It’s the first road trip of the year for KCCGD crew and we’re getting ready today for the fantastic Oklahoma and Kansas match up in Lawrence. Typically people leave first thing in the morning and head back after the game. It’s nice for us because the game is at 2:30, but even the 11:00 am games require the big morning road trip. Usually that means packing up the night before and going over the football watching checklist. Food, booze, drinks, gear, and radios all need to be packed up and ready to rock. So tonight we’ll be busy making sure we are fully represented for the tailgating and the game. On top of going over this week’s pick set:

Barspotting: Stadiumspotting Returns to Lawrence
But not for the Sunflower Showdown. My beautiful and football lovin’ girlfriend is letting the Purple Yeti hitch a ride with her and her bid-ness down to Memorial Stadium for the big Oklahoma vs Kansas game. Both teams roll into the game suffering a loss to Texas and Colorado respectively so one of them will bounce back. Which one will it be? We’re not sure. How many of us will be sober? Well, we know the answer to that one. At any rate, we’ll report on every debaucherous action, on and off the field.

Crib Sheet: Hitting the Half Way Mark
This week marks the middle of the college football season. What have we learned so far? The top teams are still at the top. Texas and Florida hold destiny in their hands. Florida might have a rougher road but the coarse has been set for the predicted title match up. The rest of pack? Not so much. Especially in the Big 12. Oklahoma fell off the map big time, with Sam Bradford getting knocked out early with a shoulder injury. Kansas State is first in the Big 12 North, which punctuates the mediocrity thriving up there. The BCS busters are hanging around, except for the teams from Utah thankfully. The KCCGD crew is batting over .500 for hitting up good sports bars. Let’s hope the last half of the season is as exciting as the first half. Here’s the crib sheet :
- Former Penn State running back Austin Scott filed suit against all of the people involved in the rape charge against him that was eventually dropped a couple of years. There was not enough evidence to bring to jury. Scoot claims that everyone involved injured his career and is seeking damages. Rape is a serious charge and if someone gets wrongly accused and is ousted because of that, then the people involved should get punished.
- Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount is on the campaign trail to revive his status with the team, this time talking in front of teens with other current players. It’s going to be a long road back but the more work he does, the better chance he will have at getting back on the field. Let’s hope he makes it.
- Dennis Dodd for CBS clearly points out the writing on the wall of Oklahoma Sooners fans, Sam Bradford’s college career is over. After going down again against Texas, we doubt he’s gonna come back and try to re injure the shoulder or something else. Landry Jones will be your guy from now on.
- On the BCS front, we have a new political action committee started to fight the BCS. Yup it’s the Playoff PAC! A bunch of Belt Way people will get together and try to elect Congressmen to vote on playoffs for the BCS. Never mind that the guy running it just happens to be a Utah alumnus. Seriously, people from Utah suck.
- Maryland and South Carolina will wear camo uniforms for their game November 14th for Veterens Day. Sweet! Now if Army could only buy a clue and bring back the sweet camo garb they sported last year. Bring it back!
- Jasper Howard, a Connecticut cornerback, was fatally stabbed after their homecoming game Saturday as well as another player. Head coach Randy Edsell claims that there wasn’t any fighting but some ‘verbal jostling’ that started it. So far there are two arrests made but they may not be connected directly to the stabbing. Our thoughts go out to the Uconn players and Jasper Howard’s family.
Pick It Standings Week 7: The BCS Baby is Born
Whoah nelly what a smelly game the Red River Rivalry was. The bigger upset for the Big 12 was Colorado over Kansas over the weekend. Either that or Kansas State’s 62 point thumping of Texas A&M. At any rate, guess what? Those Wildcats happen to be first in the Big 12 North. Coming into the beginning of the year, no one expected Kansas State to be in that position or Oklahoma to have 3 losses hung on them by this time. Just goes to show that in college football, anything can happen. More importantly this week, we have an expected birth of the first BCS standings. First, here’s the pick it standings:

GameDay: Bang! Bang!
So when listening to the hype leading up to this week’s Red River Rivalry, I couldn’t help but think that it used to be called something else. There’s whispers of it on the web now, but I could swear that it used to be called the Red River Shootout. Is that right? Pictures and images tell us of this but more and more it’s a rivalry and not a shootout. Did they change it? Why? Well we know why, and it kinda sucks.
Pick It and Stick It: Double Barrellin’ It
Ridin’, ropin’, buckin’, bustin’, and pickn’! Get used to it folks. The closer and closer we get to the Red River Rivalry the more we don the chaps and start spittin’ some chaw. Soze what wez got here is one of the best rivalries in the land. It may not be number one with a bullet but it certainly will place at the state fair. And in this here game’s place, that would be the Texas State Fair. So hold on to yer hats, buckaroo, there’s gonna be a shoot out come high noon tomorrow!

Arlight, enough cowboy poetry. Let’s get to the plate of beans for the weekend. Usually the Red River Rivalry is a close one and the spread makers deems it so this year with a measly 3 points. The rest of the Big 12 action may be in the shadow but there’s still some potential barn burners. Take a looksie at Missouri and Oklahoma State. Or even Kansas and Colorado. But enough about that. The other big rivalry is USC and Notre Dame. This should put whoever wins back on the map to the BCS title. A map that’s currently shared by Virginia Tech. They will have a hard time holding onto it when they face Georgia Tech. Pick well, peeps, and enjoy the games!
Barspotting: Check Out These Hooter’s
It was bound to happen. It could only be so long before we found out way there. And so, thanks to your voting, we will be barspotting for KC College Gameday at Hooter’s. If you don’t know what it is, then you probably never will be there. Essentially it’s vehicle for putting women in tight clothes and making them overly friendly. Word around the street, though, is their wings and cheese fries are top notch. Being the guy magnet it makes no apologies to be, they also have sports packages available. So we’re gonna find out this week if Hooter’s is a great place to watch sports as well as the talent.
Crib Sheet: Out of Prime Time
Okay it’s Crib Sheet time and we need to talk to all of the aspiring wide receivers out there. Do not talk to Deion Sanders. The image above presents only a shrivel of evidence to support our position. Yes, he’s flashy. Yes, he preaches. Yes, he looks good in a suit. But nothing really good comes from working with the guy. Just ask Michael Crabtree. So consider this a public service announcement and please avoid Deion Sanders. Here’s this week’s Crib Sheet:
- The NCAA ruled Oklahoma State’s Dez Bryant ineligible for maybe the rest of the season for failure to disclose recent dealing with a former NFL player, Dei0n Sanders. Doh! We thought the prima donna wide receivers came from Texas Tech. We’re thinking after some personal consultation with Tony Dungy or something Dez will be let back on the field to play again. While Dez is doing that, Deion denies tampering, Mike Gundy and Oklahoma State supports him (needs him back in the lineup), and Dez will meet with the NCAA after his written apology.
- Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw has been ordered to take an anger management course. This stems from a domestic fight with his girl friend some time ago. She has to take the course too. Will it affect his play on the field? Tune in to find out.
- ESPN’s Tim Griffin writes that Texas is getting ready for the Red River Rivalry this weekend by listening to that god awful Boomer Sooner theme song over and over. That’s either going to help them tune it out or get them so angry and sick that they will take it out on Oklahoma this weekend. This could work wonders elsewhere. Possible water boarding replacement? We think so.
- A walk on Southern Miss player Peter Wilkes committed suicide over the weekend. We send our condolences out to his family. Apparently his dad suffered a heart attack and died over the summer. Wilkes decided to continue school for his dad but apparently it was too much.
- A female student was arrested during the Iowa and Arkansas State game for continuously yelling at player Adrian Clayborn. The student was warned multiple times and even given a restraining order. Stalking happens at both sides of the gender. Kinda funny that heckling could get somebody arrested, though.
- Dan Hawkins finally benched his son, Cody. Or did he? This will be the downfall to Hawkins and will serve as a lesson to all coaches out there. Don’t let your family mix with your coaching. Bill Snyder 2.0 knew this and retired to spend time with his family. He’s back now and you don’t see any of his kids on the field, coaching or playing.
- While we have another punch during the game in the form of Idaho linebacker Tre’Shawn Robinson and subsequent reprimanding, we also see a 1 game suspension to New Mexico head coach Mike Locksley for doing it off the field with an assistant coach. Football is a violent sport but save the punching for MMA.
- The Big 12 will play seven bowls games during the bowl season after this year. More importantly the toilet, er, Independence Bowl is off the docket. We also see the new New York City Bowl show up. Many a mediocre conference team fans rejoice in the pick of New York over Shreveport, Louisiana.
- Speaking of the bowls, the Cotton Bowl will move to Jerry Jones mecca that is Cowboys Stadium and the old place will have a new one called the Dallas Football Classic. It’s nice to see they are still using it but does that put the number of bowls in Texas at about 234? Hey, the more the merrier.
Pick It Standings Week 06: Bored with Florida
The weekend of football left us a little deflated. There was much hype going into the Florida vs LSU game but it ended up being pretty boring. The other games on the docket were pretty uneventful. It’s saying something when the most exciting game of the week came from the Big 10 of all places. The pick it standings this week reflect that. There were lots of easy calls and people missed most of the same picks. Ho hum. The next week should spice up at bit, especially with the Red River Rivalry coming our way.

You may notice the results are a little slim. Well we don’t include the picks where everyone else chose the same. So for instance, this week everyone picked Virginia Tech, Penn State, Oregon, Alabama, Miami, and BYU. They missed South Carolina, Oklahoma State, and TCU. With that out of the way we once again point out Krizzou being the lone rebel and going with Baylor against Oklahoma. Good call by Mangino is Fat!!! for picking Arkansas.

We’re almost at the middle of the season and the pack is starting to break away. Minus any major upsets, it looks as though it will be a three person race between KSU finally makes a bowl again, Katpak, and Mangino is FAT!!! There’s a battle brewing for the cellar, too, between the Purple Yeti and Daniel Thomas is the man! But there’s still plenty of season left over and now that many of the Top 25 teams won’t have that many weekends off, the points should bump up. Get ready, because the BCS standings are coming out next week.
Nick and Jake’s is Half that Great
It was a different day Saturday afternoon. The cold spilled in over the midwest, the clouds filled the sky, and we were actually making the set of night games for the barspot. We huddled ourselves in the late afternoon/evening around the big bar in the sports bar section of Nick and Jake’s. Sports bar section you say? Yup, that’s different too. Nick and Jake’s really isn’t a sports bar. But yet, it is. Bar or not, the games on the television screens kept us nice and cozy.
GameDay: SEC is the Big Brother of College Football
Now this is a Big 12 and Kansas City blog but today we are going to dip into the hype and look at the SEC. Everyone in the country says the Southeastern Conference is the best college football conference on the planet. Many people, especially around here pooh-pooh that notion. But when looking at the numbers and opening conference play this week, it’s kind of hard to argue against that. The SEC has 4 undefeated teams. Every other conference has at most 2 (including the Big 12 and the Big 10). Now you might complain that the non conference schedule for the SEC has been weak, but they handled teams like Virginia Tech and the some what surprising Washington. Even so, they didn’t trip up like the other conferences and beat the teams they are supposed to. Yet they still get the ire of others. That kinda reminds me about how little brothers look at big brothers.

Pick It and Stick It: Don’t Choke On It
We were unfortunate last night not to witness the Nebraska and Missouri game. Though the radio was on, we couldn’t get a good grasp of just how muddy and mucky it was to play. 2-0 at halftime is a wacky score. But we didn’t expect Missouri to choke away the game and 27 points in the fourth quarter. What did we find out? Nebraska has the fast track to the Big 12 North title. Missouri is much like their new quarterback Blaine Gabbert: young, inexperienced, talented, but not yet ready. The Tigers did reload this year, but the bullet jammed up a bit last night. Let’s jam on to this week’s Pick It and Stick It:
Barspotting: Staying Late at Nick and Jake’s
It’s the opening weekend of Conference play and we will be heading to good ‘ole Overland Park to take in some games at Nick and Jake’s. Their dealio is they have one owner who like restaurants and one who likes sports bars. Obviously we will be spending most of the time in the bar spot (pun intended). Will this split decision location play to their benefit? We’ll find out this weekend. There are some BIG games going on Saturday night so plan on us getting there a little later in the afternoon. Hope to see y’all there.

Crib Sheet: Dancin’ in the Cleats
What’s wrong with a little celebration? We here at the KCCGD like to shimmy and shake here after an especially tasty nacho dip or greasebuger. So why is it so hard to let the college football players jump up and down? Granted we don’t zebra striped dudes follow us to the Golden Tee table and inspect our reaction to making a great save putt. But that’s where the problem is. The referees are subjectively deciding whether or not the celebration might be offensive to him or the other team. That seems just a bit too wacky. There’s already enough pressure on the refs for actual blown calls. Don’t let them blow it on stupid rules.
- Looks like there’s a chance that LeGarrette Blount may be reinstated sometime this year. He cold cocked a Boise State player during one of the first games of the year and was subsequently suspended for the rest of the season. Similar infractions in different conferences only yielded a game or two suspension. It looks like he’s taking the right steps to get back on the field.
- Kansas University police will open up an investigation to the fight that took place between the football and basketball players. The media hype around this is now big enough for some posturing by the law enforcement there. So a hand will be slapped and money will be given under the table to keep this guys on the field.
- Texas Tech’s Taylor Potts suffered a concussion last week and he may be out this Saturday for their game against the Kansas State Wildcats. The stars may be aligned for the Wildcats as they are coming off their last second win against Iowa State and Farmageddon. Good thing suspended offensive lineman Brandon Carter is back. Hmm maybe that’s why Potts got banged up?
- It looks like they nabbed the guy accused of filming ESPN’s Erin Andrews nude. They dude’s an insurance salesmen and pretty well off. Go figure. The most surprise part of the article is that there are eight videos. We thought there was just one.
- ESPN’s Chris Low has an interesting piece about how Gene Chizik left football desolation at Iowa State for big powerhouse Auburn. Guess what? Chizik’s got the Tigers undefeated and #17 in the country, proving yet once again that bringing in talent helps more than just coaching up your kids.
- Oklahoma Sooners’ Ryan Broyles is out four to six weeks with a broken shoulder. Broyles is their leading wide receiver. Oklahoma’s BCS chances are pretty much shot and least injuries will be a sufficient excuse.
- The SEC admitted they blew the excessive celebration call against Georgia when they took the lead over LSU with about 1:05 to go in the game. LSU came back and won. Now Georgia should’ve stopped LSU, but their chances were seriously hurt with the penalty. What’s up with refs deciding outcomes for more important teams? Indiana’s screwjob at Michigan and now this? It’s like the refs want the bigger names to win for the conference. If Georgia won the game, would we see this much hype for LSU and Florida this weekend? You know stuff like this makes me think twice about how clean these conferences really are.
- Speaking of this week’s Florida vs LSU matchup, it seems the Gator players are getting threatening texts from LSU fans. Ho boy, let the hype machine crank up to full power. JK LOL!
Pick It Standings Week 05: Feeling Overhyped
The non conference schedule is over and the Big 12 is limping out. Oklahoma losing another close on to Miami capped off a 34-14 non conference schedule with one more game remaining. The Arkansas rout of Texas A&M Saturday especially stung because it was from a SEC team. So it looks as though that the Big 12 won’t end up being the 2nd strongest conference. That can hurt Texas if they notch a loss and there’s no undefeated team in the conference. Heaven forbid USC or even Ohio State sneaks into the national title game again. One thing is for sure, the SEC is living up to the hype this year. Now it’s time to figure out if we lived up to our Pick It hype:
