Pick It and Stick It: Falling Down

Some teams are on their way up and some are falling down.  Things usually tend to even out right before conference play starts.  Most underrated teams start getting talk and the overrated teams get even more.  When conference play hits, you have to throw out the numbers because of rivalry and tradition.  That said, this week’s Pick It and Stick It takes a look at the teams from all points including the Big 12.  Let’s hope that everyone’s picks doesn’t fall down as well.

So let’s take a look at those falling down.  The big one from last week was Iowa.  They went to Arizona and lost.  Did you know that Iowa has not won a game west of the Central Time Zone since 1986?  Crazy stuff.  They should still be tough though.  They get to take out their aggressions against Ball State.

Virginia Tech is another team that fell down.  You don’t see them this week on picks.  That’s because they lost their first game against Boise State and another against FCS opponent James Madison.  Yeah, the Hokies lost to a President.  So Frank Beamer is way down and he may actually he on his way out after this year.  He’s had a long long run there in Blacksburg.

The weird falls are the ones for schools that win and still lose ground.  Texas is a great example.  They win all of their games but do not look that impressive.  Because of that they fall to 7.  Now, UCLA is coming to Austin and if they look real good they may climb back up.  Chances are, though, that any jump back into BCS fray will come from an undefeated conference season.  Yes, the Big 12 is tough.  Don’t listen to anyone else.

Pick It Standings Week 03: Another Round Down

So another week came through and we have the same story as last week.  Yup, the picks this week weren’t as good as the picks for the first week of Pick It and Stick It.  What does that mean?  It means that the 2nd lowest score drop takes effect next week.  All the standings are same except for JOOSE, who upped his points to a more respectable 370.  So the stage is set.  Movement will happen soon.  Check out the standings first:

Pick It and Stick It: A Fresh Crop of Picks

Here we go rolling into another week of Pick It and Stick It.  The games are fresh this week and we are stoked about the upcoming Farmageddon happening right in Kansas City’s backyard.  Kansas State is a 3.5 point favorite over Iowa State and we can imagine that Daniel Thomas is the reason for the line.  Will we see the same outcome as last year?  Hopefully it will be just as exciting.  So far, Farmageddon delivers on quality.  Here are the picks:

Barspotting: Farmageddon At The Other Place

It’s amazing to think how long we have been doing this blog.  Three years.  That’s dedication, homes.  One of the very first places we barspotted was The Other Place.  It was a great time and now it’s time again to head back over there.  What better place to watch Farmageddon other than Arrowhead than deep into one of the few Iowa/Iowa State bars in the area.  Yeah, we could go to Kite’s or Lucky Brewgrille for the Kansas State side of things but The Other Place is so much better and it’s been a long time since we’ve been there.  So let’s re-live some good times and meet us out there Saturday to watch Farmegeddon blow us away.

Barpsotting for Pick It and Stick It: Mashed Together Like Potatoes

Last week was the beginning of Rivalry Week and now we are fully realizing its end.  We had out schedule jacked up due to Thanksgiving and we’re sure you’ve had yours as well.  It’s all for a good thing, however, as we should give thanks to what we have at least once a year.  So in celebration of Thanksgiving and our shortened week, we are combining our Barspotting and Pick It and Stick It posts.  And without further ado, we are Barspotting at Chappell’s Saturday.  Yes, we’ll be just back in town to watch the Border War between Kansas and Missouri.  We’re going up to North Kansas City and watchin some football as well as checking out their collection of sports memorabilia.   Thankfully, we are just in time to go over the picks too and we hope you didn’t forget to make yours on this short week.

Rivalries are abound as just about every game on the list is a rivalry.  So in between the turkey and gravy and shopping and family, check out these games.  Some of them sound cool like the Duel in the Desert with Arizona and Arizona State.  Some of them sound goofy like the Egg Bowl with Ole Miss at Mississippi State.  No matter the name, they all mean something big to the teams and offer up a tradition only seen in college football.  Big 12 wise, we missed out on the Nebraska and Colorado game but that’s alright.  Nebraska won and it didn’t matter.  We have the Bedlam series for Oklahoma State and Oklahoma tomorrow.  The ‘Pokes will get a good shot at a BCS bid provided they win and Texas does next week against said Cornhuskers.  The other major game for the Big 12 is the Border War.  Kansas needs a win to be bowl eligible and Missouri needs a win to get 2nd in the North.  Who’s gonna win?  Come on out to Chappell’s and help us find out.

Pick It Standings Week 12: Gobble Gear Up

22_turkeyeating_3_lg

It’s a short week here as we’re are in training for Thanksgiving Thursday.  We thought about calling up Mark Mangino to help us train but we don’t like being verbally abused and we most certainly don’t want him to hog all of the food.  So here we are stretching and exercising for the marathon of food we get to sprint through.  A couple of things to note in setting your eat order is:  Do you use dark meat or white meat?   Are you a gravy fan?  Pumpkin or  Apple pie?  These answers can lead you to the top of the glutton mountain and be crowned the Feast King.  Now here’s the Pick It and Stick It standings:

Pick It and Stick It: Crusting Over With Joy

pickingnosecrustingwithjoy

We’re in a good mood this week.  Thanksgiving is coming up.  The bowl picture is settling up.  We even have a local team in the running for the Big 12 North title.  Even though we are inching closer to the end of the season, it already has met expectations for entertainment.  We have a little pep in our step.  We also have some games coming up tomorrow that should keep us hopping.  So whistle while you work and check out this week’s Pick It and Stick It:

Pick It and Stick It: Another Road to Flick On

flickitdontstickit

We’re packing again and heading out west again, but this time it’s a little farther.  A full tank of gas and some pajammy jams are all locked up and we will be hitting the road after work.  Road trips are a big deal to the KCCGD family and we’re happy to take another one for the weekend.  Make sure you have good tunes, some tasty drinks, and the right company for road trips.  Also, bring a camera because you’ll never know what you’ll see.  Hopefully, we’ll get to pick up a pecan log from Stuckey’s on the way.  Here’s the the pick set for the week:

It’s not Atlanta, but We’re Doing the Dirty Birdie’s

Some weeks, you don’t know what you’re going to run into when you pick a place you’ve never been to before.  So when we strolled up to Birdie’s Pub and Grill,  we weren’t expecting much.  They didn’t have a website and the only information we got about the place was on Google Maps.   Walking in, however, things turned completely different.  Yes, it was bigger, but for some aspects it wasn’t necessarily better.  The goal of the week was to watch some Nebraska vs Virginia Tech and head to a BBQ.  We accomplished the mission.  Here’s the report.

The Crib Sheet: Signing Day/Week Aftermath

Ouija board

It was a big week of news and the Crib Sheet is back this week to tell you what mattered.  It was Signing Day last week and the ouija board nearly broke from producing signatures sprinkled out across the whole nation.  There were some surprises, but most of what was expected came to be true.  We mixed in some political goobery and a little bit o’ smack talk to keep things fresh.  My guess is the next couple of weeks are going to be dry news wise, so let this be the spike before the long lull.  Here’s the crib:

  • Newly appointed Jesus of Tennessee Lane Kiffin is crying wolf over Urban Meyer trying to hit up one of his recruits.  Lane still got the guy, but maybe the rub off from Al Davis’ fragile shoulders are showing up in Volunteer-land.  It’s nice you got the recruit, Lane, but talking smack on Urban will produce some nasty results.  Just talk to Georgia.  Oh and he apologized.
  • Kansas State expectantly showed weakly recruitng wise.  Ron Prince poisoned the recruiting and Bill Snyder is going to have an uphill battle for the Wildcats.  It’s going to be a big time reboot in Manhattan
  • Kansas on the other hand, nabbed a couple of quarterbacks and some other high profile recruits to lead into their highest rated recruiting class ever.  Will it show up on the field?  Mangino’s shown that he can recruit well and make some talent pay off so look out of the Hawks in the next couple of years.
  • Missouri too, had a pretty good recruiting class.  They promised some tight end play to Sheldon Richardson but realy this kid is defensive tackle all the way.  At any rate, look for them to compete for the North and then choke at some point.
  • Nebraska signed about 21 kids to fill out the black shirts.  Look out for these guys.  With the walk on program back on and some key pick ups, Nebraska will be well on their way to almost going back to the Big 12 Championship game.
  • Conference wise, Texas and Oklahoma went 1 and 2, again.  Hey they do that every year so get used to it.  Colorado had a top 4 conference recruiting ranking last year and look at how they finished.  Sleep tight, Texas A&M.
  • Bryce Brown is hanging out and making everybody speculate the hell out of him.  Everybody else is down and signed but this guy just likes making everyone wait.  Also, the big rumor is he might turn pro in some other league.  Really, Bryce is a huge tease.
  • James Franklin, the Maryland offensive coordinator, was named last Thursday as the successor to Ralph Friedgen.  Overlooking the fact that Maryland has done crap the last couple of years, this pick makes sense.  If the school is satisfied with mediocrity then they should continue in it.
  • Mike Leech is culling his old lawyer skills and is still banging out a contract with Texas Tech.  So the Red Raiders are apparently pulling a Boston College and telling Leech he can’t talk or interview with other teams during his contract.  If they break off now, look for him to be somewhere else after this year.  Come Texas Tech, fumble this one away!
  • Okay, this is getting redonkulous.  Now all of Utah’s lawmakers are sending a resolution to PrezBama to blow away the BCS and give in to the power of playoffs.  Now with football players on hand!  Please somebody tell the whole state of Utah to get over it and focus on getting the Mountain West the automatic bid.  Going the political route won’t work.
  • Missouri pulled in LSU tight ends coach Josh Henson.  It looks as thought some SEC cred might be seeping into the Big 12.  Recruiting wise, this will help out the Tigers immensly.  Tim Griffin’s already saying they’re going after Bryce Brown too.
  • Dana Dimel is coming back to K-State.  So he did a great job for Mike Stoops and reviving some offense and it looks like he’ll be doing the same at K-State.  Let’s hope that it will be more than Ron Prince’s “Throw-everything-up-and-see-what-sticks” offense.
  • In sign of bi-partisanship, Rep. Joe Barton (R) from Texas is siding with PrezBama in setting up a college football playoff.  Does he really need the votes?  Plus, this guy’s an Aggie.  Shouldn’t he be working more toward making Texas A&M a real football team instead of playing up to the playoff people?
