Oh yeah lot’s of squawking and a talking this week. Media Days are here and the Big 12’s focus this year is the Longhorns Network, not the impending doom of the conference. Although some would say that the network is the started of a long doom for the conference. This week’s Crib Sheet delves into that as well as the usual news items that comes across my desk. So let’s dig in:
Back again this week for another Mascot Monday and we are slowly but surely counting down our list of mascots not yet covered that are in Phil Steele’s 2001 Top 50 list. This week we’ll look at both versions of Southern Methodist University’s Peruna. Most people know SMU as that one football team that had so many NCAA violations in the 80s that they got what was coined ‘The Death Penalty.’ Some people today may connect the dots between ESPN analyst Craig James and SMU as well. But where we’ll be drawing on is the past and present day Mustangs mascot.
Spring is in the air and unfortunately, some of it stinks. Now I could be talking about the Fiesta Bowl scandal or perhaps the NFL lockout. Nope, it’s none of that. It’s the fact that I have to suffer through another summer of baseball before the real American pasttime takes the stage. Fortunately for me I have the Crib Sheet to keep my occupied. Oh and thank you Beano Cook for being awesome.
We’ll get to the big story of the week in the Crib Sheet, but first I wanted to preface that by saying, ‘Huh?’ I can understand that tradition is the lifeline of college football. I get that. I’m just having a hard time imagining why there’s all of this hooplah surrounding the first news item. I mean when I went to K-State, we used to toss spray painted chickens on the court before the Kansas again. PETA was all up in arms and that was it. It seems like everyone in the world is sad about this latest stunt. Read on for the story:
We’re still tucked away with snow here at KCCGD headquarters and it’s time to finally wind things down, college football wise. Spring practices and the draft is coming up, but that won’t be for a couple of months. This week’s Crib Sheet surely reflects that. Now I could waste a couple items with arrests and dismissals, but that happens every couple of weeks anyway. So grab yourself some hot cocoa, sit right back, and enjoy a nice little Crib Sheet:
It’s national signing day! Okay, so it’s not that exciting, but we have some Big 12 updates flying in and I don’t want to take away from the exciting coverage. Usually half the kids that are worth something don’t pan out anyway. It’s a good thing that ESPN covers this overhyped event in the only way that ESPN can over hype. Now on to the Crib Sheet:
It’s the last week of college football and we’ve had enough drama to fill up the entire bowl season. Happy 2011 to everyone out there and I hope you survived any New Year’s Party you decided to attend. New Year’s day saw my annual tradition of going over to Jolly’s parents house and planting myself in one spot for 12 hours of college football. It was a good day for me as the overrated Big 10 went 0-5 that day and the Big 12 went 2-0. That and the left over ham from the New Year’s Party served us well in between meats, cheeses, and crackers. Beefy indeed. Here’s this week’s standings going into the last week:

We’re coming into the last week of the Pick It and Stick It and we have some movement in the standings. We also have some major movement in the BCS Standings. Any kind of movement is great after the weekend that was in Thanksgiving Day turkey massacres. So I’m heading back to the gym and getting ready for conference championship weekend. I also have a play at the Pick It and Stick It Championship so there will be some mental squats done to build up my Pick It muscle. Let’s take a look at the long weekend that was first.

Okay, so no, I’m not talking about VH1 and guests like Chris Jericho and the unfunny guy from The State, I’m talking about college football! Every year I’m reminded that we get piles upon piles of traditional football matchups on top of piles and piles of turkey. This year is a little different, however. The rivalry games are all over the place, but alot of them have national title implications. It’s only halfway through the weekend and already the BCS title race has been blown up, kinda.
You know, when I started this blog, it was all about going out. My main reason was to watch college football at its maximum potential. I couldn’t afford a rig so a bar was the next best thing. I’ve watched some football before at home but this time I’m going all out. The games are spread out perfectly, not unlike a Thanksgiving dinner, this weekend so I figured what better way to graze on the games while I graze on leftovers by staying home and watching it from KCCGD Headquarters. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone out there and I hope you have as much fun watching the great action as I do.

You know, right when I called the division races for the Big 12, last week had to happen. I called Oklahoma State in the South and Nebraska in the North. Now, Oklahoma State needs to beat Oklahoam to win the South and Nebraska needs to win and not have Missouri win to get the North. Okay, time for me to east some corw. I can’ t be right all the time. Fortunatley for the Pick It and Stick It, I’m right most of the time. The only problem this week was everyone else was mostly right. Oh well, here are the results.

Alrighty, the second try to watch some football at my favorite local neighborhood hole in the wall, JJ’s Other Place. I’ve been there plenty at night and now I’ve been there during the day. I’ll stick with being there at night. I forgot a couple of important items as well as the fact there wasn’t that much to watch that day. It was a pretty good time nonetheless. Batten down the hatches, folks, it’s getting to be cold season. The dripping and drooling will now have much more effect. I started noticing it this week. Some people had coughs and sniffles, others taking afternoons off. I, myself, have some kind of weird chest tightness going. Never fear, I just downed some Airborne infused OJ after soaking some Vitamin C Zicam. It’s pretty much the opposite of Four Loko. I suggest if you get the first signs of a cold, use that remedy. Now on to the picks.
Okay, I’m giving JJ’s Other Place one more shot. They didn’t have power for our game last week, even though they were open that evening. So I’m going back to give them a college try for this Saturday. The morning games all suck, but once the afternoon hits we get some Top 25 clashes. Let’s hope that they will have a enough juice for the week for use to enjoy at least one of those. The backup plan, for the first time ever, is Lew’s Grill and Bar.
