Crib Sheet: Hitting the Half Way Mark

half-way-mark-on-rarotonga

This week marks the middle of the college football season.  What have we learned so far?  The top teams are still at the top.  Texas and Florida hold destiny in their hands.  Florida might have a rougher road but the coarse has been set for the predicted title match up.  The rest of pack?  Not so much.  Especially in the Big 12.  Oklahoma fell off the map big time, with Sam Bradford getting knocked out early with a shoulder injury.  Kansas State is first in the Big 12 North, which punctuates the mediocrity thriving up there.  The BCS busters are hanging around, except for the teams from Utah thankfully.  The KCCGD crew is batting over .500 for hitting up good sports bars.  Let’s hope the last half of the season is as exciting as the first half.  Here’s the crib sheet :

  • Former Penn State running back Austin Scott filed suit against all of the people involved in the rape charge against him that was eventually dropped a couple of years.  There was not enough evidence to bring to jury.  Scoot claims that everyone involved injured his career and is seeking damages.  Rape is a serious charge and if someone gets wrongly accused and is ousted because of that, then the people involved should get punished.
  • Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount is on the campaign trail to revive his status with the team, this time talking in front of teens with other current players.  It’s going to be a long road back but the more work he does, the better chance he will have at getting back on the field.  Let’s hope he makes it.
  • Dennis Dodd for CBS clearly points out the writing on the wall of Oklahoma Sooners fans, Sam Bradford’s college career is over.  After going down again against Texas, we doubt he’s gonna come back and try to re injure the shoulder or something else.  Landry Jones will be your guy from now on.
  • On the BCS front, we have a new political action committee started to fight the BCS.   Yup it’s the Playoff PAC!  A bunch of Belt Way people will get together and try to elect Congressmen to vote on playoffs for the BCS.  Never mind that the guy running it just happens to be a Utah alumnus.  Seriously, people from Utah suck.
  • Maryland and South Carolina will wear camo uniforms for their game November 14th for Veterens Day.  Sweet!  Now if Army could only buy a clue and bring back the sweet camo garb they sported last year.  Bring it back!
  • Jasper Howard,  a Connecticut cornerback, was fatally stabbed after their homecoming game Saturday as well as another player.  Head coach Randy Edsell claims that there wasn’t any fighting but some ‘verbal jostling’ that started it.  So far there are two arrests made but they may not be connected directly to the stabbing.  Our thoughts go out to the Uconn players and Jasper Howard’s family.

Pick It Standings Week 7: The BCS Baby is Born

bcsbaby

Whoah nelly what a smelly game the Red River Rivalry was. The bigger upset for the Big 12 was Colorado over Kansas over the weekend. Either that or Kansas State’s 62 point thumping of Texas A&M. At any rate, guess what? Those Wildcats happen to be first in the Big 12 North. Coming into the beginning of the year, no one expected Kansas State to be in that position or Oklahoma to have 3 losses hung on them by this time. Just goes to show that in college football, anything can happen.  More importantly this week, we have an expected birth of the first BCS standings.  First, here’s the pick it standings:

GameDay: Bang! Bang!

redrivershootout

So when listening to the hype leading up to this week’s Red River Rivalry, I couldn’t help but think that it used to be called something else.  There’s whispers of it on the web now, but I could swear that it used to be called the Red River Shootout.  Is that right?  Pictures and images tell us of this but more and more it’s a rivalry and not a shootout.  Did they change it?  Why?  Well we know why, and it kinda sucks.

Pick It and Stick It: Double Barrellin’ It

nosepickingg

Ridin’, ropin’, buckin’, bustin’, and pickn’!  Get used to it folks.  The closer and closer we get to the Red River Rivalry the more we don the chaps and start spittin’ some chaw.  Soze what wez got here is one of the best rivalries in the land.  It may not be number one with a bullet but it certainly will place at the state fair.  And in this here game’s place, that would be the Texas State Fair.  So hold on to yer hats, buckaroo, there’s gonna be a shoot out come high noon tomorrow!

Arlight, enough cowboy poetry.  Let’s get to the plate of beans for the weekend.  Usually the Red River Rivalry is a close one and the spread makers deems it so this year with a measly 3 points.  The rest of the Big 12 action may be in the shadow but there’s still some potential barn burners.  Take a looksie at Missouri and Oklahoma State.  Or even Kansas and Colorado.  But enough about that.  The other big rivalry is USC and Notre Dame.  This should put whoever wins back on the map to the BCS title.   A map that’s currently shared by Virginia Tech.  They will have a hard time holding onto it when they face Georgia Tech.  Pick well, peeps, and enjoy the games!

Barspotting: Check Out These Hooter’s

hooters

It was bound to happen.  It could only be so long before we found out way there.  And so, thanks to your voting, we will be barspotting for KC College Gameday at Hooter’s.  If you don’t know what it is, then you probably never will be there.  Essentially it’s vehicle for putting women in tight clothes and making them overly friendly.  Word around the street, though, is their wings and cheese fries are top notch.  Being the guy magnet it makes no apologies to be, they also have sports packages available.  So we’re gonna find out this week if Hooter’s is a great place to watch sports as well as the talent.

Pick It Standings Week 06: Bored with Florida

song-chart-memes-peppers-songs

The weekend of football left us a little deflated.  There was much hype going into the Florida vs LSU game but it ended up being pretty boring.  The other games on the docket were pretty uneventful.  It’s saying something when the most exciting game of the week came from the Big 10 of all places.  The pick it standings this week reflect that.  There were lots of easy calls and people missed most of the same picks.  Ho hum.  The next week should spice up at bit, especially with the Red River Rivalry coming our way.

You may notice the results are a little slim.  Well we don’t include the picks where everyone else chose the same.  So for instance, this week everyone picked Virginia Tech, Penn State, Oregon, Alabama, Miami, and BYU.  They missed South Carolina, Oklahoma State, and TCU.  With that out of the way we once again point out Krizzou being the lone rebel and going with Baylor against Oklahoma.  Good call by Mangino is Fat!!! for picking Arkansas.

We’re almost at the middle of the season and the pack is starting to break away.   Minus any major upsets, it looks as though it will be a three person race between KSU finally makes a bowl again, Katpak, and Mangino is FAT!!!  There’s a battle brewing for the cellar, too, between the Purple Yeti and Daniel Thomas is the man!  But there’s still plenty of season left over and now that many of the Top 25 teams won’t have that many weekends off, the points should bump up.  Get ready, because the BCS standings are coming out next week.

Nick and Jake’s is Half that Great

It was a different day Saturday afternoon.  The cold spilled in over the midwest, the clouds filled the sky, and we were actually making the set of night games for the barspot.  We huddled ourselves in the late afternoon/evening around the big bar in the sports bar section of Nick and Jake’s.  Sports bar section you say?  Yup, that’s different too.  Nick and Jake’s really isn’t a sports bar.  But yet, it is.  Bar or not, the games on the television screens kept us nice and cozy.

Pick It and Stick It: Don’t Choke On It

Dignose

We were unfortunate last night not to witness the Nebraska and Missouri game.   Though the radio was on, we couldn’t get a good grasp of just how muddy and mucky it was to play.  2-0 at halftime is a wacky score.  But we didn’t expect Missouri to choke away the game and 27 points in the fourth quarter.  What did we find out?  Nebraska has the fast track to the Big 12 North title.  Missouri is much like their new quarterback Blaine Gabbert:  young, inexperienced, talented, but not yet ready.  The Tigers did reload this year, but the bullet jammed up a bit last night.  Let’s jam on to this week’s Pick It and Stick It:

Barspotting: Staying Late at Nick and Jake’s

nicakandjakes

It’s the opening weekend of Conference play and we will be heading to good ‘ole Overland Park to take in some games at Nick and Jake’s.  Their dealio is they have one owner who like restaurants and one who likes sports bars.  Obviously we will be spending most of the time in the bar spot (pun intended).  Will this split decision location play to their benefit?  We’ll find out this weekend.  There are some BIG games going on Saturday night so plan on us getting there a little later in the afternoon.  Hope to see y’all there.

J. Murphy’s Brings Out the Irish in Every One

Western Europe meets the western Kansas City area as we trucked way the heck out to Shawnee to view Saturday’s selections at J. Murphy’s Irish Pub and Grille.  The games lined up for the afternoon seemed like a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.  The traditional fare sprinkled the joint so well we were waiting for a Contra Dance to bust out.  And the food, well the food was all it was cracked up to be, Irish wise.  But there was so much more than really cheesy Irish references (which we will stop as of now) at J. Murphy’s.

It’s not Atlanta, but We’re Doing the Dirty Birdie’s

Some weeks, you don’t know what you’re going to run into when you pick a place you’ve never been to before.  So when we strolled up to Birdie’s Pub and Grill,  we weren’t expecting much.  They didn’t have a website and the only information we got about the place was on Google Maps.   Walking in, however, things turned completely different.  Yes, it was bigger, but for some aspects it wasn’t necessarily better.  The goal of the week was to watch some Nebraska vs Virginia Tech and head to a BBQ.  We accomplished the mission.  Here’s the report.

Pick It and Stick It: Spreading It Thin

bigpicker

It’s another Friday and it’s time for another Pick It and Stick It update.  This weekend we have a couple of intriguing match ups and some obvious picks as well.  The picks were all done and set way back Wednesday for the Purple Yeti.  Let’s hope everyone else remembered.  I guess that’s the ‘Stick It’ portion of the fantasy league.   Some of you may be wondering wht the ‘Spread’ portion of the table means.  The ‘Spread’ is how many points the favored team must win by to get a win.  This helps out immensely when a sure blow out is about to happen.  This also helps out the folks in Vegas to justify booking those kind of lopsided match ups.  So without further ado, here’s this week’s pick set:

Barspotting: A Little Birdie’s Pub Told Me To Go There

birdiespub

This week’s barspot brings a suburban locale.   Usually in suburbs around this time, you smell the freshly mown lawns and the first scents of fall.  You even hear the birds chirping.  In that spirit, we will watch the action at Birdie’s Pub.  Um let’s see here.   Another way to think of this place is that we are going to a golf players fantasy sports bar.  So while we see the golf season wind down, we can see the college football season pick up.  Okay, now we’re just blabbing on.  We really don’t know what’s in this place because we’ve never been there before.  Hopefully, the local crowd won’t chirp to much while watching the games.  We also hope that Birdie’s does better than par for the barspotting course.  Now bring on the beer cart babes.

Games:

Notes:  Alrighty some of the better games are happening tonight and tomorrow.  The Georgia Tech and Miami game should be good but we’re not sure if a fight will break out or not.  We know the Battle for the Milk Can can be rough and it’s up to Fresno State to spoil Boise States frothy pour toward BCS busting run.  The Governor’s Cup is up for grabs when Louisville heads to Kentucky.  Too bad both programs are a little blah right now.  Kansas will handle Duke better than the basketball contest.  The O-Rourke-McFadden Trophy (a leather helmet) is what Boston College and Clemson will be shooting for Saturday.  The Trophy first showed up just last year.  Missouri will roll.  Florida will take out its frustrations on Lane Kiffin’s smack talk against his Tennessee team.  In what will be the game of the week, we will see two great defenses pound on each other with Nebraska going to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech.  Due to a scheduling difference, Texas Tech agreed to play Texas this weekend.  For us it means an early treat and a revenge game for the Longhorns’ Colt McCoy.  UTEP and New Mexico State ride the Battle of I-10 to vie for the Silver Spade.  Finally we get Kansas State heading to UCLA.  So the starting QB is out with a broken jaw and 4 other players are suspended from UCLA for this game.  I still think this game has home victory written all over it.

Barspotting: We Almost Forgot About Tanner’s

tanners_official_logo

This is a little embarrassing.  We’re getting all hyped up for another great year of college football and stumbled a bit in our preparation.  You see, we naturally assumed that in the last two years of this fine and dandy operation that we actually had a barspot at a Tanner’s Bar & Grill location.  This is not true.  So to make up for it, we are kicking off our 3rd season by hanging out in one of the storied sports bar traditions for the Kansas City Area.  Join us at the Waldo district to kick the season off in style and welcome to another year of KC College Gameday!

Crib Sheet: Strapping It On

football_helmet_lg

Here we go people!  We’re strapping on the helmet and hunkering down for another season of college football.  To get us ready, we have a cavalcade of previews and a new redesign coming down the pipe.  Until then we’ll produce another news heavy Crib Sheet for all of you to digest.  Depending on the schedule, we may be dropping the Crib Sheet  here and there during the season.  There’s always news to munch on.  So grab a bib and some silverware and chow down on this week’s Crib Sheet:

  • It’s the wave of the future for the Texas Longhorns and monitoring football players.  They make select players swallow temperature pills to make sure their body temperature doesn’t get too high during practice.  The NCAA should take a look at these little doo-wops for all of the players that have a high risk for sickle cell disease.
  • There’s a big jumble and shuffle going down in Manhattan.  Kansas State coach Bill Snyder is moving around transfer Daniel Thomas from quarterback to running back, among other movements that also saw running back Logan Dold moving to safety.  It seems that ‘Wildcat’ might mean more than just a team this year in Snyder-land.
  • It seems Florida State is getting a head start on the 2 game series with Oklahoma by being the snitcher on old guy type linebacker Mike Balogun.  Balogun is suing the NCAA for eligibility because of some issues with semi-pro playing before he joined Oklahoma.  One of the Seminole officials noted the story of Bolgun during last year’s national championship game and dug further after the Big 12 was okay with Oklahoma’s ‘light’ investigation.  Ruh roh.  Seems like there will be some major unsportsmanlike penalties in this two game series.
  • Oklahoma State has gone dark until the week of their opener against Georgia, at least to the media.  They need to prepare all they can for the big game because it will set the tone for the Cowboy’s whole season.  It should be a great game and has the potential for being the game of the week.
  • Oklahoma backup linebacker Tom Wort went down with an ACL injury and is out for the season.  Combine that with the questions of Tom Balogun’s eligibility and we’re looking at a depleted linebacking core for the Sooners.  This may affect their chances of going all the way this year.
  • Joseph Kassanavoid, redshirt freshmen quarterback for Kansas State, up and got arrested for domestic battery.  Officials for Kansas State stated that the incident will be handled internally.  We won’t be surprised if this guy gets booted from the team.  Tune in to find out.
  • The Associated Press Top 25 Preseason Poll came out over the weekend and in the biggest non-surprise of the year, the Florida Gators are number one, followed by the Big 12’s Texas and Oklahoma.  Everyone and their mother are picking the Gators but the ball is up in the air for who will meet them in the title game.  We’re not sure who will be there, but tune in for our preview in the next couple of days.
  • Meanwhile, Lou Holtz gives his analysis on the AP poll and pulls a prediction of all predictions out of his always sounding drunk mouth.   According to Holtz, Notre Dame will be in the national title game.  Give to Lou for being a homer.  He makes a good case pointing to 11 returning offensive starters, 7 home games, and a weak opponent’s schedule.  The schedule is going to kill them and we’re not to sure they are that big on offense.  Nice to hear Lou slur his words again, though.
  • Husker running back Quentin Castille was dismissed from the Nebraska squad due to team rule violations.  That’s a shame as it will hurt their chances to live up to the preseason Big 12 North title prediction.  Even ESPN Big 12 blogger Tim Griffin is switching his prediction.  Indeed, maybe the media were drinking the red kool-aid, but there are questions all over the North this year.  Again tune in for our Big 12 predictions in the next couple of days.
