This week’s Pick It results are in and it looks as though some people forgot to set picks again. Including me. It’s a new system but what I missed was actually picking opponents on top of setting the confidence. So I was intrigued on the big rivalry game between Notre Dame and Michigan. “It’s just one game. Surely you didn’t get distracted off of one game, right?” You see, it’s more than just a rivalry. Jolly is a huge Michigan and subsequently a Big 10 fan. I used to hear lots of crap about Big 10 this and winningest program that. Being a Big 12 boy myself as well as a former catholic high school grad, it was necessary for me to take the opposite side this week and root for Notre Dame. I even bought a fitted cap to wear for the game. Well it didn’t pan out as I hoped and missing the picks this week only turns the knife deeper. It’s okay, though, everyone likes an underdog and the Purple Yeti just became one. Heck, it worked out for Rudy. Here’s the results:

Johnny’s Tavern has the Power and the Light
We were very skeptical when we strolled toward the Johnny’s Tavern setup on the corner of the Power & Light District in Downtown Kansas City. We’ve been to a couple of places around there before and the experiences were weak. We had some hope, however, as Johnny’s Tavern came through for us before. After spending the afternoon there we can say it is the best bar in the district. The food was great, the poker game was loads of fun, and the games on the screens were stellar. If you own or work at a bar around that area, read on to see how to make it successful.

GameDay: Quick Thought About Rekindled Rivalries
Perusing the news feeds throughout the week, I couldn’t help but notice the over abundance of items talking about the renewed rivalry of Notre Dame and Michigan. That rivalry is one built with years of contests and traditions. But most of the articles talked about how it was renewed. How? They play each other every year. Is this because Notre Dame is ranked and looking for a BCS run? Usually the shoe is on the other foot with Michigan pushing through the Big 10 and gunning for BCS. So why is it getting so much press this week? It’s very simple. Because college football needs this rivalry.
College football is what it is today because of schools playing each other every year for over 50 years. The tradition of going against a familiar foe and claiming bragging rights for your school is why college football draws the bank that it does. So when Notre Dame and Michigan suit up today for the 37th time, remember that they first played each other in 1887. That’s about 122 years ago. So when they trot on that field today, they carry on their shoulders a history of competition older than Brent Musberger. This is the linchpin of college football.
Of course, we would be remiss to mention that there really isn’t any other big games going on this week. Most rivarly games are played another week. For the ranked teams, the only marquee match up is USC heading to the horse shoe and playing Ohio State. So the pick of teams to talk about this week is pretty weak. Especially because of the big games from last week. There were Top 20 upsets and down to the wire games for BCS contenders last week. This week seems pretty lame comparatively..
But college football needs these two teams. We were lucky enough that it is quiet enough to hear about the Wolverines and the Fighting Irish. For the Wolves, they need to get better fast. The Big 10 needs them to be elite much more than college football. Nowadays, people talk about how weak the Big 10 is. Sure they have Ohio State and sometimes Penn State, but without Michigan and their tradition (the winningest team in history) people will always scoff at the Big 10 and turn their noses at them. As for the Irish, it’s been years since they even mattered. There’s no patience up in South Bend. Just look at Ty Willingham. So the vaunted Charlie Weiss led Notre Dame Fighting Irish need to manufacture a BCS trip or face falling back in mediocrity. It’s been way too long for them. They even set up a cupcake schedule because they know they’ll make it on name alone.
That’s where we are at today. In a couple hours, the whole nation will watch an 18th ranked team travel to an unranked team’s home and play football. Usually in a bigger week with tougher matchups, this game would be overlooked. Usually teams with higher rankings would get the national rub and this one would be pushed to regional action. But this is Notre Dame. This is Michigan. This is a history rich in competition. This is college football. We’re lucky enough to see it.
Pick It and Stick It: Confidently Digging In
Here we go strolling into the second week of picks for the KCCGD crew. Last week saw some impressive (and embarrassing) numbers. With a new confidence system on top of the picks, we’ve found getting used to it somewhat challenging. Nevertheless, this week finds the matchups a little easier to swallow. There aren’t as many ranked teams going against each other. We were treated to an upset or two last week. Will we see it again? We’ll find out over the weekend but until then set your picks and assign confidence to them. Heeeyaw!

Barspotting: Johnny’s Tavern Tries to Save the P&L
This week we’re going back to the Power & Light District and more specifically Johnny’s Tavern. One of the other overly expensive bars there closed downand Johnny’s swooped in to take the torch. Now, we aren’t fans of the P&L, especially for sports, but we want to give Johnny’s Tavern a chance to totally save the day. Johnny’s Tavern is a namesake dedicated to sports bars, especially for the Kansas fans out there. So we’re sure they will make a decent attempt of fielding a proper sports bar Downtown. We’ve been to a different Johnny’s before so we are pretty sure we’re gonna have a good time. See you there.
When: Saturday, September 12 2009
Time: 12:00 pm-ish (we’ll try to make the rivalry)

The second week of college football has calmed down a bit. We needed it too, last weekend was a huge blast off and we need to clean the ash off our faces. This week is not without its sparklers, however. The Cy-Hawk Trophy is up for grabs again in the great Iowa vs Iowa State rivalry. It’s also been a long time since college football was as pumped as it is this year for the Michigan vs Notre Dame game. The only Top 25 meeting is USC vs Ohio State and it should be epic. The rest of the Big 12 looks like mop up work, but don’t be surprised if a few more upsets come that way. We’re looking at you Colorado and Kansas State. Anyway, it should be fun and we hope to see you out this weekend.
For what it’s worth, here’s the result of poll from the Facebook Fan page. Next week’s poll should be up alot earlier next week.
Crib Sheet: Licking Our Wounds
We made it through the first week of college football, but not without some bumps and bruises. Injuries were all over the news in the last week, including the Purple Yeti’s back issue. Fortunately he has a myriad of pills to numb any pain. Oklahoma Sooners fans are probably still numbed from last Saturday’s upset loss. So we will dedicate this week’s Crib Sheet to recovering from any mental and physical injuries. 5 out 7 doctors agree the Crib Sheet has soothing properties. Kick back, relax, and enjoy:
- Yeargh! Here’s Mike Leech’s parking spot on the Texas Tech campus. In case you haven’t noticed, he really like pirates.
- Texas A&M mans up and schedules USC and Oregon starting about 6 years from now. Do they expect to be that good to compete with those juggernauts by then? We’re not even sure Mike Sherman will still be coach by then.
- John Glenn dotted the ‘i’ for Ohio State’s opener Saturday. The former senator then strapped on a jet pack and flew out of the stadium, cackingly laughing and flipping everyone off. Or not.
- A swine flu scare caused Stillman College to forfeit a game Saturday. Is Swine Flu so scary that public events must be canceled? It really is the flu. That’s it. Yes, it’s a new strain, but it’s not going to kill anybody. It may thin out the herd but usually that’s small babies and old people.
- Not only was Oregon dominated by Boise State last Thursday 19-8, but they also took hold of the Thug Torch when LeGarrette Blount threw a punch at Boise State’s Byron Hout. The wings are already clipped for the Oregon Ducks and new head coach successor, Chip Kelly. They might salvage the season but it’s an uphill climb. Oh and Blount is suspended for the rest of the season. But Boise State coach Chris Peterson is not reprimanding Hout for instigating the punch.
- Mired in between the cold cock of the Boise State Bronc, was Oklahoma State’s head coach Mike Gundy’s decision not to do a pre game hand shake before their contest against Georgia. The American Football Coaches Association suggested that every team do it in the name of sportsmanship for the first game of the year. Gundy was afraid of on field fights. It didn’t matter, however, as the Cowboys took care of the Bulldogs on the field over the weekend 24-10.
- ESPN sicked their bloggers on the use of technology and college football nowadays. Brian Bennett talked about video games, Adam Rittenberg writes about a distributed network of clips and playbooks called Hudl Pro, Chris Low talks about laptops with massive amounts of game tape from recruits, Graham Watson talks about timing horns, and Ted Miller talks all things Pac 10 with helmet cams and even Skype. When technology failed Paul Rhoads and the rest of his Iowa State coaching staff last Thursday, they turned to a cell phone contingency plan to ‘call’ plays. Technology ho!
- The big news story of the last week was Heisman winner Sam Bradford leaving the Oklahoma game versus BYU at halftime. He injured his throwing shoulder and people went from unsure to about 4 weeks before he can play again. Also, the Sooners were upset in that game. Bradford’s injury slowed the Sooners down, but they were already being outplayed Saturday night. Mix that in with the news that all American tight end Jermaine Gresham is out for the remainder of the season and Sooners are in big trouble after just one week. Will they bounce back or will they fall even further? Fortunately they have a couple of weeks before a real challenge in Miami. We’ll find out by then if they have regrouped or are still blown to pieces.
Pick It Standings Week 1: We’ve Only Just Begun
The first week of the college football playoffs let to some already high drama. Some teams showed up, others didn’t. Even an old rivalry was rekindled last night with the exciting finish to the Florida State and Miami game. Much of what is great about football is that at any moment during the whole weekend we can bear witness to some great game moments. What amplifies it more is when you have some sort of stake in each game. Usually that’s left for sports gambling. For us, we do the open Pick It and Stick It. The first week is in and needless to say, the real life drama reflects itself in the picks.

Tanner’s Helps Us Kickoff the Year Right
Hey Hey, My My, College football will never die. And neither will KC College GameDay. We’re back again for another year for fantastic football watchin’ and we kicked off the Labor Day weekend full of football at Tanner’s Bar & Grill in the the Waldo district. There are many a Tanner’s in the KC area (as well as some out of area locations) and they have always been known to be a top notch sporting experience. This location, proved to be right there, even though some trip ups in service and specials hurt it a bit. We also get to go over a new game for you arcadians out there. But there’s much, much more.
GameDay: Follow Us on Twitter
We’re getting all cleaned up and strapped up here at KCCGD headquarters and we’d figure we’d drop a quick game day note. As you may have noticed, we are upgrading things around here, one of them being our Twitter integration. If you aren’t familiar with Twitter, it’s basically a mini broadcasting site that lets you say random, tiny things to people who want to hear it. Pick It and Stick It: Flicking Off A New Year
Welcome to the first Pick It and Stick It for the 2009 college football season! We are mixing things up this year and introducing confidence points for the picks. Last year, we had fun doing it by the spread but the competition was way apart (as in Purple Yeti). So now we are upping the ante a bit and making everyone assign confidence points. What does that mean? It means that you win the points you set for when you choose a winner of a match up.

Barspotting: We Almost Forgot About Tanner’s
This is a little embarrassing. We’re getting all hyped up for another great year of college football and stumbled a bit in our preparation. You see, we naturally assumed that in the last two years of this fine and dandy operation that we actually had a barspot at a Tanner’s Bar & Grill location. This is not true. So to make up for it, we are kicking off our 3rd season by hanging out in one of the storied sports bar traditions for the Kansas City Area. Join us at the Waldo district to kick the season off in style and welcome to another year of KC College Gameday!

Crib Sheet: Going Prime Time
Hey guess what? The Crib Sheet is BACK for the regular season. We enjoyed digging up some tasty news nuggest during the offseason so much that we are going to roll it into the regular season rotation. That’s great news alone. So for those of you not familiar with the format, let us explain what the Crib Sheet is all about: We scour the interwebs for stories not hears too well and stories that are local to the Kansas City area, adding our unique twist on it. So rejoice in its return and enjoy this week’s Crib Sheet:
- Indiana is cashing in big time by giving up a home game in 2010 and playing Penn State at FedEx Field, home of the NFL Washington Redskins. It looks like this trend is here to stay with college teams playing in pro football (and baseball) stadiums. I guess it will work out for schools that get major payouts, $3 million for Indiana, but it still sucks that hometown fans have to travel or miss out on games.
- Tennessee running back Bryce Brown is cleared of any NCAA violations for questions in his recruiting process. Now he can focus on becoming yet another highly touted athlete with a dark, questionable past. Sometimes the news just writes itself.
- John Malkovic: Actor chimes in on the upcoming college football season. He doesn’t say anything too outrageous and we’re glad to see that hoity toity actors can enjoy the grid iron as well. We’re not so sure, however, how coaches turned actors will fare. Yikes!
- So, everything is big in the new Cowboys stadium. Check. Tons of college football teams are playing there as well. Check. The Oklahoma vs BYU game is sold out. Check. $25 for outside concourse access only. WHAT? We get that the mega stadium will draw mega bucks, but when you’re not even in the dang stadium, you shouldn’t have to drop that chunk of change just to be there.
- Mike Gundy’s blackout to prepare for Georgia led to an arrest for one player and another leaving the team. Doh! It looks as though locking things down loosened up the team a bit. Will they get it together before their big opener? Tune in this weekend.
- St. Paul, a division II school, canceled its season opener because they don’t have helmets or pads. WHAT? It’s not that they couldn’t afford it, but the numnuts who ordered waited a little bit too late. They should put that guy in a tackling dummy and let the team try out the new gear on him.
- Blaine Gabbert locked up the starting job at Missouri. Now the fight for number 2 just got easier. The other Blaine, Blaine Dalton, was booted off the team for a DUI arrest. That’s alright, though, as it sounds like the Tiger’s focus this year may be more running intensive.
- The Alamo Bowl replaced the Big 10 opponent in favor of a Pac 10 number 2. That should heat up the competition for the Big 12 and give more legitimacy as big time conferences for both parties involved.
- Apparently Jim Harbaugh, with help from a booster, now has a $50-$70k toilet to do his business in at Stanford. So I guess when their season goes into the crapper, at least it will be comfortable and plush.
- Bill Snyder 2.0 named Carson Coffman as his starter going into the opener for the Kansas State Wildcats. Competition is a good thing, but he’s being consistent on this one. If anything, Snyder 2.0 is known to switch things up and play people in rotations. Grant Gregory, you still have a shot.
- Rich Rodriguez is taking it from all sides these days. We find out that current and former players are complaining about working too many hours for the football team, even though everyone does it and they he has an ally in Ohio State Buckeye players. An investigation is coming to get to the bottom of a rule no one follows. Now we hear him getting sued in a failed deal for land development in Virginia. Notice that the piece came from the Ann Arbor news website. Seriously, wait until half the season is over when they are looking to finish the same way they did last year. By then RichRod won’t be able to fight back the tears.
Spit Ball Predictions for 2009
We can take a couple of more days to draw up a preview of each conference and then roll the dice on how the bowls will shore up but that would take way too much time and reach far out of our happy little niche. So what we are going to do instead is spit up some predictions for what’s going to happen this year in college football. We may talk about your favorite conference, we may not. Chances are we’ll predict the title winner, but we may over look the Outland Trophy Award winner. Who knows? We’re loading up our straws (or empty pens) and seeing what sticks to the wall for 2009.
Big 12 Preview 2009
Most folks outside of the midwest believe that the Big 12 Conference is 2nd nationally amongst conferences in terms of football strength. Much of the talk points toward the Big 12 South. As we roll into the 2009 season, we find some teams reloaded, some teams are out of ammo, and the rest either misfired or are shooting blanks. We’re gonna see where they all stack up and how they will finish in 2009, according the Purple Yeti’s crystal ball. There are some shifts in power, but the top stack will stay the same and most of the close calls will still be close. Hopefully the crystal ball pulls through.
Kansas State Wildcats Football 2009 Preview: More Like Mildcats
The year of Kansas State wasn’t so much of a year as it was an eternity. There were mediocre hopes going into the season, despair running through the season, mania during the end of the season and into the offseason, then back to a numbed out mediocre hope of building a solid team. There are still burn marks on my belly from the selt belt holding me in from the ride the Wildcats took me on in the last year. Right now, they are known as the Mildcats. They brought back an old legend to patch up the nuclear meltdown and now are looking to rebuild. Let’s take a look and see how they will stack up coming into the 2009 season.
