Yeah I’m not sure if Bob Bowlsby (new Big 12 Commish) had anything to do with what happened in the last week, but I’m giving him credit. Not in the video, just in this note about the video. I was too busy gushing about the new bowl series matchup between the Big 12 and the SEC, Florida State’s (and Clemson’s) apparent move to the Big 12, Notre Dame courting, the ACC and other weak conferences like the Big East, and realignment swankiness. It’s good to be a Big 12 fan this week. Continue reading Purple Yeti Roar 18: Bigger and Better Bowls(by) →
Yes, this week I get a little wet, with emotion. And by wet, I mean sweat. Sweat for all of the realignment rumblings that involve the Big 12 and teams going _into_ the conference. I’ll talk about some of the teams that fall in to that latter category as well as some Texas, South Carolina, Notre Dame, Bill Byrne, West Virginia, Aaron Green, and Dan Beebe. Continue reading Purple Yeti Roar 17: Getting Ready To Rain Down →
The Royals tanked hard in Kansas City, so why not hang out with me as we get ready for some football? Sure, it’s all talk and no play but better no play than terrible play. This week I talk Arkansas, Kansas, Charlie Weiss, Notre Dame, Ireland, Navy, Jessica Dorrell, Bobby Petrino, USC, ESPN, Oregon, Tha tweed, Texas A&M, SEC, West Virginia, Gary Pinkel, and Missouri. Last week it was reported that West Virginia was going to Big 12, and now it is official. There was some late swinging by Louisville to take their place but in the end West Virginia won out. I guess when politicians get involved, it can turn ugly. Louisville isn’t out the race yet. When the Big 12 looks to expand here in a couple of years, they will be next on the list. The next best thing to politicing is lawyering (he says sarcastically). West Virginia won the former and is now pushing the latter by suing the Big East on the grounds that the conference and their commissioner is crappy. I say they have a case. On to the Crib Sheet:

It’s Halloween weekend (-ish, it’s on Monday) and the weather is finally starting to reflect that down here in Austin. I have to get used to it being hot rolling into late October. This weekend has a big ole cold front blowing through and I’m already feeling the chills. That’s the sign on fall that I need and it fits right in the super creepy Halloween theme. The action of the field and on the Pick It and Stick It is still smoking hot. Keltron3000 is breaking away from the pack but others are hot on her heels. Kansas State is up for the game of their lives, well more like the game of the year, as they host Oklahoma. So grab some Candy Corn and let’s check out the picks: Continue reading PIck It and Stick It 2011 Week 09: This Is Giving Me Chills →
It’s high time to duke it out on the field for dominance on the college football landscape. The unbeatens will dwindle down here real soon, if not this weekend, and it’s everyone team for themselves. Please remember, however, by fighting I mean actually playing tough football. I do not mean actually fighting the opposing players. It seems in the last couple of weeks some players have been confused and took to fisticuffs. Heck 41 players are suspended because of a big brawl that happened last weekend. Please, when you go out there fight well in terms of football, not Mortal Kombat. Now, it’s time to go over the Pick It and Stick It and look for some fatalities. Finish Him!

We may be seeing the search for Missouri end real quick. We also may see the search for the Big 12 heat right up. The Tigers are planning on leaving for the SEC and we may know about it here by tomorrow. Alot of people, including myself, thought that they would wait unilt the end of the season to get the ball rolling but apparently they want to move fast. So in the middle of the football season, we will see even more conference realignment. I’m just going to avert my eyes from the pain and check out this week’s Crib Sheet:

I have to say I’m a little giddy at the news that TCU will be accepting the offer to join the Big 12. Yeah, I know that they turned the gravy train around from the Big East but they are a better fit and I’m sure they were a little shakey about that conference after Pitt and Syracuse decided to leave. Yes, the Big East is in HUGE trouble, and now it’s the Big 12’s turn to take a deep breath and grab a couple of more teams. In fact, I’d say it’s high time for the Big 12 to Pick It and Stick It! Speaking of which, we have another exciting weekend of action on the field and on your pick sets. Let’s go over the list:

Conference play kind of opened up last weekend for the Big 12, but this weekend we have a couple of head to head match ups. I don’t know which game will be more exciting, the Texas vs Iowa State or Kansas State vs Baylor. The obvious is the Kansas State game but if you remember last year, Iowa State went down to Austin and beat the Longhorns. The local media around here is chirping about how it’s a revenge game but the player interviews talk about how they expect to handle Iowa State easily. We’ll find that out Saturday as well as just how real Kansas State’s defense really is. Here’s this week’s Pick It and Stick It: Continue reading Pick It and Stick It 2011 Week 05: Time To Play For Real →
Another week of barspotting and I’m going for the trifecta. It’s been 2 great weeks of college football watching and I need one more joint to make me believe that Austin is serious about sports bars. The last two weeks were easy because it was close to downtown. Now it’s time to throw Austin for a loop and go for that ‘remote neighborhood family bar’ joint. Well, I’ve found down south in the Backspin Sports Bar & Grill. Saturday I’ll find out if the remote locations of Austin bring the game like the places closer to the heart of the city do.

So the deed is finally done. Texas A&M and the SEC made it official. Now last week, we found out that the Big 12 was staying together. We also found out that Dan Beebe resigned, at the request of Oklahoma and some others. Connected sports guy Chuck Neinas was setup as the interim Big 12 Commissioner. What else? The 1st and 2nd tier television rights are on the table. That’s fine for Texas because the LHN is 3rd tier, noinch! The athletic directors all met and were saying they are committed to keeping the Big 12 alive. Although, it seems Missouri’s foot is still out of the door. Worse yet, the reason Oklahoma wanted the Big 12 to stay alive was because they couldn’t swing a deal with the Pac 12. So is it safe? I guess it is for now. I’ll be certain of it when somebody actually joins the conference instead of leaves it. Until then, here’s another installment of the Crib Sheet: Continue reading Crib Sheet: Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself →
In case you’ve been stuck under a table somewhere, the whole college football landscape is changing right under our noses. For whatever school, big or large, it’s getting real close to the time where you pick it or lose it. But before that time comes, we need to go over the Pick It standings for week numero tres. There isn’t anything as shocking or surprising like the Pitt and Syracuse move to the ACC, but after this week it will start to get fairly exciting. Let’s check out the standings: Continue reading Pick It Standings Week 03: Pick Alignment →
It’s the hustle and bustle of college football. At the beginning of the year, everyone is tied 0-0. Slowly and weekly, the winners bubble up and the losers peter out. We’re getting into week 3 and it’s still crowded. We haven’t yet hit the real bubbling point. Apparently it’s Road Test Weekend so we’ll more than likely get the cauldron cooking real quick. Speaking of being crowded, I’m planning and surfing the flesh at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Granted I have Sunday tickets so it won’t be too bad, but Saturday’s at Third Base Sports Bar. Let’s hope people don’t bubble up vomit and I don’t peter out.

Media days are about done and that means practices are right around the corner. I’m almost ready to ring the cowbell for a new season. In the meantime, here’s this week’s Crib Sheet:

You know it’s fun to dress up when you’re a mascot. Most of the time, all you have to do is zip up costume, toss on some shoulder pads, and drop a big ole furry head on your shoulders. That’s tons of fun, but to me, slapping on some warpaint and gigging up to look like a warrior is way better. That’s why I’m pumped to talk about The Aztec Warrior and San Diego State. It seems fluffy characters outweigh the human ones so when I get a chance to review one that sports weapons, I get super psyched.
