Conference play kind of opened up last weekend for the Big 12, but this weekend we have a couple of head to head match ups. I don’t know which game will be more exciting, the Texas vs Iowa State or Kansas State vs Baylor. The obvious is the Kansas State game but if you remember last year, Iowa State went down to Austin and beat the Longhorns. The local media around here is chirping about how it’s a revenge game but the player interviews talk about how they expect to handle Iowa State easily. We’ll find that out Saturday as well as just how real Kansas State’s defense really is. Here’s this week’s Pick It and Stick It: Continue reading Pick It and Stick It 2011 Week 05: Time To Play For Real

Barspotting: Laying up to the Backspin Sports Bar & Grill
Another week of barspotting and I’m going for the trifecta. It’s been 2 great weeks of college football watching and I need one more joint to make me believe that Austin is serious about sports bars. The last two weeks were easy because it was close to downtown. Now it’s time to throw Austin for a loop and go for that ‘remote neighborhood family bar’ joint. Well, I’ve found down south in the Backspin Sports Bar & Grill. Saturday I’ll find out if the remote locations of Austin bring the game like the places closer to the heart of the city do.

Crib Sheet: Crispy Tan
No fireworks last weekend but lots of fun and sun by the cool. So yeah, I’m feeling like a KFC extra crispy. It’s not enough to stop me from bringing this week’s Crib Sheet:
Pick It and Stick It: Snot Rockets
The Big 12 used to be known for high scoring shoot outs. This year sees a return to defense as either the stars moved away to the NFL or schools coached up their kids. The only two top 10 offenses in college football this year that come from the Big 12 are Baylor and Oklahoma State. Guess who happens to play each other tomorrow? That game will be a shootout and is for the top spot in the Big 12 South. This year is turning out to be majorly weird. Don’t let that vex you as we set you up for this week’s Pick It and Stick It.
Crib Sheet: Nice With Pumpkin Spice
Halloween is Sunday and we are cooking up various items around the place with pumpkin in them. The roasted pumpkin seeds with cinamon and nutmeg were awesome but so where the pumpkin muffins. Grab your favorite pumpkin related food and check out this week’s Crib Sheet:
Pick It Standings 2010 Week 01: Short and Sweet
Alrighty, welcome to the first standings update for the Pick It and Stick It of 2010. We’re going to switch things up a bit this year. Last year, we broke the design of the site and our fingers trying to just map out what happened each week and who did what. In the end, we realized that most people just cared who was winning and didn’t care about anything else. So we’re blowing away the Weekly Picks and just reporting the standings. If you want to check out the full stats, click on the ‘Standings’ link and it will take you to our group. If you want to see more, please sing up and play along too. No worries though as we’ll still touch on the highlights of the weekend’s picks and events. So here’s the Standings:

Barspotting: Johnny’s On the Spot Again
We are back again going out to the best of what Kansas City sports bars has to offer in terms of college football. Like the storied tradition of college football, we have a tradition of going back to the best bar of last year to start out this season for KC College Gameday. We had no way of knowing back at the beginning of last September that Johnny’s in the Power & Light would be the best but here we are planning the first Barspot of the year down there. With every television fit into every nook and cranny as well as the crazy touch table poker game, Johnny’s hit the spot on all things needed for a great sport viewing experience. So come back out with us Saturday as we head back out there to enjoy Johnny’s and scoff at that ridiculous KC College Live thingy going on in the outdoor area.
Magnifying the Expansion Part 3: Methods to Their Madness
So here ware trucking through our Big 10 Expansion, running over our introduction and Big 10 history along the way. Today our focus beams toward why the Big 10 wants to expand. Like we said yesterday, money is a big part but not the whole pie. Other slices include the silver bullet of television, the need to grow, scratching the itch that’s been bothering them the past 20 years, channeling baseball’s New York Yankee style of athletic competition, and the dust collecting on their trophy shelves. Think of money as the crust that keeps the filling in the pie. It’s alot to handle so we’ll try not to drive you crazy with the reasons.

Magnifying the Expansion Part 2: History Lesson Time, Kids
Yesterday we laid the groundwork for the expansion drama that’s girdling up the loins of college football at the moment. Today we are taking a look at how the history of the Big 10 led us to this point. There’s over 100 years of data to go over, but we are blowing through the earliest parts and focus on the last 20 years. Expansion is in the blood of the Big 10 and they’ve acted on it. They tried many times and failed but were able to pull one team in the fold. So let’s ring up the good Doctor and fly away in the TARDIS back to the start of the Big 10.

Barspotting: Stadiumspotting Returns to Lawrence
But not for the Sunflower Showdown. My beautiful and football lovin’ girlfriend is letting the Purple Yeti hitch a ride with her and her bid-ness down to Memorial Stadium for the big Oklahoma vs Kansas game. Both teams roll into the game suffering a loss to Texas and Colorado respectively so one of them will bounce back. Which one will it be? We’re not sure. How many of us will be sober? Well, we know the answer to that one. At any rate, we’ll report on every debaucherous action, on and off the field.

Barspotting: J. Murphy’s Law
So the voters spoke and we’re feeling Irish this week at J. Murphy’s. It’s not March yet, but we have a feeling it’s going to end up like it by the time we get done here. So let’s run down the stats on the bar. Green decor. Check. Beer (with Guinness). Check. Irish Whiskey. Check. Corned Beef and Cabbage. Check. All football games. Check. Looks like they meet the requirements for an Irish sports bar. Come out with us Saturday to find out if the proof is in the Shepard’s Pie. Erin go bragh!
When: Saturday, September 26, 2009

Notes: It’s a somewhat of a trap game for Missouri as they head to Nevada Friday night. Kansas hopefully will turn their punches toward Southern Miss and not the basketball team when they host the Golden Eagles. Virginia Tech plays another game of the week when they host newly resurgent Miami. The Illibuck Trophy is up for grabs as Illinois heads to Ohio State and hope for an upset like last time. Speaking of upsets, Iowa hopes to do the same thing this year to Penn State like they did last year and derail their national title hopes. The Shillelagh Trophy is up for grabs when the Fighting Irish take on the Purdue Boilermakers. Texas Tech takes a long road trip to Houston and look to duke it out against the newly christened cinderella Houston Cougars. Finally New Mexico and New Mexico State meet for the 100th time this weekend in the Battle of I-25 and the Maloof Trophy.
