went to form the various locations around the area, and after the nice drive through Swope Park it seemed the right choice. I was fired up for the games as there were homecomings for some North schools and a big national contest in the South as well as the Big 10. Buffalo Wild Wings also fired me up in other places Let’s hit the barspot.

Pick It and Stick It: No Really I’m Coming Back. REALLY.
Colt McCoy is coming back! Or at least, that’s what he says. At the same time, he’s telling us he looks like Tony Romo. I tend to disbelieve any talk about leaving early until the season is over for players. As frustrating as it is, that’s what happens in sports. Coaches, players, GM’s, everybody pretty much lies up front to divert any media jibba jabba. It’s a frustrating process indeed but we’re stuck with it until we evolve to read minds.
If Colt’s not ready, then he should stay another year, no matter what Scotty Borasch tells him. That’s not what others are saying however. Tim Griffin on the Big 12 ESPN blog tipped off a story that our own Jeffery Martin did about draft prospects in the Big 12 for next year. Martin talked to a draft scout and he listed Colt McCoy and Josh Freeman as potential first rounders if they declared. Now I can see Colt going after the Oklahoma and Missouri game, but I still think he should play another year. Josh, however, still looks raw and I’m not convinced he’s ready. We’ll find out first hand next week. But that’s for the barspot. Here’s the picks for the week:

My Mind’s Been Going Through Them Changes at Brooksider Bar and Grill
The Brooksider was already packed when I strolled in last Saturday, mostly with KU fans. The game was about to start and anxiousness was in the air. The barspotting crew at KCCGD knows this feeling all to well, as we made a stop here last year. This time around we were checking out the place to see what’s changed and whipping up some mojo for Krizzou’s Missouri Tigers. There were changes at the Brooksider, alright, and there were unexpected changes on the field.

Pick It and Stick It: Josh is Somehow Producing
Apparently, Josh was named the player of the week at USA Today. His performance was impressive last Saturday in beating Texas A&M 44-30 with 4 rushing touchdowns. Then Wednesday, the KC Star puts out an article showing that Josh in on pace to match Tim Tebow’s numbers from last year. I guess the love is pouring on strong for the Kansas City native. Heck even the Wildcats may be whispering bowls if they beat Colorado Saturday. I’m not really sold on Josh being a big time quaterback just yet, however. From the games I’ve watched, it looks as if he is still raw and if he were to leave after this year for the NFL, they would need to put him on an Aaron Rodgers like program before he can fully be realized. It’s great to see Josh getting some love, but knocking down some more and wins plus putting in another year is what Dr. Yeti has ordered. On to the picks:

Barspotting: Bringing it Back to Best Spot from Last Year at Brooksider’s (Alliteratively)
So we dialed in the mojo a couple of weeks ago by returning toKite’s (formerly Rusty’s) the K-State vs. Texas Tech game so we’re gonna dial up another mojo hit for the Mizzou vs Texas game at the Brooksider. It truly was the best spot last year so we’re looking to have a good time. Since we’ve been there however, there have been a few changes so we’ll check up on that and let y’all know how it goes. One thing’s for sure, Krizzou is gonna drink her anxiousness to blackout.
