This week was light on news what with America’s (and my) birthday being celebrated. That gave me some ample time to go over Phil Steele’s Preseason Top 40 and just tear it apart, with sparklers and blossoms. Watch me tackle that as well as Kansas, Urban Meyer, Ohio State, Kansas State, Baylor, Michigan, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Texas, A&M, Notre Dame, Georgia, Oklahoma State, Mike Gundy, Louisville, USC, Oregon, Chip Kelly, Texas, Florida State, and Alabama. Purple Yeti Roar 75: Behind Steele Bars
This week I actually follow through on some Sunday fun day college football all day talk. And I get to go through a run sheet that is just so criminial. Speaking of criminal, the BCS bowl game predictions from Phil Steele should land him some time up the river. Hop on board while I go through that and Oregon, Chip Kelly, NCAA, Bo Pelini, Nebraska, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma, Chuka Ndulue, ESPN, BCS National Championship Game, Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, Alabama, Ohio State, Texas, USC, Georgia, Notre Dame, Brian Kelly, Florida State, Louisville, Urban Meyer, Big 10, and Big 12. Purple Yeti Roar 52: This Year Has Not Been Faked
Yup, I’ll talk Manti T’eo here in a second, but it’s a whole new year of the Purple Yeti! Yeah it’s been good, but it hasn’t been for Manti or more recently Collin Klein. Look for me talking about that as well as Kansas, Ben Heeney, Kansas State, Shrine Game, Senior Bowl, NFL, Penn State, Al Pacino, Joe Paterno, Charlie Weiss, Oregon, Chip Kelly, Philadelphia Eagles, ESPN, Sporting News, Yahoo Sports, Gawker, and Deadspin Continue reading Purple Yeti Roar 52: This Year Has Not Been Faked
Purple Yeti Roar 50: BCS Bust
Yeah it was a bust of a game for the BCS National Championship. Notre Dame proved it didn’t belong in any league and Alabama pushed the boot down harder on the neck of college football. Don’t fret, there were some highlights in between the ho hum week of college bowls. The highlights include Oregon, Kansas State, Fiesta Bowl, Chip Kelly, Bill Snyder, Collin Klein, Cotton Bowl, Arkansas, Nick Saban, Michigan, South Carolina, Javon Clowny, Outback Bowl, Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Johnny Football. Pick It Standings 2011 Week 02: A Trophy Weekend
Nope, not rivalry weekend, but a weekend so great it deserves its own trophy. Going into last weekend, I was nonplussed about the matchups, but after witnessing three epic games, I’m eating some crow. I may also be eating some crow with this week’s Pick It and Stick It Standings. Now last week, I was in last, but I’ve been bumped up to tied for last! I’m in a hole like Chip Kelly and Notre Dame, but I totally believe I can turn it around. Now on to the standings: Continue reading Pick It Standings 2011 Week 02: A Trophy Weekend
Crib Sheet: Crispy Tan
No fireworks last weekend but lots of fun and sun by the cool. So yeah, I’m feeling like a KFC extra crispy. It’s not enough to stop me from bringing this week’s Crib Sheet:
Crib Sheet: A Hundred and Ten in the Shady Offseason
While I’m battling record heat here in my first summer in Austin, it seems college football is battling an offseason of corruption. At least that’s what it seems like. I think it’s more that the year before we all thought conferences (including the Big 12) were gonna blow up. Now everything is safe, things are going back to normal. That includes kids and coaches breaking rules. Let’s break on over to this week’s Crib Sheet and find out some more:

Crib Sheet: Silent Night, Bowly Night
Happy Holidays from everyone here at KC College GameDay! We’ll be taking a break over the holiday weekend and soak in some presents and bowls. I hope you all have a great time and we’ll see you next Tuesday for an update to the Bowl Pick It and Stick It. In the meantime, here’s this week’s Crib Sheet:
- So Colorado will end up playing California next year. You’re saying, “Duh, it’s a home and home!” Yes, but next year will be different as Colorado will be in the Pac 12 conference starting next year. What does that mean? It means that they are considering calling that game a non-conference game. Weird, right?
- Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen will be the new West Virginia offensive coordinator and the head coach the following year. I guess the coach in waiting thing has been sped up. I also wonder what this does for coaches who are at the top and don’t want to step down.
- So Mark Cuban is thinking of funding a college football playoff system. Wow. Just wow. He failed at buying two baseball teams and he’s itching to spend his money in some other sports arena. Cuban’s plan involves hitting up college athletic directors and presidents to drum up support. He needs to talk to the bowl people. Better yet, he needs to keep funneling money in his non-championship winning NBA franchise. BCS president Bill Hancock bitch-slapped him away, btw.
- The Big 12 Championship Game was the 4th highest rated football game for the season. The ones above had BCS title implications. Just goes to show you that the Big 12 brand can still run strong.
- The New York Times has a nice story about Rowan University football player Matt Hoffman. Hoffman gave up a game to donate some stem cells and saved a guy’s life. Good job, everyone should think about donating something at some point.
- ESPN has an article up about weak tickets sales for some bowls this year. Who’s not on the list? The Missouri Tigers. Good job by the fans for knocking out some tickets sales and showing up.
- Kansas was so close to getting a new athletic director from Tulsa, but Bubba Cunningham turned them down. Strange huh? I’m thinking Tulsa came up with the dough and Kansas didn’t look as posh as Cunningham though. This looks pretty bad for the Jayhawks.
- Big Ten Commissioner Jim Dlenay said that they may rethink the division names for the conference. Why? ‘Legends’ and ‘Leader’s is hilarious. Please keep it, Jim, so I can go back to it when I need a good chuckle.
- Another day, another Nebraska Cornhusker gets a DUI. This time it’s safety Ricky Thenarse. Looks like he won’t be going to the Holiday Bowl.
- Turner Gill landed a pretty great quarterback recruit from the hands of Colorado due to their coaching change. Apparently, Brock Berglund is a dual threat type guy. Let the slow rebuild begin.
- While the Cornhuskers are going through a rough patch of arrests, the fans are having a hard time getting up for the bowl game. Nebraska is actually offering free pairs of basketball tickets for people who buy bowl ticket games. I’m not sure they’ll make their allotment. Awesome.
- Oregon’s head coach Chip Kelly is your AP Head Coach of the Year. When you go undefeated, it makes winning this award easy.
- ESPN’s David Ubben reminds us that the Big 12 had the most consensus All-Americans of all of the conferences. They may be losing teams, but they still have the talent.
Crib Sheet: SXSW Short Edition
Hey, I trucked down to SXSW here in Longhorn Country and Austin, Texas. So who would’ve thunk that we would actually be diligent enough to post another Crib Sheet? Well, we did. Here’s this week’s shortened Crib Sheet:
- BCS head Bill Hancock was up in the grill of Congress for pushing on the BCS money issue. They donts likes it. Meanwhile Orrin Hatch, Utah apologist, is pushing for inside information on the bowl selection process and the BCS. It’s a political battle to the max!
- Former Texas Tech Mike Leach yelled at players. Big time yelling from coaches. Texas Tech hates what Leach and his legal team did in looking for Tommy Tubberville moves before Leach was fired. Finally, Mike Leach and Craig James faced off in the biggest MMA type fight you could ever imagine! Er, deposition. Yup, from political battle to legal battle!
- Speaking of legal issues, Oregon QB Jeremiah Masoli was suspended by head coach for the entire season because of a massive five finger discount. Will his lessoned be learned and will he play again this year? Tune in.
- Former USF heaad coach Jim Leavitt is pulling a Mike Leach and suing his former school over his firing. So more legal battles!
Crib Sheet: Passing the Time by Dodging Balls
The Crib Sheet returns! We’re in the first lull of the year as Spring Practice is right around the corner. The second lull is the summer, of course. We here at the KCCGD find many things to pass the time. Dodgeball for instance. It’s not exactly football, but it is alot of fun. We think that colleges should catch on to this trend and officially support dodgeball in their athletic programs. It can work. We all just have to will. DUCK! Here comes the Crib Sheet:
- Bennie F. Abram of Ole Miss died on the practice field last week. The autopsy will tell us if there was any foul play but as of right now, it just seemed like he couldn’t breath and then died. Our condolences go out to everyone involved in his life.
- The rumor mill was hot that Texas or Notre Dame could join the Big 10. Not anymore. The Big 10 has hired a firm to assist with their expansion plans. They reportedly have a list of about 15 school. Our money is on Nebraska, Iowa State, and Missouri from the Big 12 being on the list.
- The Dayton Daily News has a great story about a one handed safety from their area succeeding in division III football. There’s nothing like a little inspirado to make your week go by faster.
- Chip Kelly dismissed Jamere Holland off the Oregon Ducks squad for an expletive laden Facebook post. The post talked about a Kiko Alonso getting arrested and falsely claimed that the Kiko Alonso was kicked off the team, among other things. This goes to show that you can be very accountable in social media and that players need to be careful what they say, even online. Alonso IS suspended for the 2010 season, however.
- Joe Paterno’s glasses were auctioned off for charity at $9000. JoePa recently opted for Lacik surgery so he doesn’t need them anymore. What other iconic college football items could go this high for charity? We’re thinking maybe Rich Rodriguez’s tear catcher, Mark Mangino’s blanket-sized bib, or Pete Carroll’s recruiting cloaking device.
- Ole Miss students voted to commence searching on a mascot to replace Colonel Reb. As you may know from reading this blog, Colonel Reb was banned from inside the stadium in 2003. So the students finally decided that they needed something inside to cheer on the students. Poor Reb.
Crib Sheet: Licking Our Wounds
We made it through the first week of college football, but not without some bumps and bruises. Injuries were all over the news in the last week, including the Purple Yeti’s back issue. Fortunately he has a myriad of pills to numb any pain. Oklahoma Sooners fans are probably still numbed from last Saturday’s upset loss. So we will dedicate this week’s Crib Sheet to recovering from any mental and physical injuries. 5 out 7 doctors agree the Crib Sheet has soothing properties. Kick back, relax, and enjoy:
- Yeargh! Here’s Mike Leech’s parking spot on the Texas Tech campus. In case you haven’t noticed, he really like pirates.
- Texas A&M mans up and schedules USC and Oregon starting about 6 years from now. Do they expect to be that good to compete with those juggernauts by then? We’re not even sure Mike Sherman will still be coach by then.
- John Glenn dotted the ‘i’ for Ohio State’s opener Saturday. The former senator then strapped on a jet pack and flew out of the stadium, cackingly laughing and flipping everyone off. Or not.
- A swine flu scare caused Stillman College to forfeit a game Saturday. Is Swine Flu so scary that public events must be canceled? It really is the flu. That’s it. Yes, it’s a new strain, but it’s not going to kill anybody. It may thin out the herd but usually that’s small babies and old people.
- Not only was Oregon dominated by Boise State last Thursday 19-8, but they also took hold of the Thug Torch when LeGarrette Blount threw a punch at Boise State’s Byron Hout. The wings are already clipped for the Oregon Ducks and new head coach successor, Chip Kelly. They might salvage the season but it’s an uphill climb. Oh and Blount is suspended for the rest of the season. But Boise State coach Chris Peterson is not reprimanding Hout for instigating the punch.
- Mired in between the cold cock of the Boise State Bronc, was Oklahoma State’s head coach Mike Gundy’s decision not to do a pre game hand shake before their contest against Georgia. The American Football Coaches Association suggested that every team do it in the name of sportsmanship for the first game of the year. Gundy was afraid of on field fights. It didn’t matter, however, as the Cowboys took care of the Bulldogs on the field over the weekend 24-10.
- ESPN sicked their bloggers on the use of technology and college football nowadays. Brian Bennett talked about video games, Adam Rittenberg writes about a distributed network of clips and playbooks called Hudl Pro, Chris Low talks about laptops with massive amounts of game tape from recruits, Graham Watson talks about timing horns, and Ted Miller talks all things Pac 10 with helmet cams and even Skype. When technology failed Paul Rhoads and the rest of his Iowa State coaching staff last Thursday, they turned to a cell phone contingency plan to ‘call’ plays. Technology ho!
- The big news story of the last week was Heisman winner Sam Bradford leaving the Oklahoma game versus BYU at halftime. He injured his throwing shoulder and people went from unsure to about 4 weeks before he can play again. Also, the Sooners were upset in that game. Bradford’s injury slowed the Sooners down, but they were already being outplayed Saturday night. Mix that in with the news that all American tight end Jermaine Gresham is out for the remainder of the season and Sooners are in big trouble after just one week. Will they bounce back or will they fall even further? Fortunately they have a couple of weeks before a real challenge in Miami. We’ll find out by then if they have regrouped or are still blown to pieces.
