Purple Yeti Roar 50: BCS Bust

bcs-logo-black_background

Yeah it was a bust of a game for the BCS National Championship.  Notre Dame proved it didn’t belong in any league and Alabama pushed the boot down harder on the neck of college football.  Don’t fret, there were some highlights in between the ho hum week of college bowls.  The highlights include Oregon, Kansas State, Fiesta Bowl, Chip Kelly, Bill Snyder, Collin Klein, Cotton Bowl, Arkansas, Nick Saban, Michigan, South Carolina, Javon Clowny, Outback Bowl, Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Johnny Football. Pick It And Stick It: It’s A Big One To Finger

This weekend sees the culmination of what looks to be another Cinderella season for my obvious homer cheered Kansas State Wildcats.  They head to Morgantown this weekend to take on the hobbling West Virginia Mountaineers.  This is make it or break time for both programs and Saturday’s game will determine who will stay on the national stage and who will steep back down into the conference championship race. Oh there’s some other games going on this weekend, but this is the big one for me and for most of the nation (Big 12 nation, okay?). Continue reading Pick It And Stick It: It’s A Big One To Finger

Kansas State Football Preview 2012: Always The Underdog

Another year of Kansas State football is upon us and there’s some weird mixed feelings going on.   Maybe not in Manhattan, but certainly down here in Austin and in this Purple Yeti’s abode.  You see, part of me wants to believe that Kansas State will improve upon its amazing record from last year, but another wants to believe in the negative hype the so called sports media jams down my throat.  Is everyone writing off Kansas State too easily, or will reality hit hard for the little Wildcats from the Little Apple? Continue reading Kansas State Football Preview 2012: Always The Underdog

Purple Yeti Roar 16: It’s Me, Really

Crib Sheet: A Change Is Gonna Come, Oh Yes It Is

Ah yes, the college football season is officially over.  Time to rest up a bit, kick back, and reflect on what was great and what was terrible for the 2011-2012 college football season.  Go ahead, I’ll still be here. ….(time passes)…. OKAY.  So now that we’ve all mused about gridiron, let’s get down to brass tacks.  There’s winds of change a blowing and they will twirl the leaves around this here blog.  What’s going to happen?  Tune in next week.  We still have some Crib Sheet action to go over so let’s go right ahead and knock it out:

Bowl Pick It and Stick It 2011: A Day Late But Not A Dollar Short

Yup, I waited another day because the BCS Championship game was the last one on the docket for the Stick It series and it didn’t make sense to hype it up any more than it has been.  Plus, I was recovering from drowning my sorrows brought upon me by Kansas State’s loss in the Cotton Bowl.  So let’s wrap up this year’s Bowl Pick It and Stick It in style:  by not talking about the title game.  More on that in a second but first let us go over the final standings:

Crib Sheet: The End Is Nigh

Yup, we have a handful of games to go for this bowl season.  It’s been a pretty great run so far.  The weekend saw some great finishes and exciting shootouts.  I’m going to miss college football much like everyone else out there after the last whistle blows.  Until that whistle tweets its last tweet, we got a few more Crib Sheets to pass around as well.  The news wasn’t too quiet as we get to see more coaching changes and draft declarations now.  So let’s get right down to it:

Bowl Pick It and Stick It 2011: A Happily Bloated New Year’s

It’s weird getting ready to sit down and watch college football on January 2nd versus watching it on New Year’s Day.  Usually, I would stumble over late to a friend’s house to kick off the new year by watching football, gloming myself with food, getting drunk, playing some board games, and being as lazy as humanly possible.  This year, it’s watching everything online, eating some food, and not making a singular play on a game of boards.  The good thing is that I can adjust.  Unfortunately, the adjustments don’t look so hot for my Bowl Pick It and Stick It Standings.  Let’s take a look:

Bowl Pick It and Stick It 2011: 6 and 8 Split

Yes, it’s bowl season and I’ve got a hankering for one more Bowl Pick It and Stick It.  This time bowling is more exciting for me outside of the BCS Bowls.  Part of it is the fact that Kansas State got jipped out of an appearance at the Sugar Bowl, but the other part is that the line up BCS wise is just not interesting enough.  The Sugar and the Orange are lame.  The BCS National Championship Game is a rematch of boredom.  The Fiesta and Rose look good but the overall product leaves me underwhelmed.  That’s what I’m stoked for the Cotton Bowl.  It’s non BCS and has a top 10 BCS match up with Kansas State taking on Arkansas.  SEC vs Big 12.  Hell yeah.  Click on through for the Bowl Pick It and Stick It information.

Remember it’s a straight up pick but you can rank your confidence from 1 to 35.  What other bowls are interesting you ask?  Well, let’s start with the Big 12.  Baylor and Washington look good for the Alamo Bowl, thanks to Robert Griffin III’s Hesiman win.  Oklahoma playing Iowa for the first time in forever in the Insight Bowl sees Sooner head coach Bob Stoops head to his alma mater.  What other games look good?  How about the Outback Bowl with Georgia taking on Michigan State, another version of the BCS snub bowl.  That’s about it for me.  The others are decent but they just don’t jump out to me.  Come back every Monday from here on out, though and we’ll go over the picks.

Crib Sheet: The Chips Have Fallen Into the Bowls

The teams have been announced that cards played out on the table.  The big hand is lame this year but the side bets are sexier.  That’s right the regular season is over and now we are flipping over to bowl season.  There were some snubs as usual, but the Big 12 lineup of bowls still looks pretty strong.  The Cotton Bowl is right up there with the BCS bowls in terms of interesting match ups.  Kansas State vs Arkansas, or Big 12 vs SEC, like it should be.  Call your bets and flop on over to this week’s Crib Sheet.

Barspotting: Little Woodrow’s

It’s the final week of Barspotting for the 2011 year!  Yeah, I could go to some bowl games, but the way the BCS National Championship Game is turning out, I may just skip the whole shebang.  But who knows, I may be doing a little Bowlspotting with the Kansas State Wildcats if they find their way down here in Texas again.  In the meantime, Little Woodrow’s is on the list.  I’m not doing the 6th Street variety, but the one out in south Austin.  I’m ending the year the way I started it:  Doing a family friendly sports bar and playing some backyard games.  It should be fantastic.

Stadiumspottings Works In Austin’s DKR Stadium, Too

Oh to be the Kansas State fan I was last weekend.  I had friends in town, good times down on 6th street, and a Wildcat style game that I bore witness to at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.  The tailgating experience was a unique one as most of the tents sprinkled up and down the streets near the capital building.  The fans were mostly welcoming and I enjoyed the cordiality and and concert of celebrating college football.  Most importantly, however, I enjoyed the victory Kansas State had over the Texas Longhorns.  Is a Cotton Bowl at play?

Crib Sheet: Spring Fever Pitch

Spring is in the air and unfortunately, some of it stinks.  Now I could be talking about the Fiesta Bowl scandal or perhaps the NFL lockout.  Nope, it’s none of that.  It’s the fact that I have to suffer through another summer of baseball before the real American pasttime takes the stage.  Fortunately for me I have the Crib Sheet to keep my occupied.  Oh and thank you Beano Cook for being awesome.

  • Now that the Fiesta Bowl report came out and the bowl’s CEO John Junker got canned, people are speculating about the BCS and its ties with the Fiesta Bowl, including David Ubben.  It seems that the Cotton Bowl and its home, the Jerry Jones Cowboys Stadium spectacular, would be a great fit for the BCS.  It is the largest football stage out there.  If the BCS moves forward with Cotton, then this report and subsequent firing will also seem a little to coincidental.  The real loser here is the cancelled spring retreat for the Fiesta Bowl.  Well, that and the FEC complaint against the Fiesta Bowl filed by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.  It’s nothing a meeting with the NCAA can’t fix.
  • A former Texas A&M coach said that Willie Lyes, the same guy who was paid $25,000 from Oregon and is under NCAA investiagion, approached him and stated that he had beat $80,000 for a star recruit.  With all of this money blowing up and flowing around college football, it was onlya a matter of time that recruitment services looking to get a cut of the pic made moves like these.
  • Former Kansas assistant athletic director Rodney Jones gets 4 years in jail for the $2 million dollar ticket scandal involving him and some other cohorts, including Kassie Liebsch who got 3 years.  I’m pretty sure he’s going to get the fluffly white color crime prison and not the dark, stank, blue collar crime prison.  Still, he was all Niagara Falls during the sentencing.  Yet, ticket scalpding still goes on.
  • The Pac 10 is open for business and they’re letting the world know it.  The exclusive negotiating rights for Fox expired and now it’s time to shop the conference across all of the television networks.  Oh, they’ll get bank.  It’s the big time now.
  • ESPN filed suit against Conference USA for dipping into the FX deal for prime time football games.  It’s always cute when television stations and football conferences fight.
  • Soslan Gagloev was a Russian in Japan’s waters and kicking it sumo style.  And he was winning.  But he was busted for weed and now he’s playing some college football at Webber International Univeristy.  Defensive back he ain’t.  That said, sumo and any other kind of wrestling requires leverage work and that applies fantastically to line work in football.  He should do alright.
  • Here’s a shocker:  drug policies across all facets of college sports completely varies in policy.  I think the AP suggests to streamline the whole process.
  • Colt McCoy’s younger brother, Case, is looking to take the reigns for the Texas Longhorns.  He had a stellar spring practice.  Who knows?  Maybe that magic can happen again.
  • Speaking of Texas, their new network will be called the ‘Longhorn Network.’ There’s no deal for satellite deistributors but I’m guessing that it will blow up once they annoucne a couple of football games on the network.
