Crib Sheet: No Buzzword Bingo for these Meetings

It’s the middle of May and many of the big time conferences are in the middle of meetings.  Athletic directors and coaches nationwide are now meeting to check up on things and discuss to goings on of their respective schools.  Now usually, this will blow over with not much of a drop of news to report.  This year, however, it’s getting bigger attention because of the expansion talk coming from the Big 10.  Where last year there might have been one or two beat writers covering the meeting, this year it’s a media hoopla.  No, the KCCGD Crib Sheet did not travel to the Big 10 meeting, but the Big 12 one is in Kansas City next week so we may crash that party.  In the meantime, read up on our Big 10 expansion series and check out this week’s Crib Sheet:

  • Blair Kerkhoff speculated last week how Kansas City could be affected with Missouri and/or Nebraska leaving the conference.  We’ll cover it later this week, but this is a nice roundup of how serious of a move this is for the local area.
  • Rivalries could be affected as well, especially with Kansas and Missouri.  Lew Perkins hinted heavily last week that Kansas might have a hard time doing a rivalry game if it wasn’t in conference.  Big time decisions with consequences are fun for Missouri right now.
  • Mike Sherman’s been away to Iraq talking to Aggie troops.  He went out there for the Aggie Muster, which is a roll call of fallen Texas A&M soldiers on April 21.  He ended up being late and had to stay later due to the Iceland volcano blowing ash.   Sherman’s got our respect here for spending his own dough and sticking through to keep up the tradition.
  • Notre Dame and Miami are looking to renew their rivalry.  Sounds good to us.  Back in the day, this game meant national championships.  Today, well, these teams are struggling to get back to the big time.  Maybe this renewed tussle will help them get back on the track.
  • It seems like there is some trouble going on over in Lawrence.   We might have not mentioned it before, but there is a big brewhaha over former fundraiser Rodney Jones’ abuse over tickets and plane ride solicitations.  On the field, first stringer defensive tackle Jamal Greene is off the team because of his arrest for a little breaking and entering and armed robbery.  At least they are cleaning things up now.
  • The speculation for the Big Ten expansion now grows toward the Sun Belt, according the head honcho Jim Delany.  Let the fake reports triple because of this.
  • Bennie F. Abram, the Ole Miss player who collapsed and died on the field during a workout, had the sickle-cell trait.  The enlarged heart due to that caused the seizure.  When  will the NCAA institute a rule that monitors this disease in football players?  Every year there’s a new kid that dies because of this.  Where is the clamor?

Magnifying the Expansion Part 1: KCCGD’s Series On The Big 10 Expansion Plan

It was bound to happen.  The discussion blew up late last December and now we have legitimate motions telling us that the Big 10, and college football, is about to run into some big changes. Ever vigilant, we here at the KCCGD Headquarters decided to toss our hat into the speculation ring and offer up our analysis as to just what the hell is going on.  It’s plenty to chew on so we will be breaking up into bite size chunks of creamy goodness.  At just the right time too, the Big 10’s athletic directors and coaches are meeting this week and the Big 12’s crew will do the same next week.  Why does the Big 12 matter? The conference is among some of the institutions affected by this move.  Strap it on, because we are about to ride the hottest off-season college football activity we haven’t seen in a long time.

Crib Sheet: Adding a Notch to the Expansion Talk

So the Big 10 expansion speculation that’s been building the last couple of months has finally come to a head here at the KCCGD Headquarters.  We’ll give our thoughts about the whole shebang in the next couple days, but we wanted to whet your appetite with some tasty nuggets of information in the Crib Sheet.  You, too, can munch down on expansion rumor to fill your belly with enough information to win your sports bar argument.  Sports screaming at its finest, folks.  On to the Crib Sheet:

  • In case you thing we’ve forgotten, Mike Leach’s case against Texas Tech has a hearing coming up May 14th and last week Texas Tech officials filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit altogether.   They say the sworn statements are all that is needed and that Leach’s treatment was an offense worthy of termination.  Leach on the other hand is making the case that it was about his contract and the bonus he was about to receive.
  • Kansas State, ever the team to take on tough new challenges, forged a mega deal to face the fearsome University of Texas San Antonio.  Who?  Yes that’s right, The Roadrunners, led by former Miami coach Larry Coker, will face the Wildcats in their inaugural FCS seasons.  Man, UCLA isn’t that tough.  Leave it up to Bill Snyder 2.0 to find the scrubs of the scrubs.
  • Here is your 2010-11 college football bowl schedule!  Just in case you missed the Big 12 match ups, new Big 12 blogger David Ubben follows up with schedule for the respective conference teams.  Kudos goes to the Insght Bowl for making the jump from the NFL Network to ESPN.
  • Notre Dame tight end Mike Ragone was feeling green big time last Saturday.  No, not green for the Fighting Irish, but green for rolling doobies.  New coach Brian Kelly is going to bitch slap him around a hit and call it a done deal.  It’s the new century, football players get stoned all the time, even the pious ones.
  • Our homeboy Kevin Kietzman here at WHB 810 am filled the airwaves with reports that the Big 10 offered invitations to the conference to Missouri, Nebraska, Rutgers, and Notre Dame.  The wave of denials built up so big that Big 10 commissioner Jim Delany had to send out comment denying the report.  This summer’s only going to get hotter with speculation.
  • So the speculation has been about what conferences will do to react to the Big 10 Expansion.  Well, on the Big 12 side it seems they may be exploring options with a pact between them and the Pac 10 (see the play on words?).  Basically, the two conferences will have something similar to the hardwood series we enjoy but on the football field.  The speculation is that there is also a potential Rose Bowl spot that could be up for grabs too.  Remember, it’s speculation only.

Crib Sheet: Blowing Our Noses to Divas

Quick somebody get us some facial tissue and some decongestants.  It’s allergy season here at the KCCGD Headquarters!  We’re sneezing our heads off and we’re barely making it through the week.  That’s not stopping us from delivering your favorite weekly news roundup:  The Crib Sheet!  It’s chock full this week with a ton of diva grandstanding from college conference officials.  It’s a good thing our noses are stuffed because we think alot of that talk stinks.  On to the Crib Sheet:

  • So the graduation rate for college athletes are on a curve.  The College Sport Research Institute factored in longer years and lighter classloads to determine that the reported 79 percent rate is actually 54.8 percent, compared to 73.7 percent of other students.  Looks like the NCAA needs to take some more math classes.
  • All the hype leading up to the commissioner meetings this week was whether or not the Big 10 would accelerate expansion plans.  Big 10 commissioner Jim Delany came out of the meetings to speak on this rumor to reporters.  “Nope” was pretty much all he said.  Crisis averted.
  • Northwestern will play Illinois at Wrigley Field.  Finally!  All those people in Chicago will have an opportunity to root on two disappointing local teams that don’t play baseball.  Way to go guys!
  • The BCS came out with a 3 pronged formula to help determine who gets an automatic bowl bid after the 2012 season.  They take the highest ranked BCS team, the total BCS numbers for the conference, and the number of teams in the top 25 to determine who gets the nod.  This is an obvious gesture to the Mountain West Conference, whose Boise State team has been rolling the last couple of years and has an opportunity to start in the top 3 once the preseason rankings come out.  It will be interesting to see how this adds to the pressure and expectation the Broncos have this year.
  • So the first round highlights of the NFL Draft include Tim Tebow going to the Denver Broncos.  Huh?  What is he gonna do?  Be a running back.  Good thing the Big 12 represented big time with 9 picks going from the conference, including the top 4.  Way to go Big 12!
  • Bill Snyder 2.0 is weighing the decision to get surgery on his torn ACL and MCL.  More and more we’re thinking that Snyder 2.0 is a cyborg version of the original.  It’s only reason we can come up with to answer Snyder’s statement that it doesn’t hurt much.  What’s up with that?  A jammed finger hurts like hell.  This guy just walks it off.  He’s hiding a gun in his leg, we swear.
  • The NCAA approved two more bowls for a total of 35, including the Yankee Bowl and the Dallas Football Classic. The later is the former Cotton Bowl and will have a place on New Year’s Day.  Huzzah!  This is the kind of expansion we enjoy here.  Not the kind where you at more teams to the playoff.  New Year’s Day next year will be mega stuffed with more football.
  • We probably should let everyone know that if an expansion from the Big 10 happens, expect the SEC to counter move.  Yeah, it’s going to domino all over the place.  We really just need two conferences.  That way we can determine a champion the easy way.
  • Coming back to the somewhat near future, ESPN announced its 2010 College Football Primetime schedule and we have a whole bevy of games from the Big 12.  The Lonestar Showdown with Texas A&M and Texas on Thanksgiving should be a treat.    So’s the rematch between Nebraska and Kansas State on Oct 7th.  Football can’t get here anytime sooner.

Crib Sheet: Passing the Time by Dodging Balls

The Crib Sheet returns!  We’re in the first lull of the year as Spring Practice is right around the corner.  The second lull is the summer, of course.  We here at the KCCGD find many things to pass the time.  Dodgeball for instance.  It’s not exactly football, but it is alot of fun.  We think that colleges should catch on to this trend and officially support dodgeball in their athletic programs.  It can work.  We all just have to will.  DUCK!  Here comes the Crib Sheet:

Crib Sheet: Conference Mushroom Power Up

The big talk the last week or so has been conference expansion.  Well, never fear, because here at the KCCGD headquarters, we are perfectly happy with out size.  Now there have been some talks of expanding out to St. Louis or up into Omaha, but does KC St. Louis Omaha College GameDay sound great?  We say no.  Granted, the barspots might be a little more glorious if we end up at an Old Chicago in St. Louis, but for now we are perfectly satisfied with what KC has to offer in bars and feel no pressure to hitch up and roll out every week.  That said, here’s this week’s Crib Sheet:

  • What is the deal with other conferences wanting to poach schools from the Big 12?  First it was the Big 10 and Missouri and now it’s the Pac 10 and Colorado.  Yes it makes sense for both side to get the television markets.  What this will signal is some massive changes (and payouts) to all the schools in the Big 12.  Do you honestly believe Nebraska will go to the Big 10?
  • So we know about Missouri, but the Big 10 talking with Texas?  Huh?  Okay, no we’re thinking other conferences want to consolidate into just one big conference with all of the television markets.  That’s the only way that makes sense.  Texas won’t have an easier challenge up there.  Just strange.
  • Goodbye Tim Griffin.  We used his quick news on the goings on for news here at the KCCGD headquarters and we’re sorry to see him go.  We wish him the best and we hope to see him or hear from him real soon.
  • The NCAA rolled out a rule severely limiting recruiting by coaches who are deemed as the successor in the head coach line at colleges.  Naturally, Texas is not happy with this.  What are they worried about?  They are Texas.  They get the best kids in Texas.  Recruits do not need to promise of some other coordinator to tip scales for them.
  • JoePa will get lasers shot into his eyes.  Yup, no longer will we see the iconic, thick-framed, bespectacled Joe Paterno, but now we will see the I big nosed, mega old dude on the sidelines.  Hey, it just goes to show that you’re never too old to get procedures done to your body.  Let’s hope he doesn’t get pectoral implants next.
  • The NCAA wants to take away touchdowns for taunting.  Okay, we get it.  Sportsmanship is truly a noble attribute.   But doesn’t it say something about society as a whole when we have to legislate it?  Why take a away a touchdown?  A penalty assessed on the kickoff or extra point should be enough.  Those are kids out there and they have a hard time controlling their emotions.  The NCAA needs to focus on making the kids safer first.
  • Bo Pelini got yet another raise.  He goes up to $2.1 million per year through 2015.  Congrats to everyone’s favorite gum chewing Cornhusker.  That’s gonna buy him a load of Bubble Yum.
  • Here’s this week’s police blotter:  Frosh Mizzou quarterback Tyler Gabbert got the Owen Wilson treatment and broke his nose in a fight inside a Gumby’s Pizza.  The ladies still find Owen hot, somehow, so he should be good.  Meanwhile, LaMichael James, the Frosh offensive player of the year for the Pac 10, is in jail for strangulation, assault, and menacing.  Welp, we might have a LeGarrate Blount situation here.  Only difference was one was on a field against a dude and the other was off the field against lady.  Oregon should kick this guy off the team.

Crib Sheet: Senior Toilet Bowl

The Senior Bowl is coming this week and the NFL Network has LIVE coverage…..of the practices.   Okay, so up to the minute updates on who practiced well and who practiced crappy is fine, but non stop coverage of weigh-ins and such?  You gotta be kidding me.  I guess we live in a day and age where picking through a player’s stool and reporting on what he had for lunch is considered news.  Plus we have enough cameras out there to film it.   Please, just read the Crib Sheet:

  • Looks like Mike Leach’s lawsuit against Texas Tech will move forward, according the to judge in the case.  Leach’s camp wanted a fast track but didn’t get it.  We said it before and we’ll say it again, it may be a couple of years before this one is over.  Meanwhile, a local news channel, through the use of a public records act, unc0vered no written complaints of Leach and players.  Until then, here comes a mediator!
  • The East beat the West last week.  No, it was another exciting game of Axis and Allies, but it was the East-West Shrine Game!  Northwestern quarterback Mike Kafka tossed a late touchdown to help the East win.  Alrighty, then.
  • Boise State is celebrating another undefeated season and complaining that they don’t have a shot for the top BCS honors.  Never mind the fact that they turned down a 2-1 proposal from Nebraska on their scheduling.  If you remember, earlier this year, Boise State complained that they could never schedule big time opponents including Nebraska.  So now this time around they turn away from an invite from the Huskers?  That’s small-time mentality there.
  • On the flip site, Non-BCS conferences received  a record amount of bowl money this year, mainly due to the Fiesta Bowl match up in TCU and Boise State.  They are still way behind their BCS counterparts, but the baby steps are moving forward.
  • Tim Tebow’s planning on doing a pro-life commercial during the Super Bowl and, naturally, some women’s groups are urging CBS not to air.  It is a very political issue but we’re thinking since organization backing Tebow’s appearance paid for the spot, CBS could use more green than urging to bump the commercial.

BCS Title Thoughts and Year End Review

Okay, freshly back from a wedding in California (not MY wedding), I’m now ready to actually talk about the BCS title game and the year that was college football.  We’re going to talk about the game that could’ve been, the season that was bookended by injuries, and some other interesting notes that popped up over the season.  So, while this is a little late, sit back and enjoy us on your little trip through college football memory lane.  Please keep your arms and head inside the windows.

Holiday Wishes from the KCCGD Crew

Happy Holidays everybody from the KC College Gameday Crew!  It’s been a couple of years now of doing this blog and we’ve learned alot along the way.  We also are very thankful for all 12 of you that actually read this internet football rag.  It’s not a perfect blog and we strive hard everyday just to make it a little bit better.  We wished it could be perfect, but sometimes great things come from imperfections.   Much along those same lines, we have Christmas wishes we want to share with you this holiday season:

Crib Sheet: Silent Night, Bowl-y Night

Welp last week was a big rush.  This week, all is calm and all is bright.  Christmas is in a couple of days and we are expecting some major snow.  So we can chalk up the lack of news to that and everyone getting ready for bowls.  We are done with Christmas shopping and got our Topsy’s popcorn, so we will be taking a few days off ourselves.  We’ll probably do something around Christmas, but look for a Bowl Pick It update Monday.  Until then here is this week’s meek little Crib Sheet:

  • Former Kansas coach Mark Mangino gets a $3 million settlement from the university for his resignation and termination fo his contract.  He had about $9 million left to go.  Welp he doesn’t have to work for a couple of more years and gets a fat holiday check.  Mangino made out pretty well.
  • It looks like Bill Snyder 2.0 and the Wildcats are looking to pick up scraps leftover from new Kansas head coach Turner Gill’s blowout of the staff.  They are interviewing former defensive coordinator Clint Bowen to fill the vacancy left by Vic Koenning’s departure to Illinois.  This has happened before.  Joe Bob Clements went to Kansas as a defensive line coach even though he played for Kansas State.  He went back home to Snyder 2.0 though and we won’t be surprised if Bowen doesn’t do the same thing.
  • It seems the Big 10 expansion talks have stirred up issues in the Big 12.  Commissioner Dan Beebe expects no change for the Big 12 but glosses over the issues currently in the conference.  Namely, revenue sharing and setting up a television network.  Hey, maybe it will light a fire under the conference to pony up and compete with the other big conferences media-wise.
  • Even though he didn’t come home with a Heisman, Ndamukong Suh has been picking up plenty of awards.  The latest one happens to be the AP Player of the Year.  This is the first time a defensive player ever won the award.  I’m sure his Nebraska head coach, Bo Pelini, congratulated him while chewing gum openly.

Big 12 Bowl Preview and Predictions

Alrighty,  we are in the 1st quarter of bowl season and fortunately we don’t have any Big 12 bowl games until next week.  So we have the opportunity to preview and predict what’s coming up in the next couple of weeks for the Big 12.  We’ll talk briefly about the match up and go into our expert predictions.  Chew on this while you are doing your last minute shopping on Amazon.  Oh and please pick us up something nice while you’re at it.

Kansas State Wildcats 2009 Year End Review

willie the wildcat

Seeing as I graduated from K-State, I figured I would cover them just a little more than the rest of the area teams in Kansas City. If any other fans/alumni of schools around the area want to write for this site, please drop us a line.  That said, everyone predicted that K-State would drop as well this year.  What was expected to be a major blow off year turned into a massive surprise.  K-State fans should be more than happy with what turned out this year in Wildcat football.  It wasn’t perfect, but it was damn close.

Crib Sheet: Tis the Season

53117612.ChristmasShopping-705300

As expected, there is a ton of news this week.  Conference championships are over, coaches are fired, kids are leaving for the NFL, and the bowls are lighting up.  Here’s this week’s Crib Sheet while we go do some Christmas Shopping:

Brooksider Brings Us the Best in Football and Bars

Ahh, nothing like a good ole familiar barspot to round out the year and watch some major championship games. This will be our third year in row heading to the Brooksider Bar & Grill and it’s well worth it. We’ll go over this year’s additions as well as revisit some of the amenities that make the Brooksider to place to be for sports watching. Most importantly however, we have the SEC and the Big 12 Championship game to buckle up and ride along with. So hold on and we’ll tell the tale of the year’s last barspot.

Broosider Inside

This time around the first thing we noticed was how open the joint was. We can’t remember if it happened last year or not, but the they knocked down some walls to make it more open and pleasing. We swear they added even more flat screen televisions since our last appearance. And, yes, we still love the 71 inch plasma television. They added wireless and we were rocking it for the post during the games. There’s nothing else new we really noticed. They still have plenty of space for smoking outside, dancing downstairs, and local bands up front.

Brooksider Downstairs

The Brooksider wasn’t without its faults, however. We understand that fans are needed to circulate air, especially in smoking joints, but it was little ridiculous in this kind of weather. Speaking of which, the front door kept opening up and letting in some wickedly cold air. For their next expansion they need a breeze way. Downstairs used to be the place where the dancing and partying took place, but it’s all gone now. Thank you dress code. To make up for it, they have special parties booked down there, but when we were there it was empty and smelled like sewage. Clean it up, guys.

Brooksider Waitress

The service started out really cool. The first shift waitresses looked pretty cute and they did do a good job of taking orders and accommodation our sitting needs. The 2nd shift waitresses met the standards the Brooksider set as they all matched the beauty we remembered from last time. Although it was a little troublesome when they didn’t know all of the bottles available for the special, they still hooked us up when we needed.

Brooksider Mac N Cheese WedgesBrooksider Bologna

The food always starts with Mac N Cheese Wedges at the Brooksider. We ended up washing it down with their game day special of 5 bucket beers at $15. Get the imports for that deal when you come. It was hard to overlook the $5.99 wing special but the wedges always warms our bellies well. For the second round of foodstuff, we filled our tummy with some fried bologna on toast. It was tasty, but it still doesn’t beat Harry’s Country Club.

We showed up early to knock out a good seat and we were glad we did. We spied the dramatic finish of the Big East title game with 2 touchdowns below 2 minutes to go in the game. It was a shootout all day but Cincinnati pulled out at the end to finish with an undefeated season. We were also fortunate to check out the finish of the Fresno State and Illinois game. A 2 point conversion off a touchdown happened after a deflection and a lineman catch. Already the day started out great.

Brooksider Inside 02

But we were really there to see Florida take on Alabama and Texas take on Nebraska. First up, Florida and Alabama locked horns in the in the SEC title game. It was all Alabama to begin with as Mark Ingrim ran all over the Gator D and Florida had a hard time answering. Florida finally put some points with a field goal around the end of the 1st quarter. Tim Tebow and company tried to keep up in the 2nd quarter, but couldn’t match Alabama’s running game. The Crimson Tide pulled away in the third and their stingy defense was just too much for Tebow to handle. The Gators were outmatched and the better team in Alabama won. Contrats to them.

Next up was the Big 12 title game with Texas and Nebraska. The first half opened up with a couple of costly turnovers for Colt McCoy and the Longhorns. Not to be outdone, Zac Lee lobbed a couple of ducks Texas’ way. It was field position that was the factor as Nebraska took advantage of the turnovers and went up on top 6-0. It took some whittling down, but Texas came back toward the end of the first half and scored on a McCoy draw to cap off a long drive. Not much action for the first half as it was Nebraska’s style of play all the way.

Brooksider Christams Tree

The second half continued in that tradition and it led to a shocker of a finish. We could talk about the third quarter, but the best part of the whole game ended at the end. After a kick return back into Texas’ territory, Nebraska finished again with a field goal to take the lead late. The kickoff wobbled out of bounds and Texas started with the ball and under a minute to go at their own 40.

After a horse collar tackle and a couple of plays, it was down to the last couple of seconds of play. Colt McCoy took the snap in the hopes of running down the clock. He floated the pass out of bounds with no time left on the clock. Or was there? After a review, the Longhorns did have one second. The kicker for Texas lined up and punched in a kick at the end of the game to beat Nebraska and put Texas in the BCS Championship game. Instant Classic.

The Brooksider Bar & Grill lived up to expectations, but they are starting to get a little shaky. Places like Johnny’s Tavern in the Power & Light district is coming up fast to match their stellar service. As for the BCS College Football Championship, we now have a clearer picture. Bowl Season is just upon us and we’re hoping that all of the games are exciting as the majority of the games over the weekend. Hopefully, our breath will be caught up in time just to lose it again.

Pick It and Stick It: Holiday Nosicles

RudolphTheRedNoseReindeer

Here we go into the last week of picks and there’s not that many to choose from.  That’s a good thing, though, because most of our focus is squa’ on the holidays.  Turkey Day is over and it’s a full bore Christmas conga line.  Most of our shopping is done and that’s a first for the KCCGD crew.  Usually it’s a last minute managerie through the isles of crappy malls and Targets.  Since we’re done, we are going to focus on the nicer things for the holidays.  Like  bowl games. After this weekend, we’ll find out who will play who and when.  Tune in as we will make our list and check it twice for bowlspots to watch football games on holiday nights.  But first, here’s the last pick set:
