Barspotting: Coach’s Draws Up Our Football Watching Gameplan

coachslogo

We’re finally recovered from our road trip to Lawrence last week and now we’re ready to hit another barspot.  This week the KCCGD crew is heading down the state line and watching some spooky activities at Coach’s Bar and Grill.  A main stay for good number of years, they claim to be the oldest sports bar in Kansas City, we finally make our way to see if the place is scary.  Yup, it’s Halloween too so maybe we’ll dress up in our favorite sports announcer outfit and call the game live.  Who should we dress up as?  Let us know in the comments.

Games:

Notes:  Not that many big time games going on this weekend as we’re guessing that many people will be trick or treating instead.  Why did they schedule the bigger games for the evening?  Many fathers will be inside making the moms go out and take the kids while watching USC take on Oregon and Texas taking on Oklahoma State.  Sure there’s rivalries like the battle for the Ram Falcon Trophy, the Battle for the Rag, and the World’s Largest Cocktail Party, but outside of that it’s all Big 12 games.  Nothing much else here, good luck trying to pay attention while the kids ring the doorbell.

Barspotting: Stadiumspotting Returns to Lawrence

Memorial Stadium

But not for the Sunflower Showdown.  My beautiful and football lovin’ girlfriend is letting the Purple Yeti hitch a ride with her and her bid-ness down to Memorial Stadium for the big Oklahoma vs Kansas game.  Both teams roll into the game suffering a loss to Texas and Colorado respectively so one of them will bounce back.  Which one will it be?  We’re not sure.  How many of us will be sober?  Well, we know the answer to that one.  At any rate, we’ll report on every debaucherous action, on and off the field.

Barspotting: Check Out These Hooter’s

hooters

It was bound to happen.  It could only be so long before we found out way there.  And so, thanks to your voting, we will be barspotting for KC College Gameday at Hooter’s.  If you don’t know what it is, then you probably never will be there.  Essentially it’s vehicle for putting women in tight clothes and making them overly friendly.  Word around the street, though, is their wings and cheese fries are top notch.  Being the guy magnet it makes no apologies to be, they also have sports packages available.  So we’re gonna find out this week if Hooter’s is a great place to watch sports as well as the talent.

Barspotting: Staying Late at Nick and Jake’s

nicakandjakes

It’s the opening weekend of Conference play and we will be heading to good ‘ole Overland Park to take in some games at Nick and Jake’s.  Their dealio is they have one owner who like restaurants and one who likes sports bars.  Obviously we will be spending most of the time in the bar spot (pun intended).  Will this split decision location play to their benefit?  We’ll find out this weekend.  There are some BIG games going on Saturday night so plan on us getting there a little later in the afternoon.  Hope to see y’all there.

Barspotting: Pointing to the Scoreboards

scoreboards

This week finds us in the middle of Johnson County and at a neat little place called Scoreboards.  We’ve been there before the blog started off and we’re pretty sure it’s a good time.  There used to be a Scoreboards in Manhattan but we don’t think it’s the same bar.  Sometimes sports bars survive on their own without a website, but we think these guys could use one.  It was super hard to find a pic or logo of the place.  Maybe we can open up a KCCGD hosted space for bars around the area.   Or post some ideas for Scoreboards below and we’ll talk to the manager Saturday.

Barspotting: J. Murphy’s Law

jmurphys

So the voters spoke and we’re feeling Irish this week at J. Murphy’s.  It’s not March yet, but we have a feeling it’s going to end up like it by the time we get done here.  So let’s run down the stats on the bar.  Green decor. Check.  Beer (with Guinness).  Check.  Irish Whiskey. Check. Corned Beef and Cabbage. Check.  All football games. Check.  Looks like they meet the requirements for an Irish sports bar.  Come out with us Saturday to find out if the proof is in the Shepard’s Pie.  Erin go bragh!

When: Saturday, September 26, 2009
Time: 12:00 pm

Games:

Notes:  It’s a somewhat of a trap game for Missouri as they head to Nevada Friday night.  Kansas hopefully will turn their punches toward Southern Miss and not the basketball team when they host the Golden Eagles.  Virginia Tech plays another game of the week when they host newly resurgent Miami.  The Illibuck Trophy is up for grabs as Illinois heads to Ohio State and hope for an upset like last time.  Speaking of upsets, Iowa hopes to do the same thing this year to Penn State like they did last year and derail their national title hopes.  The Shillelagh Trophy is up for grabs when the Fighting Irish take on the Purdue Boilermakers.  Texas Tech takes a long road trip to Houston and look to duke it out against the newly christened cinderella Houston Cougars.  Finally New Mexico and New Mexico State meet for the 100th time this weekend in the Battle of I-25 and the Maloof Trophy.

Barspotting: A Little Birdie’s Pub Told Me To Go There

birdiespub

This week’s barspot brings a suburban locale.   Usually in suburbs around this time, you smell the freshly mown lawns and the first scents of fall.  You even hear the birds chirping.  In that spirit, we will watch the action at Birdie’s Pub.  Um let’s see here.   Another way to think of this place is that we are going to a golf players fantasy sports bar.  So while we see the golf season wind down, we can see the college football season pick up.  Okay, now we’re just blabbing on.  We really don’t know what’s in this place because we’ve never been there before.  Hopefully, the local crowd won’t chirp to much while watching the games.  We also hope that Birdie’s does better than par for the barspotting course.  Now bring on the beer cart babes.

Games:

Notes:  Alrighty some of the better games are happening tonight and tomorrow.  The Georgia Tech and Miami game should be good but we’re not sure if a fight will break out or not.  We know the Battle for the Milk Can can be rough and it’s up to Fresno State to spoil Boise States frothy pour toward BCS busting run.  The Governor’s Cup is up for grabs when Louisville heads to Kentucky.  Too bad both programs are a little blah right now.  Kansas will handle Duke better than the basketball contest.  The O-Rourke-McFadden Trophy (a leather helmet) is what Boston College and Clemson will be shooting for Saturday.  The Trophy first showed up just last year.  Missouri will roll.  Florida will take out its frustrations on Lane Kiffin’s smack talk against his Tennessee team.  In what will be the game of the week, we will see two great defenses pound on each other with Nebraska going to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech.  Due to a scheduling difference, Texas Tech agreed to play Texas this weekend.  For us it means an early treat and a revenge game for the Longhorns’ Colt McCoy.  UTEP and New Mexico State ride the Battle of I-10 to vie for the Silver Spade.  Finally we get Kansas State heading to UCLA.  So the starting QB is out with a broken jaw and 4 other players are suspended from UCLA for this game.  I still think this game has home victory written all over it.

Once again here are the facebook pool results:

Barspotting: Johnny’s Tavern Tries to Save the P&L

Johnnys Tavern

This week we’re going back to the Power & Light District and more specifically Johnny’s Tavern.  One of the other overly expensive bars there closed downand Johnny’s swooped in to take the torch.  Now, we aren’t fans of the P&L, especially for sports, but we want to give Johnny’s Tavern a chance to totally save the day.  Johnny’s Tavern is a namesake dedicated to sports bars, especially for the Kansas fans out there.  So we’re sure they will make a decent attempt of fielding a proper sports bar Downtown.  We’ve been to a different Johnny’s before so we are pretty sure we’re gonna have a good time.  See you there.

When: Saturday, September 12 2009
Time: 12:00 pm-ish (we’ll try to make the rivalry)
Where: Johnny’s Tavern in the Power and Light District. 1310 Grand Boulevard, Kansas City, Missouri 64106 816.268.2260

Games:

The second week of college football has calmed down a bit.  We needed it too, last weekend was a huge blast off and we need to clean the ash off our faces.  This week is not without its sparklers, however.  The Cy-Hawk Trophy is up for grabs again in the great Iowa vs Iowa State rivalry.  It’s also been a long time since college football was as pumped as it is this year for the Michigan vs Notre Dame game.  The only Top 25 meeting is USC vs Ohio State and it should be epic.  The rest of the Big 12 looks like mop up work, but don’t be surprised if a few more upsets come that way.  We’re looking at you Colorado and Kansas State.  Anyway, it should be fun and we hope to see you out this weekend.

For what it’s worth, here’s the result of poll from the Facebook Fan page.  Next week’s poll should be up alot earlier next week.

Barspotting: We Almost Forgot About Tanner’s

tanners_official_logo

This is a little embarrassing.  We’re getting all hyped up for another great year of college football and stumbled a bit in our preparation.  You see, we naturally assumed that in the last two years of this fine and dandy operation that we actually had a barspot at a Tanner’s Bar & Grill location.  This is not true.  So to make up for it, we are kicking off our 3rd season by hanging out in one of the storied sports bar traditions for the Kansas City Area.  Join us at the Waldo district to kick the season off in style and welcome to another year of KC College Gameday!

BCS Title Game Makes Me Race To JJ’s Other Place

BCS Title Logo

To quote Keith Jackson, “WHOA NELLY!”  What a game Monday night!  Apparently a month of planning from Coach Tressel can help the Ohio State Buckeyes make a game against the Texas Longhorns.  The McCoy/Crosby connection toward the end of the game reminded me of the Harrell/Crabtree connection made from Texas Tech earlier this year.  The Longhorns eeked out of the Fiesta Bowl with a win and the Ohio State Buckeyes go home a BCS bust (again).

Bowl Pick It Standings: Post Holiday Belly Burst

With the Christmas portion of the holidays over, it’s now time to gear up for the Bowls.  It’s a weird time of year.  The bowls have started but it still feels pretty empty from the downtime between the end of the regular season and now.  There’s been 11 games already but it feels like no one’s really played.  That will change tomorrow night, however, but more on that in a second.  First, here is the Bowl Pick ‘Em update:

Rank Pick Set Points Correct Picks
1 i choo choo choose you 108 6 of 11
2 Crazy Train 102 5 of 11
3 Bowies In Space 95 6 of 11
4 Hokey 92 8 of 11
5 Sasquatch Willy 91 5 of 11
6 Wharf Rats 83 5 of 11
7 B-Nutz 78 4 of 11
7 M I Z – Z O U 78 7 of 11
9 I Win! 46 4 of 11
10 I Heart Bill Snyder’s Perineum 37 2 of 11
10 Pat’s PIcks 37 5 of 11
12 Snyder for President 31 3 of 11
13 Goobersinmynose 28 4 of 11
14 keltron3000 17 4 of 11
15 Sometding else to kill time 15 3 of 11
16 Hit it and Quit it 0 0 of 11

The confidence points skews the actual picks as Hokey (the Yeti’s other alter ego) and MIZ-ZOU are 1 and 2 with the total number of correct picks.  Since the confidence ranking kicking in, i choo choo choose you is number one with a Simpsons bullet.  We’re getting into the meat of the Bowl schedule this week so look for some major movement coming from the top and bottom of the standings.

The Yeti is still recovering from the month long pig out fest from the holidays, but will unloosen the belt and mosey on down to JJ’s Other Place to watch Missouri take on Northwestern.  It’s a curtain call for Chase Daniels and we’re hoping that the Tigers can kick off the Big 12’s bowl season with a victory.  I’m not too up to date on the Northwestern Wildcats, but they are from the Big 10 so that’s all this Yeti needs to know.  Go Tigers!

Bowlspotting: That’s Right, We’re Spotting the Bowls

There’s more than 10 pins there

With the regular season over, we need something to do between the various holiday events.  So why not watch all of the Big 12 bowl games?  Fortunately we have five days straight of bowl games that feature a Big 12 team during the last week of the year.  How is the KCCGD staff going to handle the load?   We don’t know.  Chances are we’ll post in the morning where we will go and then talk about the game later on that night.  If we go out to all of the games.  It’s gonna be hard and crazy for sure.  The BCS National Championship game will be spotted somewhere, but we’ll build up to that when the time comes.  For now, here’s the Big 12 representation of the bowl schedule (thanks espn.com):

Missouri, after falling back to earth this year, tries to do to the Big 10 Wildcats what they did with the Big 12 version in the Alamo Bowl.  The Oklahoma State Cowboys will be shooting ducks against Oregon in the Holiday Bowl.  The Gator Bowls marks a New Year’s Day return for the Nebraska Cornhuskers as they take on Clemson.  Ole Miss tries to outshoot the left out Texas Tech Red Raiders in the Cotton Bowl.  The Texas Longhorns look toward the Ohio State Buckeyes to take out their frustrations in the Fiesta Bowl.  Finally, the Oklahoma Sooners circles the wagons for the Florida Gators in the BCS National Championship Game.  That’s one heckuva lineup and this empy week and a half of hype does little to pass the time on our way to Bowl Season.

Barspotting: Making a Grand Fool of Ourselves at the Granfalloon

The Granfalloon

This week, we’re making a quick pit stop the Granfalloon.  The only memories I remember of this place is being a crowded multi room bar.  After further inspection on their website, it seems like they have a pretty good amount of HD flat screens for barspotting.  So why not give it a shot.  The Big 12 Championship is at 7pm so hopefully we squeeze on in there.  This is the last barspot before bowl season, so we hope it’s a good one.

Barspotting: Chanches are We Won’t get Ticketed at Jaywalker’s

Jaywalker’s Sports Bar & Grill

Jaywalkers just happens to be a Kansas University bar.  No really.  So what better time of the year to hit up the place then when the Jayhawks have the week off?  As noted before, we love irony here at the KCCGD and we are game to keep in motion.  Their website says they are the best Big 12 sports bar in KC and we’re gonna put that to the test.  Who knows?  Maybe they will prove to be numero uno.  There’s one thing for sure, the Purple Yeti is eyeballin’ that big ole Sweet 16 burger.
