Bowl Pick It and Stick It: The Bowl Nine Yards

Here we are in the middle of bowl season.  I got some good gear for Xmas and I hope you got some too.  The bowl action was light in the last week, but we are now ramping up into the  meat of the schedule.  Most of the Big 12 schools will be playing this week and  there will be ample action in between.  Meanwhile, I Bowl Pick It and Stick It standings are out are some peeps jumping out of the gate quick.  Let’s look at that first:

Bowl Pick It and Stick It: Bowlnanza!

Here’s the first standings update for the Bowl Pick It and Stick It.  This time we’re mixing it up a bit and going for straight picks only.  Most of the time the match-ups in bowls are pretty even so it’s a gimmie on who will actually win the game.  I also beat up on people in the regular season with the confidence points addition.  We’ve had 3 games already so the pack is pretty tight.  The main course starts tonight so I’ll run down the games and blab about them as I see fit.  First, let’s go over the standings:

Barspotting: Championship Saturday At Lew’s Grill & Bar

Every year we go back to the best bar of the year and this time around it’s Lew’s Grill & Bar.  It’s a solid performer that doesn’t let us down in terms of big game watching.   Sure it’s small for its size, but it packs a punch in terms of factors for a great place to watch sports.  So we’ll try one last time to get Das Boot and watch the SEC Championship Game as well as the Civil War.   What, no Big 12 Championship Game?  Welp, I will be at a company holiday party while it’s going on and for this weekend, an open bar trumps a title game with Nebraska in it.

Crib Sheet: Working Hard to Play this Weekend

We are knee-deep in some serious day job related stuff but fortunately we build the Crib Sheet piece by piece, day by day.  Here ya go:

  • Much of the details of last week’s agreement between the Big 12 and outgoing schools Nebraska and Colorado came out.  Dan Beebe talked about why Nebraska has to pay $9 million and Colorado has to pay $6 million.  Also, don’t look for expansion anytime soon.   They haven’t decided on how to divvy out the cash, but chances are it will be the same formula used for the revenue sharing in general.
  • Irish eyes will be smiling when Notre Dame will play Navy in Ireland 2012.  We’re not sure where they will play but more than likely there’s a good chance they’ll all go out together after the game and get drunk.
  • In preparation for last week’s game against Boise State, Oregon State coaches had their practice field painted blue.  That’s some great thinking there.  It’s almost like using loud speakers to emulate crowd noise except messier.
  • Communication issues have tormented Turner Gill and the Kansas Jayhawks.  His solution?  Yanking cell phones from players the day before the game and then giving it back in the locker room after the game.  How will the players wake up in the morning or talk to their mothers?  I guess that’s what computers are for.  We wonder how many more losses it will take for Gill to yank computer privileges too.
  • The NCAA leaped to action regarding the issue of sports agents and collegiate players by writing a letter.  A letter.  They asked for cooperation.  Nothing else.  Just another reason the NCAA needs to upgrayedd or just disband.  These guys are getting real irrelevant.
  • The Playoff PAC, the special interest group formed to blow away the BCS and instill a college football playoff, will file a complaint with the IRS regarding the tax status of the Fiesta, Sugar, and Orange Bowl.  They used a load of lawyers and one accountant to pick apart the tax returns and public documents of the BCS bowls and found that some loans and director salaries were just too much.  Whether the IRS will remove the tax status, we won’t know.  But we do know that the Playoff PAC is digging into every crook and cranny to blow away the BCS.
  • Meanwhile, the PAC 10 is thinking about having their title game in Las Vegas.  Okay that’s a little crazy as there is no team in the Pac 10 from Nevada.  It is centrally located, but they need to have it in California.
  • Texas is signing up another (somewhat) tough opponent in Maryland  for the 2017 and 2018 season.  Will this be the game on the Longhorns Network?
  • Because of past troubles, USC will be barred from playing the Pac 10 Championship Game in 2012, if they are good enough to get there.  Bide your time Trojan fans.  Once Lane Kiffin blows up your program and you rebuild, you’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of the title game.
  • It seems Landry Jones of Oklahoma will have a higher calling after he is done calling plays.  Jones says he’s 98% sure that he wants to become a pastor after football.  Just goes to show you all walks of life come to play football.  We wonder how many Hail Marys he’s tossed compared how many he’s recited.
  • He’s just hanging with Tim Brewster.  He’s not going for the head coaching job.  That’s what Minnesota is saying after Mark Mangino was spotted on the sidelines of a game, supporting his buddy.  Minnesota should’ve gotten right out in front of this.  There is no way no one would not recognize Mark Mangino hanging out on the sidelines.  The nose bleeder seats would’ve been able to see him.
  • Apparently along with the no cell phone rule for players, Turner Gill’s Kansas Jayhawks can’t be with the ladies after 10 pm.  That’s a harsh rule.  It’s on any night.  Do mothers count?  Like as in visit and talk to.  Keep your mind out of the gutters, people.
  • Nick Saban said his Alabama team should be set to face Michigan in the Jerry Jones Super Mega Cowboys Stadium Dome in 2012.  It sounds like more college games will be played there than pro games.  It’s good for Dallas we suppose.
  • Looks like Kansas backup, and former starter, Kale Pick will be out a couple of weeks with a leg injury.  Not sure if he will ever see a snap again.
  • Bill Snyder 2.0 is starting to look alot like the first version.  The Wildcats snagged a top ranked junior college quarterback Justin Tuggle from Blinn, much like another former one by the name of Michael Bishop.  This looks to be the next year.
  • The NHL’s Stanley Cup showed up at the Notre Dame game last week.  It will be awhile before the Fighting Irish will see another title of any kind down in South Bend.
  • Strange things are afoot for Missouri.  First off, cornerback Munir Prince left the team due to the transient quadriplegia he suffered in the preseason.  If he plays anymore it could get permanent.  Next up, senior safety Jasper Simmons has been suspended indefinitely from the team.  He had knee surgery after the Illinois game.  Are they just trying to drop a scholarship or something?  At any rate, some very unusual things are going down in Columbia.

Barspotting: Johnny’s On the Spot Again

We are back again going out to the best of what Kansas City sports bars has to offer in terms of college football.  Like the storied tradition of college football, we have a tradition of going back to the best bar of last year to start out this season for KC College Gameday.  We had no way of knowing back at the beginning of last September that Johnny’s in the Power & Light would be the best but here we are planning the first Barspot of the year down there.  With every television fit into every nook and cranny as well as the crazy touch table poker game, Johnny’s hit the spot on all things needed for a great sport viewing experience.  So come back out with us Saturday as we head back out there to enjoy Johnny’s and scoff at that ridiculous KC College Live thingy going on in the outdoor area.

Mascot Monday: Bill the Goat

It’s another Mascot Monday, but more importantly it’s another Memorial Day here at the KCCGD.  Last year we took a look at Army’s mascots, but this year it’s the Navy’s turn.  So why is a goat, Bill to be specific, the mascot for the Midshipmen?  We’ll find that out as well as look at Bill throughout the years.  As an added bonus, we’ll get to Bill fire off weapons and blow up stuff in between.  All fun aside, let’s remember the men and women who perished in combat while we take a journey through Bill the Goat’s decorated achievements, both live and plush style.

Crib Sheet: Coaching Carousel

Coaches come and coaches go, but we can’t believe how things are getting turned around in the very start of this off season.   Coaches leaving.  Coaches coming.  Some with long tenures, some with short.  The heads at the KCCGD headquarters are still a little scrambled.  Fortunately, we have this week’s Crib Sheet to help sort things out.  We’re sure you are about as confused as we are so let’s get right to it:

  • Missouri apologized for its band playing over the Navy’s fight song during their bowl game earlier.  It was the only thing they had over Navy in that game.  Navy’s still tooting their horn over the thumping they gave the Tigers.
  • South Florida fired Jim Leavitt after allegations of Leavitt beating up some kids.  The hammer is falling fast on tough coaches and it looks as though it will continue.  It almost seems like that’s enough for colleges to get out from under big contracts.  Either that or in this time and age you tell you assistant coach to rough up a kind instead of yourself.  So, Jim, take a deep breath and come back home to K-State.  Or hire a lawyer.
  • Meanwhile, on the fired coaches trip, Mike Leach accuses Texas Tech of slander and libel due to the fallout from his firing as head coach.  Leach’s camp states that the allegations from his treatment of Adam James hurts Leach’s reputation and his ability to get another job.  This legal battle will play out for a long time.  As you guessed it, Texas Tech asked the court to throw the case out.
  • In the meantime, Texas Tech already hired Tommy Tubberville as their new head coach.  He’s been trolling around for a new job since he got canned from Auburn.  He was displaying interest in Kansas when that job opened up.  Looks like Tech found a good replacement.
  • While we are in Texas, the Longhorns trainer officially told the press that there was no way Colt McCoy could continue to play in the BCS National Championship.  A pinched nerve and a dead arm is a serious thing.  Apparently, Colt tossed the ball to his high school coach dad and could only muster 7 yards in the locker room.  This will seal the deal on the mystery of Colt and what could of happened.
  • Nick Montana, son of NFL Hall of Famer Joe Montana, returns to Notre Dame this year after a year away at community college.  It wasn’t because of grades, it was because he was not physically in shape for college ball.  We don’t think he’ll be a starter quick but it’s nice to see that a former Domer’s kid can make the same team.
  • Pete Carroll is your new NFL Seattle Seahawks head coach.  He talked about the process earlier this week.  The rumor mill was all over the place since Friday and Monday confirmed it.  There’s going to be a huge hole at USC and we’re still not sure who can fill it next.  Tune in next week.
  • When rumors of a coach leaving a school pops up, you tend to see other schools scramble to keep their coach.  Such is the case with Oregon State and Mike Riley.  He’s been really good with the Beavers and even the faintest rumor of a USC job got him a 3 year extension.
  • So who did USC get?  Well, Lane Kiffin, of course!  Rumors were flying all over about new candidates, but the former NFL Oakland Raiders head coach and now former Tennessee Volunteers head coach will take over.  Kiffin was an alumni for USC and a former Offensive Coordinator under Pete Carroll.  The time was really short for Kiffin’s tenures at both the pros and the college ranks.  We’re thinking that this is a ‘coming home’ type situation and that he’ll be there at least 3 years.  Hopefully.
  • So who’s number one for Tennessee now?  (Getting kind of ridiculous, isn’t it?)  Welp, Texas Defensive Coordinator and head coach heir Will Muschamp.  He was on the list last year when the Vols needed a coach so this will be the same kind of dance again.  Wethinks that Will’s getting another massive pay raise.
  • Colt McCoy’s moving on with life after a BCS Championship injury.  He proposed to his girlfriend at the Longhorns’ Memorial stadium.  It’s not as sweet as the Boise State guy doing it during the game, but it’s still a very sweet play on McCoy.

Bowl Pick It Standings: The Holiday is Over

The holidays are over and we have just 4 games left to go on the Bowl Pick It and Stick It.  We here at the KCCGD all feel about 10 pounds heavier after chugging through the holiday foods and drinks.  So while we go map out a plan to lose the flab, check out the latest updates.  Please note:  there are some games left off from the results that we are saving for the last update.  The final numbers will be a little off.  That said, here’s the update:

Breaking Away From Barspotting

army-navy-1946-crockett

What, you say?  No barspot this week?  That is correct.  As much as we’d like to go out and watch Army vs.  Navy, we think we deserve a little break from going out to bars and watching football.  It sounds crazy, but it could be alot of work.  So in the interest of being brief, check back regularly as we go over the bowl schedule and knock out some bowlspots here and there.  Also, we’ll have some year end reviews and probably something really nice for you kids for the BCS National Championship.

Barspotting: Pointing to the Scoreboards

scoreboards

This week finds us in the middle of Johnson County and at a neat little place called Scoreboards.  We’ve been there before the blog started off and we’re pretty sure it’s a good time.  There used to be a Scoreboards in Manhattan but we don’t think it’s the same bar.  Sometimes sports bars survive on their own without a website, but we think these guys could use one.  It was super hard to find a pic or logo of the place.  Maybe we can open up a KCCGD hosted space for bars around the area.   Or post some ideas for Scoreboards below and we’ll talk to the manager Saturday.

Tanner’s Helps Us Kickoff the Year Right

Hey Hey, My My, College football will never die.  And neither will KC College GameDay.  We’re back again for another year for fantastic football watchin’ and we kicked off the Labor Day weekend full of football at Tanner’s Bar & Grill in the the Waldo district.  There are many a Tanner’s in the KC area (as well as some out of area locations) and they have always been known to be a top notch sporting experience. This location, proved to be right there, even though some trip ups in service and specials hurt it a bit.  We also get to go over a new game for you arcadians out there.  But there’s much, much more.

Mascot Monday: Blackjack and the Mule

Blackjack

This Memorial Day we figured we would take a look back into one of the oldest mascots while paying our respects to the military with a retrospective of the Army Black Knights mule and the more recent Blackjack.  The prospects of Army playing at the new Yankee Stadium also influenced our pick this week, admittedly.  The inclusion of the mule for the Black Knights football team is a great story and the addition of a costumed mascot is a nice side dish to the main mascot course.  KCCGD pays its respects and we hope you take some time today to do as well.
