GameDay: Head Games

With the Eric LeGrand injury as well as the big fines being dropped in the NFL, I figured I would take some time to talk about violence and football.  Ever since I was a kid, the mantra of football has been to hit the other guy harder than you.  Not only does it provide a physical advantage, but also a mental one.  With the way things are going, the physical part of the game will go away.  I don’t think the sport will be the same.

I played little league football and I was pretty good.  No, I wasn’t quarterback, but I was big enough as a lil ‘un to plug up holes and do a decent job of blocking.  The best coach I ever had was from little league and he always said to hit the guy harder than you.  That’s the battle on the line of scrimmage.  If you push, you will win.  That’s the way it’s always been.  Once the other team knows that, it starts to wear them down emotionally.  It’s the spirit of the competition.

In high school, I moved up to varsity during my sophomore year and eventually started both ways a year later.  Hey, I got real big.  There are two moments I remember.  The first one was hitting a guy so hard in practice that he bounced a yard back from me and quit the team the next week.  The other one was in a game.  It was 4th and goal, the run was coming my way, and I was looking right across to the guy I had to block.  Before the snap, I knew instantly that I was gonna blow the guy up.  I did and we scored.  There is no better feeling on the field when you beat the other guy that way.

The last couple of weeks once again shone the light on just how violent football is as a sport.  In terms of collisions, it’s right up there with boxing and maybe MMA.  I knew that going into little league, I knew it in high school, and I know it today.  I’m okay with it, too.  The risk was there from the beginning and will still be there in the end.  That’s why the latest rounds of attention doesn’t mean much.

Every couple of years, a football player gets hit the wrong way and ends up paralyzed.  What usually follows is about a month of attention from the media and the sports media about how football is too violent.  After about a month, the attention goes away.  Even with the science of concussions and hits maturing into a full study,  I can tell you that we won’t remember it a month from now.

Both sides are filling the airwaves with crap and the quicker it goes away the better.  On one side, you have people who’ve never played football talk about how the sport should be banned.  There may be an actually ex-footballer in they’re talking about how serious a hit can be.  The rule of thumb with those guys is that the more mainstream the show, the more they abhor the violence.  I’ve heard on TV how terrible it is and I’ve heard on podcasts how it’s just the flavor of the week.

The other side of the talk are employed football players.  You’ll see some guys say sorry, but you’ll see other guys talk about how they don’t know how to do it differently.  James Harrison even said he might retire because of the recent changes.  With football players, you’ll hear about how they don’t want to change and how it will turn into Arena football if they make more big hit changes.  While rule changes may tilt things that way, it won’t fundamentally change football.  It’s just a matter of two sides claiming the extreme until people get tired of it.

So when you go out and read about how concussions kill or that they are putting on a pink dress, since there are already pink gloves, on football.  Just sit back, relax, and take a breath.  Football isn’t going to change for the worse and no one is going to die on the field.  The only time to really be worried if there ends up being enough push to ban football. Even then, it’s alright because there’s always MMA.  We are wired to enjoy violence without killing anyone and we’ll get our fix eventually.

Pick It and Stick It: Wiping Away the Pretenders

The BCS Standings are out and it’s time to start wiping away the competition.  Oklahoma and Missouri will lock horns tomorrow to find out who will be worthy from the Big 12.  We also have LSU battling Auburn for SEC worthiness.  The pretenders are wiping away and it’s all downhill for the road to the BCS Championship Game.  The pretenders will also start wiping away in our Pick It and Stick It challenge.  Let’s take a look at what’s on the windshield for this week.

Stadiumspotting: Lawrence Bekons Again!

You’d figure I would be done with road trips, but thanks to the love of my life and her blue and red colored company, I’m heading out yet again for another round of Stadiumspotting. This time again it’s in Lawrence and I will bear witness to another two teams looking to rebound from losses. Last week it was Kansas in that very stadium that took a beat down from Kansas State. They will host Texas A&M, who were pummelled to pieces by a tough Missouri team. More than likely the Aggies will beat up the deflated Jayhawks on their homecoming but the last time that was said the Jayhawks upset a ranked team. You just never know.

Crib Sheet: My Head Hurts

It looks as though the NFL cracked down on concussions and big time hits, doling out suspensions for head on collisions now.   What does this mean for college football?  Probably the same type of suspension.  I’m not sure they will completely lock down like they do in the NFL.  I’m guessing that this sport may be going away in the next 15 years, or at least it will turn into more of an arena style of play.  Even for the colleges.  Now check out the Crib Sheet:

Pick It Standings Week 07: The BCS Has Arrived

It’s that time of the year people!  No, not when we break our backs raking leaves, but the time when the BCS Stadings start coming out!  For those of you that follow the blog religiously know that we like to take some time out of the heated Pick It and Stick It Standings to go over the BCS fight as well.  We’re in week 7 of the picks and there’s a large gap between #2 and #3.  Will it grow or shrink in the weeks to come?  Meanwhile, the first BCS Standings show that computers are way smarter than people and they also like surprises too.

Sunflower Showdown Didn’t Slow Down the Wildcats

This is another Monday where I get to talk about a game I saw on Thursday night.  Last time was in Manhattan and this time it was in Lawrence.  Things could not have turned around on a hard 180 degree twist for the Kansas State Wildcats.  For the Kansas Jayhawks, unfortunately, things remained the same.  I didn’t get a chance to take in the Lawrence like I did Manhattan, but the town and the game was great none the less.  For a quick road trip in and out of Memorial Stadium, I can say that the memories will last a long time.

GameDay: About Storming the Field

While I was chilling out at Memorial Stadium Thursday night, I couldn’t help but think for a moment about the Colorado fans storming the field against Georgia a couple of weeks ago.  Kansas State was well on its way to a victory and not once did you see any fans for the Wildcats try to storm the field.  It seems nowadays, however, that storming the field is the easy thing to do after a victory.  I want to take this time to talk to every student, fan, or objective observer.  Stop storming the fields.  Just stop it.

Pick It and Stick It: Letting It Run Down

Another Friday and another day after for me and some Stadiumspotting.   Last week didn’t go to well for me but this week was the complete opposite.  The college football season is full of ups and downs and it can change every week.  With this weekend, we will be about halfway through the football season.  The time is running down for more great games and for even more great picks.  The field’s thinning at the top and the clock is starting to run down.  Let’s go over this week’s Pick It and Stick It to see how the downs can turn into ups:

Stadiumspotting: Thursday Night Lights Part II, Lawrence Edition

We said we had one more trip left in us and I was wrong.  We have at least two!  So tonight starts another familiar trip out west to Stadiumspot.  We’re not going all the way to Manhattan, however.  We are heading to Lawrence to watch the Sunflower Showdown.  Kansas comes off a beating from the Baylor Bears of all teams while Kansas State said goodbye to Nebraska by getting their asses kicked.  Both teams need a win and there’s nothing like notching a rivalry win to pick things up.  I don’t know who’s going to win this one but I hope that it will at least be competitive.

Pick It Standings Week 06: Part Design Part Luck

This week’s standings are in and we are still figuring out just how to work the angles.  Starting out, it made sense that we made the picks a little more hardcore.  Picking just one team over the other seemed way to simple to the kind of fans that lurk around these parts.  Oh, we’re glad we set it up the way we did, but we sure are reminded today that we can’t fall asleep at the wheel.  The weekly picks by design are supposed to affect the overall but it doesn’t seem that way.  Much like Les Miles crazy fake field goal that eventually put LSU over Florida.  Pick It and Stick is part design, part luck.

The Send Off Was Beat Down at Bill Snyder Family Stadium

The drive down to Manhattan last Thursday was fairly quick.  The more than likely last ever game between Kansas State and Nebraska took place and it was not all I hoped to be.  But the electricity from the radio on through the fans as well as the pageantry leading up to the game made the trip more than worthwhile.  There’s nothing like revisiting your old stomping grounds and enjoying everything great about what it was like to be there.  The whole day fittingly ended Nebraska’s presence in Wildcat Country.

GameDay: Road Trippin’

I’ve been on a ton of road trips the last couple of weeks.  Wichita, Des Moines, Minneapolis, and Manhattan all were recorded in the log book.  I’ve noticed some things on the road and want to share it with you.  From what to eat to how to beat the casino, these tips will help you get more out of your college football road trip.  I’ve heard of people road tripping every week for football and dismissed them as being crazy.   The last month’s events just made me a little crazy for the road.

Pick It and Stick It: The Mourning After

The big game last night didn’t end up so well for this Kansas State fan. Hey, that’s okay. We tooled to Aggiveille and hit up the Hibachi Hit, which later lead to the vaunted Hibachi Butt. Maybe it was the mixture of great cajun food and the Carbomb we had at O’Malley’s Alley. Who knows? But it was great to see the old stomping grounds, even though the Wildcats were run over by Taylor Martinez and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. More on that with Monday’s post. Until then, we have some picks for the weekend we need to go through. The healing process begins with pickens.

Stadiumspotting: Thursday Night Lights

This will be the first off day stadiumspotting for us and we’re super excited.  Kansas State hosts Nebraska for probably the last time ever and they are both undefeated.  The electricity will be huge in the Little Apple and we will be there to cover it.  Chances are we will make our way back to a bar Saturday but we’ll go ahead and tweet the location when we decided where.  Until then, it’s half day action at work then a split time of driving and football watching.  This Purple Yeti is more than pumped for the biggest game of the year for the Wildcats.
