Chappelle’s Dangles Many Helmets But Only One Game

The holiday weekend was rough on us and we barely made it back to Kansas City in time for some prime college football. Our hair was as greasy as the fried turkey we gobbled up for meal number two Thursday. But we made in, dropped off our stuff,, and headed to North Kansas City and Chappell’s Sports Museum and Restaurant. After running the gauntlet of food and family over the weekend it was nice to dig into the warmth and surprisingly quiet Chappell’s.

Barpsotting for Pick It and Stick It: Mashed Together Like Potatoes

nav_r1_c1

Last week was the beginning of Rivalry Week and now we are fully realizing its end.  We had out schedule jacked up due to Thanksgiving and we’re sure you’ve had yours as well.  It’s all for a good thing, however, as we should give thanks to what we have at least once a year.  So in celebration of Thanksgiving and our shortened week, we are combining our Barspotting and Pick It and Stick It posts.  And without further ado, we are Barspotting at Chappell’s Saturday.  Yes, we’ll be just back in town to watch the Border War between Kansas and Missouri.  We’re going up to North Kansas City and watchin some football as well as checking out their collection of sports memorabilia.   Thankfully, we are just in time to go over the picks too and we hope you didn’t forget to make yours on this short week.

When: Saturday November 27, 2009
Time: 2:00 PM
Where: Chappell’s Restaurant & Sports Museum, 323 Armour Road, North Kansas City, MO 64116

Rivalries are abound as just about every game on the list is a rivalry.  So in between the turkey and gravy and shopping and family, check out these games.  Some of them sound cool like the Duel in the Desert with Arizona and Arizona State.  Some of them sound goofy like the Egg Bowl with Ole Miss at Mississippi State.  No matter the name, they all mean something big to the teams and offer up a tradition only seen in college football.  Big 12 wise, we missed out on the Nebraska and Colorado game but that’s alright.  Nebraska won and it didn’t matter.  We have the Bedlam series for Oklahoma State and Oklahoma tomorrow.  The ‘Pokes will get a good shot at a BCS bid provided they win and Texas does next week against said Cornhuskers.  The other major game for the Big 12 is the Border War.  Kansas needs a win to be bowl eligible and Missouri needs a win to get 2nd in the North.  Who’s gonna win?  Come on out to Chappell’s and help us find out.

Pick It Standings Week 12: Gobble Gear Up

22_turkeyeating_3_lg

It’s a short week here as we’re are in training for Thanksgiving Thursday.  We thought about calling up Mark Mangino to help us train but we don’t like being verbally abused and we most certainly don’t want him to hog all of the food.  So here we are stretching and exercising for the marathon of food we get to sprint through.  A couple of things to note in setting your eat order is:  Do you use dark meat or white meat?   Are you a gravy fan?  Pumpkin or  Apple pie?  These answers can lead you to the top of the glutton mountain and be crowned the Feast King.  Now here’s the Pick It and Stick It standings:

Pick It and Stick It: Massive Goober

mangino-nose

Rivarly Week rolls up into Saturday and we want to spend some time giving homage to what could be Mark Mangino’s last football game.  Rumor has it that the kids will lay down Saturday and then be up to play their last game against Kansas next weekend. Mark Mangino has been a huge butt of jokes in recent years because of his orca-fat status.  Now being a former orca-fat guy myself, I can sympathize with him (no I’m not writing a Whitlock article).  Being that big doesn’t excuse you from being a total jerk.  If Mangino was throwing his weight around alot, then it could be very damaging.  Maybe one or two incidents would be overlooked but if it’s been more and more frequent, then the whole body of work will make him more guilty.  It looks as though the evidence against him is bursting at the seams and we’ll see this guy on the unemployment line next week.  See you later, Mark Mangino, it was fun while it lasted and we hope to see you on The Biggest Loser soon.

Pick It Standings Week 10: Yawnster of a Weekend

lady-yawning

We’re back this week with another round of Pick It Standings.  Not much of a shake up this weekend in terms of college football and it’s reflected in the pick set.  Really when you think about it, there was no real big upset over the weekend, unless you count USC falling down hard to Stanford.  Everybody else won as expected and they are turning to corner for the home stretch of the season.  This is going to be a tight one to the end, both for the BCS race and the Pick It race.  Here’s this week’s lap:

Quick Pit Stop at Paddy O’Quigley’s For a Deserved Break

Paddy O'Quigley's

Okay, so the few of you out there that actually read the blog may be wondering, why so late today?  Welp doing some freelancing on the side left this guy knee deep in a bunch of cables and computer parts. No worries, however, as we are coming in close to the deadline to talk about our tiny little trip out to Paddy O’Quigley’s to watch a little football, celebrate a 30th birthday, and jam out to some peeps belting out face melters on karaoke.

Crib Sheet: Who’s Next?

WCW.WWEGoldbergWhosNext

The line for the BCS title  is thinning as the number of undefeated teams are going down week by week.  Last week it was both Iowa and Oregon that lost their ticket.  Who will go down this week?  We don’t know. But that question singularly defines what college football is and how unique it is to other sports.  It truly is a complete playoff system.  Now some others may not grasp it, but when you look at it year by year, the best teams usually bubble up.  So tune in and see who goes down this weekend.  Until then here’s this week’s crib sheet:

  • Brandon Spikes was already suspended  for one half of the Florida vs Vanderbilt game, but now he went and suspended himself for the other half.  It’s a good thing it’s Vanderbilt because they probably didn’t need him.  Kudos to Spikes, even though it is a big PR move.
  • Meanwhile, Urban Meyer sent video to the SEC officials for a missed late hit on Tim Tebow during the Georgia game.  Okay, it’s football.  Florida is turning it into a big wussy game.  Southeaster Conference:  Home of the Using Video Evidence to Justify Being Whiners.
  • Dez Bryant’s appeal to the NCAA was rejected and now he’s going to the NFL Draft.  This kid got the shaft big time.  If the NCAA was to make an example out of someone, do it to someone who actually did something wrong.  From now on the NCAA will be called the NC-SS.
  • Texas fans are already booking flights and reserving hotels for Pasadena.  Longhorns, the season isn’t over yet.  Don’t jinx your team now.  If you do, I’ll buy a couple of tickets off you for half the price.
  • Jahvid Best suffered a more serious concussion last weekend in a touchdown dive for California.  This first one happened the week before and this lost him consciousness.  Sit him for the rest of the season, coach.  Let him recover.
  • The Pac 10 approved Oregon’s request to reinstate LeGarrette Blount.  I guess it took a major loss to okay him back to the field.  Hopefully, he’ll learned his lesson and help the Ducks punch their way to the Rose Bowl.
  • Welp, it took being ranked 4th in the BCS Standings for TCU to sell out a home game.  Granted, it’s against top 16 ranked Utah, but this is first time since 2006 that they had a sellout.  This is why mid-cons don’t get respect.  The fans need to show up for the games to help support their teams.  Then they can get the big tv time and respect.  At least they got some cool new uniforms.
  • Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz tells us that Ricky Stanzi is out until bowl season.  This is a big blow to Iowa as they had BCS title chances before he went down and now they are just struggling to make a BCS bowl.  At least there will be no Big 10 team in the title hunt this year.

Pick It Standings Week 09: Candy Hangover

halloween_hangover

Halloween is over and we’re still feeling the hurt over the load of candy and Joose.  We rocked many parties and kinda wished we were at one that had Kansas State at Oklahoma on.  Oh well.  We are still enjoying the various fun sizes of candy.  Our favorites include Snickers, Butterfinger, and Milky Way.  But enough about candy.  We’re sweet on the Pick It Standings now.  We also have some tasty BCS standings to go over as the polls turned sweeter to some winning teams over some other teams that had some sour victorious.  Get your toothbrush ready, you’ll need it after this.

Crib Sheet: Too Full to Write, Seriously

fullplateoffood

We have a full plate here this week on the Crib Sheet so in the interest of avoiding any more food references we stuffed into the last couple of posts, here’s this week’s Crib Sheet:

  • Steve Spurrier, South Carolina head coach, complained about tape on the field after their shilacking they took from Alabama last week.  So Alabama head coach Nick Saban says they won’t do it again.  The kickers were using to place kicks and now the need some other guide to help the ball find the way.  Southeastern Conference:  Home of the Ticky Tacky Whining.
  • Orrin Hatch is poking an prodding his trident in the direction of the Justice Department and President Obama, trying to get a probe of the BCS system again.  Hey, it’s an easy target in Utah and we hope he gets relected for all of this posturing and grand standing.  Once again, this shows that people from Utah suck.
  • The officiating crew from last week’s Florida and Arkansas game were suspended due to a blown personal foul call against an Arkansas player.  When you are Florida and on top, the calls will go your way.  Southeastern Conference:  Home of Protecting the Frontrunners.
  • While LeBron James is busy kicking out professional football players, he’s also giving advice to Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor.  James says he’s trying to help Pryor handle being a super star athelete.  What?  You have to win games, and more importantly championships, to be a super star.  Right now Pryor is the head guy for a lame-o offense.  An offense that just got upset by Purdue.
  • When Texas Tech loses bad, count on Mike Leech to say something witty about it.  This time, it was something about fat girlfriends.  We love him even though his team usually rolls Big 12 North teams.
  • The Dallas Fort Worth airport and American Airlines are now doing direct flights to Manhattan, Kansas.  What does that mean?  Recruiting trips for Kansas State will be less of convenience.  The Wildcats had to cut costs for private flights which meant planes going to Topeka or Kansas City held recruits.  Will this help?  Who knows.
  • Goldy Gopher got the slap down for mocking prayer at the beginning of a game last week.  I can see that happening if they played Notre Dame or Boston College, but doing it before a Penn State game is a little ridiculous.  His punishment?  10 Hail Marys and a bad football team.
  • Bob Griese will have to sit a game for making a taco joke on a latino NASCAR driver.  Was it because it was racially insensitive or because it was a really bad joke?  Griese did get his education at Michigan, you know.
  • Speaking of Michigan, there’s a letter of inquiry from the NCAA about the whole practicing too long trouble some players kicked up a month ago.  How could the Wolverines be practicing too hard?  They’re terrible.  Maybe if they were undefeated but they stink too much to be practicing too long.  If anything, they are not practicing enough.
  • Much to no one’s surprise, Sam Bradford will have a season ending shoulder surgery and then enter the NFL draft.  It seemed a little awkward when Bradford left the Texas game a couple of weeks ago.  The hit wasn’t as massive as the first injury.  Right then I think we all knew Bradford wasn’t gonna chance it.  So will he do well in the NFL?  Tune in and find out if we ever kick up a KC GameDay blog.
  • Iowa Governor Chet Culver goofed up and congratulated only Iowa in a historic win over the weekend.  Yes, the Hawkeyes are 8-0 for the first time in forever, but it seems he forgot the Iowa State win over Nebraska in Nebraska for the first time since 1977.  If the Cyclones make a bowl, this guy will be elected out of the office.
  • John William Lomax III will be charged in the murder of UConn football Jasper Howard.  He went to the party but his lawyer says he has nothing to do with it.  We’ll find out in court just what happened.
  • The NCAA ruled that Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant will be suspended for the rest of the season.  He lied to the NCAA when they went sniffing around a visit he had with Deion Sanders.  This seems a little harsh.  With other players punching people and coming back, you’d figure they would let him come back and play.  To bad for the Cowpokes as they could use him against Texas this weekend.

Pick It and Stick It: Packing One In

stuart_nose

It’s the first road trip of the year for KCCGD crew and we’re getting ready today for the fantastic Oklahoma and Kansas match up in Lawrence.  Typically people leave first thing in the morning and head back after the game.  It’s nice for us because the game is at 2:30, but even the 11:00 am games require the big morning road trip.  Usually that means packing up the night before and going over the football watching checklist.   Food, booze, drinks, gear, and radios all need to be packed up and ready to rock.  So tonight we’ll be busy making sure we are fully represented for the tailgating and the game.  On top of going over this week’s pick set:

Crib Sheet: Hitting the Half Way Mark

half-way-mark-on-rarotonga

This week marks the middle of the college football season.  What have we learned so far?  The top teams are still at the top.  Texas and Florida hold destiny in their hands.  Florida might have a rougher road but the coarse has been set for the predicted title match up.  The rest of pack?  Not so much.  Especially in the Big 12.  Oklahoma fell off the map big time, with Sam Bradford getting knocked out early with a shoulder injury.  Kansas State is first in the Big 12 North, which punctuates the mediocrity thriving up there.  The BCS busters are hanging around, except for the teams from Utah thankfully.  The KCCGD crew is batting over .500 for hitting up good sports bars.  Let’s hope the last half of the season is as exciting as the first half.  Here’s the crib sheet :

  • Former Penn State running back Austin Scott filed suit against all of the people involved in the rape charge against him that was eventually dropped a couple of years.  There was not enough evidence to bring to jury.  Scoot claims that everyone involved injured his career and is seeking damages.  Rape is a serious charge and if someone gets wrongly accused and is ousted because of that, then the people involved should get punished.
  • Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount is on the campaign trail to revive his status with the team, this time talking in front of teens with other current players.  It’s going to be a long road back but the more work he does, the better chance he will have at getting back on the field.  Let’s hope he makes it.
  • Dennis Dodd for CBS clearly points out the writing on the wall of Oklahoma Sooners fans, Sam Bradford’s college career is over.  After going down again against Texas, we doubt he’s gonna come back and try to re injure the shoulder or something else.  Landry Jones will be your guy from now on.
  • On the BCS front, we have a new political action committee started to fight the BCS.   Yup it’s the Playoff PAC!  A bunch of Belt Way people will get together and try to elect Congressmen to vote on playoffs for the BCS.  Never mind that the guy running it just happens to be a Utah alumnus.  Seriously, people from Utah suck.
  • Maryland and South Carolina will wear camo uniforms for their game November 14th for Veterens Day.  Sweet!  Now if Army could only buy a clue and bring back the sweet camo garb they sported last year.  Bring it back!
  • Jasper Howard,  a Connecticut cornerback, was fatally stabbed after their homecoming game Saturday as well as another player.  Head coach Randy Edsell claims that there wasn’t any fighting but some ‘verbal jostling’ that started it.  So far there are two arrests made but they may not be connected directly to the stabbing.  Our thoughts go out to the Uconn players and Jasper Howard’s family.

Pick It Standings Week 06: Bored with Florida

song-chart-memes-peppers-songs

The weekend of football left us a little deflated.  There was much hype going into the Florida vs LSU game but it ended up being pretty boring.  The other games on the docket were pretty uneventful.  It’s saying something when the most exciting game of the week came from the Big 10 of all places.  The pick it standings this week reflect that.  There were lots of easy calls and people missed most of the same picks.  Ho hum.  The next week should spice up at bit, especially with the Red River Rivalry coming our way.

You may notice the results are a little slim.  Well we don’t include the picks where everyone else chose the same.  So for instance, this week everyone picked Virginia Tech, Penn State, Oregon, Alabama, Miami, and BYU.  They missed South Carolina, Oklahoma State, and TCU.  With that out of the way we once again point out Krizzou being the lone rebel and going with Baylor against Oklahoma.  Good call by Mangino is Fat!!! for picking Arkansas.

We’re almost at the middle of the season and the pack is starting to break away.   Minus any major upsets, it looks as though it will be a three person race between KSU finally makes a bowl again, Katpak, and Mangino is FAT!!!  There’s a battle brewing for the cellar, too, between the Purple Yeti and Daniel Thomas is the man!  But there’s still plenty of season left over and now that many of the Top 25 teams won’t have that many weekends off, the points should bump up.  Get ready, because the BCS standings are coming out next week.

Pick It and Stick It: It’s Getting Hard

nose-picking

Well hard and cold.  Hard because the teams are starting to even out and we are actually seeing tougher calls for the spread.  On top of that, the confidence points don’t work out too well anymore.  There won’t be hardly anymore Off bets to drop the big points on.  Cold because of the weather.  It’s getting nippy out folks.   Bundle up and bring the Irish coffee.

Okay so the only Off just happens to be Boise State.  The BCS Bronco Busting Broncos  are riding there way to a somewhat cake conference schedule.  Will they make it?  UC Davis will help.  Cincinnati is supposed to roll Miami of Ohio even though it’s a rivalry game.  The other Miami is hosting Landry Jones and Oklahoma.  Looks like the loss to Virginia Tech was enough to put the Sooners out ahead on the spread.  Georgia and LSU have the smallest spread because, well, it’s the SEC and it’s Defense.  Did you see LSU last week?  Yeah it will be close.  The other close game will be the Paul Bunyan Trophy contest that pits Michigan against Michigan State.  Last week’s gift for the Wolverines is why the are favored 3.  It’s 3 points from the referees and the Big 10.

GameDay: BCS and Quick Return Programs

miami20logo

Believe it or not, I’m a big supporter of the current BCS system.  Anymore I see major complaints coming from sports writers who lack the creativity to come up with something compelling.  Either that or they think they control college football like baseball writers.  At any rate, the major beef from them nowadays comes in the form of mid-conference teams not getting a fair shot.  You see Utah and Boise State lifted up high as a examples that the system doesn’t work.  I’m not so sure about that but there is something that’s happening this week that is making me take a second look.

Barspotting: A Little Birdie’s Pub Told Me To Go There

birdiespub

This week’s barspot brings a suburban locale.   Usually in suburbs around this time, you smell the freshly mown lawns and the first scents of fall.  You even hear the birds chirping.  In that spirit, we will watch the action at Birdie’s Pub.  Um let’s see here.   Another way to think of this place is that we are going to a golf players fantasy sports bar.  So while we see the golf season wind down, we can see the college football season pick up.  Okay, now we’re just blabbing on.  We really don’t know what’s in this place because we’ve never been there before.  Hopefully, the local crowd won’t chirp to much while watching the games.  We also hope that Birdie’s does better than par for the barspotting course.  Now bring on the beer cart babes.

Games:

Notes:  Alrighty some of the better games are happening tonight and tomorrow.  The Georgia Tech and Miami game should be good but we’re not sure if a fight will break out or not.  We know the Battle for the Milk Can can be rough and it’s up to Fresno State to spoil Boise States frothy pour toward BCS busting run.  The Governor’s Cup is up for grabs when Louisville heads to Kentucky.  Too bad both programs are a little blah right now.  Kansas will handle Duke better than the basketball contest.  The O-Rourke-McFadden Trophy (a leather helmet) is what Boston College and Clemson will be shooting for Saturday.  The Trophy first showed up just last year.  Missouri will roll.  Florida will take out its frustrations on Lane Kiffin’s smack talk against his Tennessee team.  In what will be the game of the week, we will see two great defenses pound on each other with Nebraska going to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech.  Due to a scheduling difference, Texas Tech agreed to play Texas this weekend.  For us it means an early treat and a revenge game for the Longhorns’ Colt McCoy.  UTEP and New Mexico State ride the Battle of I-10 to vie for the Silver Spade.  Finally we get Kansas State heading to UCLA.  So the starting QB is out with a broken jaw and 4 other players are suspended from UCLA for this game.  I still think this game has home victory written all over it.

Once again here are the facebook pool results:
