Media days are over and camp is about to start. College football is in the air! We aren’t there yet but we have the last top 5 mascots we haven’t covered in Mascot Monday from Phil Steele’s Preseason Top 40 list. This week, we have #13 Virginia Tech and it’s lovable little Hokie Bird. We’re going to answer just what the heck is a Hokie as why and turkey is the mascot for a college sports team. If we ever had this feature run through the football season, Hokiebird’s feature would absolutely fall before Thanksgiving. It’s not November and the Hokies are projected to be tough so let’s see what the bird has to offer.

Mascot Monday: Cocky
This week on Mascot Monday we take a look at Phil Steele’s #21 pre season top 40 team in South Carolina and their costumed buddy Cocky. Yes, the Fighting Gamecocks have a high falootin’, arrogant little bird named Cocky. We’ll find out whom he took over the job from as well as some other moments in Cocky’s history that let him to his current winning attitude. We’re counting down the rest of the mascots we’ve yet to cover leading up to the final Mascot Monday of the year. After that, it will be football time and no more mascot for the rest of the season. Now, let’s check out Cocky.
Mascot Monday: Cardinal and Tree
Okay so we were a couple of days late, but when you combine moving the KCCGD headquarters, ‘Merica’s birthday, and yours truly’s birthday, time gets tight. So here we are sitting in the middle of the week after a long haul and holidays pumping out yet another mascot to review for Mascot (mostly) Monday. This week we hit up Phil Steele’s number 34 ranked preseason team in Stanford with its official and unofficial mascots. The path to having a color be a mascot had some controversial bumps, while the path for the tree just seemed plain goofy. That said, we’re glad we’re back at the keyboard to bring you another mascot to munch on.
Mascot Monday: Lightning
We’re inching closer and closer to a new college football season and we are counting down the mascots that have yet to be profiled on Mascot Monday, using Phil Steele’s Pre-Season Top 40 Rankings for 2010. This week we are looking at #32’s Middle Tennessee State’s Blue Raiders and their mascot, Lightning. He’s kind of this Pegasus looking thing that came from a line of mascots wrapped in some controversy. The other interesting note from this week’s entrant is just how high a Sun Belt Conference team made it in the rankings. We’ll get to that and Lighting rocking the stage so let us strike right through this.
Mascot Monday: Knightro
Welcome back to another Mascot Monday and the first official day of summer! Now that the expansion feeding frenzy is behind us, it’s time to start looking toward actual football. Guess what? College football returns in a little over two months! We are breaking the mascot post pattern and will reel off mascots we haven’t covered that are listed in Phil Steele’s Top 40 preseason rankings. Running down the list, we see our first one in the University of Central Florida. The #36 preseason ranked UCF Knights employ the auspiciously looking mascot by the name of Knightro. No, not the American Gladiators reject, but a giant knight.
Mascot Monday: D’Artagnan and Blue Blob
This week we are going to look at the very opposite sides of mascotdom, all from one school. We like to point out either how fierce a mascot can look versus how cartoony a mascot can look. Both have its plusses and both have its minuses. But what if you’re a school that wants to cover all of the bases when it comes to mascots? Well, you do what Xavier did and have a mascot to fill each role. Let’s take a trip down to Cincinnati, Ohio and check out Xavier’s D’Artagnan and the Blue Blob.
Mascot Monday: Bill the Goat
It’s another Mascot Monday, but more importantly it’s another Memorial Day here at the KCCGD. Last year we took a look at Army’s mascots, but this year it’s the Navy’s turn. So why is a goat, Bill to be specific, the mascot for the Midshipmen? We’ll find that out as well as look at Bill throughout the years. As an added bonus, we’ll get to Bill fire off weapons and blow up stuff in between. All fun aside, let’s remember the men and women who perished in combat while we take a journey through Bill the Goat’s decorated achievements, both live and plush style.
Mascot Monday: The Leprechaun
It’s a great day for us here at the KCCGD headquarters. Later today we will wrap up out series on the Big 10 Expansion, and we are taking a look at the last real candidate for expansion we have yet to cover in our mascot playground. Not only that, but we are out of Big 12 mascots to feature. So what better way to knock out two birds with one stone, or in this case a fist, with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Leprechaun. Believe it or not, this green fella was not the original mascot way back when. Also, the mascot is one of the more unique type of mascots out there. Smack down some shepherd’s pie and pull back a Guinness, we are about to crazy Irish here.
Mascot Monday: Roc the Panther
This week we will take another look at a potential power pill to the Big Ten’s Pac-Manning of college football in the Pittsburgh Panthers. This Big East team has been linked to a rivalry with Penn State and generally fits well with other potential teams like Syracuse and Notre Dame. So how does ‘Roc’ the Panther stand up to mascot standards? We’ll find that out as well as where this guy came from and why he’s the ‘Roc’. So kick back and see if Roc rocks our world if, much like Sex Panther Cologne, he works 60% of time every time.
Mascot Monday: The Scarlet Knight
Much ballyhoo is blowing around the college football land due to the blowhards up north in the Big 10. It seems they want to expand their television footprint or whatever it is. Part of their master plan includes penetrating the much valued market in New York. How will they do this? By going after a low hanging fruit by the name of Rutgers. So in honor of one of the teams that is part of the speculationalooza, we’ll be taking a look at Rutgers mascot, the Scarlet Knight.
Mascot Monday: Artie the Artichoke
So a new addition found its way in the KCCGD headquarters kitchen collection a couple of weeks ago in the form of a small deep fryer. The little thing is cute but it packs a powerful crisping punch. We’ve dipped onion rings, breaded chicken patties, mushrooms, and even peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in that thing. So for this week’s Mascot Monday, we will take some time to honor a mascot whom we think would taste great after a batter and fry treatment. We’re sure an artichoke will taste great fried, but how does it stack up as a mascot. Let’s find out with Scottsdale Community College’s Artie the Artichoke
Mascot Monday: Ralphie
When we started doing the Mascot Monday posts here at the KCCGD, we knew we had to go over each and every one of the Big 12 mascots. Welp, today is the big day. This is our last mascot we will feature here from the Big 12. Now, there is some talk that a certain conference that is expressing certain expansion talks, so who knows? Maybe there will be more teams that we haven’t featured yet be wrapped into the loving arms of the Big 12 and enable us to check out its fluffy cheerleader. Until then, we saved the best for last. This week on our last Big 12 mascot, we will be taking a big look at Ralphie from the Colorado Buffalos.
Mascot Monday: Goldy Gopher
We’re heading up north and the Big Ten for this week’s Mascot Monday. Goldy Gopher is the main mascot at the University of Minnesota campus. Once a proud member of the marching band, Goldy now appears at all sporting events. This week we’ll find out how that happened, as well as why you shouldn’t go too far in mimicking. We’ll also take a look at what Goldy’s doing to help clean up that mistake. So hanker on down with your favorite gnawin’ log and join us as we take a look at Minnesota’s own golden child, Goldy.
Mascot Monday: Cam the Ram
Another week of mascots and we are rolling on to a beautiful spring and chugging toward the summer. So in tribute to the days of winter gone, we are going to take a look at a mascot from a place that’s still probably pretty chilly. Cam the Ram heads up the mascot duty for the Colorado State Rams and he enjoys it from both the four legged and the two legged variety. History will show us that Colorado State had a couple of two legged and four legged mascots before Cam the Ram’s debut. So put on your hiking boots, we’re heading of the mountains.
Mascot Monday: The Billiken
This Easter weekend, I couldn’t help but think about hte big ole Easter Bunny and all of the good chocolate candies he brings to the girls and boys. Then I thought, man what a lucky bunny. If a funny thing, everything rabbit related can be described as being lucky, especially its foot. Believe it or not, this week’s mascot also can from a symbol of luck. Luck in college football usually describes the losing team’s excuse. The St. Louis Billiken represents the culmination of the craze and need for luck in the athletic teams for a university. Sit tight, there’s no lucky charms here to get after.
