Stadiumspotting (And So Much More) At McLane Stadium In Waco

img_2149

I kinda feel like everything I did on this blog led up to the weekend I had last weekend.  From grilling to barhopping to going to a game, last weekend had everything I wised for.  Except a win.  Yup, I was in Waco for the sorta Big 12 Championship when Kansas State played Baylor. Holiday Wishes from the KCCGD Crew

Happy Holidays everybody from the KC College Gameday Crew!  It’s been a couple of years now of doing this blog and we’ve learned alot along the way.  We also are very thankful for all 12 of you that actually read this internet football rag.  It’s not a perfect blog and we strive hard everyday just to make it a little bit better.  We wished it could be perfect, but sometimes great things come from imperfections.   Much along those same lines, we have Christmas wishes we want to share with you this holiday season:

Scoreboards Sent Us Home Alive but Hurting

We did our best to avoid the blast impact of Farmegeddon 2009 and with your help we landed in the bunker that is Scoreboards Bar vs Grille. Scoreboards tucked us away very quietly while we watched the action exploding on the screens. In times of catastrophe, one can’t be concerned of amenities. They must be concerned for survival. Well, we survived Scoreboards. From patching together tvs, to working with outdated accommodations, we walked out of disaster with no scratches and sore backs. Hey at least the food exceeded our expectations of canned beans and cracker jacks.

J. Murphy’s Brings Out the Irish in Every One

Western Europe meets the western Kansas City area as we trucked way the heck out to Shawnee to view Saturday’s selections at J. Murphy’s Irish Pub and Grille.  The games lined up for the afternoon seemed like a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.  The traditional fare sprinkled the joint so well we were waiting for a Contra Dance to bust out.  And the food, well the food was all it was cracked up to be, Irish wise.  But there was so much more than really cheesy Irish references (which we will stop as of now) at J. Murphy’s.

It’s not Atlanta, but We’re Doing the Dirty Birdie’s

Some weeks, you don’t know what you’re going to run into when you pick a place you’ve never been to before.  So when we strolled up to Birdie’s Pub and Grill,  we weren’t expecting much.  They didn’t have a website and the only information we got about the place was on Google Maps.   Walking in, however, things turned completely different.  Yes, it was bigger, but for some aspects it wasn’t necessarily better.  The goal of the week was to watch some Nebraska vs Virginia Tech and head to a BBQ.  We accomplished the mission.  Here’s the report.

Johnny’s Tavern has the Power and the Light

We were very skeptical when we strolled toward the Johnny’s Tavern setup on the corner of the Power & Light District in Downtown Kansas City.  We’ve been to a couple of places around there before and the experiences were weak.  We had some hope, however, as Johnny’s Tavern came through for us before.  After spending the afternoon there we can say it is the best bar in the district.  The food was great, the poker game was loads of fun, and the games on the screens were stellar.   If you own or work at a bar around that area, read on to see how to make it successful.

Tanner’s Helps Us Kickoff the Year Right

Hey Hey, My My, College football will never die.  And neither will KC College GameDay.  We’re back again for another year for fantastic football watchin’ and we kicked off the Labor Day weekend full of football at Tanner’s Bar & Grill in the the Waldo district.  There are many a Tanner’s in the KC area (as well as some out of area locations) and they have always been known to be a top notch sporting experience. This location, proved to be right there, even though some trip ups in service and specials hurt it a bit.  We also get to go over a new game for you arcadians out there.  But there’s much, much more.

Gators Chomp on Sooners and The PurpleYeti Chomps on Bar Food

Congratulations go out to the Florida Gators as your BCS Champion! I’m a little bummed out because this Yeti was going for Oklahoma Sooners. It could have been worse. The game could have been a complete blowout. At least the Sooners kept the game close until the last couple minutes of the game. Also, congratulations go out to Wharfrats for picking smartly and going against the Sooners for the Bowl Pick ‘Em title. It was a let down Thursday night, but JJ’s Other Place kept me warm.

BCS Title Game Makes Me Race To JJ’s Other Place

BCS Title Logo

To quote Keith Jackson, “WHOA NELLY!”  What a game Monday night!  Apparently a month of planning from Coach Tressel can help the Ohio State Buckeyes make a game against the Texas Longhorns.  The McCoy/Crosby connection toward the end of the game reminded me of the Harrell/Crabtree connection made from Texas Tech earlier this year.  The Longhorns eeked out of the Fiesta Bowl with a win and the Ohio State Buckeyes go home a BCS bust (again).

The Fools Stayed at the Granfalloon

The last regular season barspot brought us to the Granfalloon.  The Big 12 Championship game pitted Missouri versus Oklahoma and we wanted to celebrate the pagentry with the lights of the Plaza.  It was a cold evening and traffic was a holiday shopping nightmare, but we braved the conditions and made our way in.  It would take a Christmas miracle for Missouri to win and we felt the mojo would be had at the Granfalloon.

Barspotting: Making a Grand Fool of Ourselves at the Granfalloon

The Granfalloon

This week, we’re making a quick pit stop the Granfalloon.  The only memories I remember of this place is being a crowded multi room bar.  After further inspection on their website, it seems like they have a pretty good amount of HD flat screens for barspotting.  So why not give it a shot.  The Big 12 Championship is at 7pm so hopefully we squeeze on in there.  This is the last barspot before bowl season, so we hope it’s a good one.

When: Saturday, December 6th 2008
Where: The Granfalloon608 Ward Pkwy Kansas City, MO 64112
Time: 7:00 PM – for the only real game of the weekend

Holiday Football at Skybox Left Us Wanting Seconds

Riding back in the car Sunday, while it shuffled through the snow sprinkling down in the Ozarks Sunday, I started going over just what kind of weekend I experienced.  It was food filled, family and friends filled, and just enough football filled.  We saw a true Border War this weekend and we were thankful for a great time.  But before I jump on the recovery treadmill, let’s do a flyby of Skybox.

Barspotting: Springfield! Springfield! It’s a Helluva Town!

Small Time Jaywalkers for Big Time Fun

Another week of football and there wasn’t much to choose from Top 25 wise.  At least rivalry week kept the competitive juices flowing.  And per the Yeti’s lady’s suggestion, we were letting the juices flow at Jaywalkers.  It was an all day affair with a college like air, and we took full advantage of all they had to offer.  What hoped to be a great day of football turned into a great day of hanging out at the bar.

Barspotting: Chanches are We Won’t get Ticketed at Jaywalker’s

Jaywalker’s Sports Bar & Grill

Jaywalkers just happens to be a Kansas University bar.  No really.  So what better time of the year to hit up the place then when the Jayhawks have the week off?  As noted before, we love irony here at the KCCGD and we are game to keep in motion.  Their website says they are the best Big 12 sports bar in KC and we’re gonna put that to the test.  Who knows?  Maybe they will prove to be numero uno.  There’s one thing for sure, the Purple Yeti is eyeballin’ that big ole Sweet 16 burger.
When: Saturday, November 22, 2008
Where: Jaywalker’s Sports Bar & Grill –  3916 Rainbow Blvd, Kansas City, KS 66103
Time: 11 AM Sharp – There’s some huge rivalries going on
