Barspotting: Championship Saturday At Lew’s Grill & Bar

Every year we go back to the best bar of the year and this time around it’s Lew’s Grill & Bar.  It’s a solid performer that doesn’t let us down in terms of big game watching.   Sure it’s small for its size, but it packs a punch in terms of factors for a great place to watch sports.  So we’ll try one last time to get Das Boot and watch the SEC Championship Game as well as the Civil War.   What, no Big 12 Championship Game?  Welp, I will be at a company holiday party while it’s going on and for this weekend, an open bar trumps a title game with Nebraska in it.

Homespotting is Where the Heart is

It’s been a long, food filled holiday weekend and of all the times I’ve been out and about the last three years, I can say that being home for four days was the perfect change of pace.  There’s plenty of bars out there for me to frequent, both old and new, but for this week’s barspot I wanted to do something different.  Maybe it was celebrating being in a new home or maybe I was just too tired to try to marathon 3 straight days of football at a bar, but it was hight time to spent some home time.  So this week, I’ll review my time at home and gives ome pointers on how to do it right.

Homespotting: My Home and Yours for Turkey Day Weekend

You know, when I started this blog, it was all about going out.  My main reason was to watch college football at its maximum potential.  I couldn’t afford a rig so a bar was the next best thing.  I’ve watched some football before at home but this time I’m going all out.  The games are spread out perfectly, not unlike a Thanksgiving dinner, this weekend so I figured what better way to graze on the games while I graze on leftovers by staying home and watching it from KCCGD Headquarters.  Happy Thanksgiving to everyone out there and I hope you have as much fun watching the great action as I do.

JJ’s Other Place Was Decent The Second Try Around

Alrighty, the second try to watch some football at my favorite local neighborhood hole in the wall, JJ’s Other Place.  I’ve been there plenty at night and now I’ve been there during the day.  I’ll stick with being there at  night.  I forgot a couple of important items as well as the fact there wasn’t that much to watch that day.  It was a pretty good time nonetheless.   There were some upset a brewing as well as some traditional nachos brewing in my stomach.  Continue reading JJ’s Other Place Was Decent The Second Try Around

Barspotting: JJ’s Other Place Part II

Okay, I’m giving JJ’s Other Place one more shot.  They didn’t have power for our game last week, even though they were open that evening.  So I’m going back to give them a college try for this Saturday.  The morning games all suck, but once the afternoon hits we get some Top 25 clashes.  Let’s hope that they will have a enough juice for the week for use to enjoy at least one of those.  The backup plan, for the first time ever, is Lew’s Grill and Bar.  What can I say, it’s my new favorite place. JJ’s Other Place Was Closed Due To Lack Of Power

No seriously.  KCP&L cut off JJ’s Other Place’s power and was closed for the day.  I was pumped about heading to my favorite hole in the wall to watch some sports but it was a no go.  They recently upgraded their televisions and now  I know where the money came from.  No worries, folks.  I won’t cut you off, but I may cut this one a little bit short.  Long story short, I went to Lew’s and watch Missouri trounce Kansas State.

Barspotting: JJ’s Other Place To Be

So as I’m sure most of you have gathered by now, I live mostly on the Kansas side of the state.  What could be even more insightful is the fact that I tool around the Shawnee Mission area.  So, out of the goodness of my heart and the laziness of my butt, I will be heading to my favorite hole in the wall sports bar, JJ’s Other Place, for some Barspotting Saturday.  There’s a big local throwdown as Kansas State heads to Missouri and I want to conjure some magic I shookdown from the joint for Kansas State’s basketball tournament run.  It could be a blowout, or it could be close.  At any rate, I’ll be down in JJ’s town for all of the glory.

Lazy Saturday for Lew’s

Another actual barspot and I’m keeping up on the known favorites with Lew’s Grill and Bar.  I’ve been here a couple of times and have begun to become a regular here.  They’ve upgraded the televisions and also the food.  The day of football was long and fun, so I was glad I got the sweet spot for watching in the bar.  Regarding the action on field, we saw some tight games and some surprising blowouts.  It was a lazy day, but it sure was a weird one too.

Barspotting: Settling In At Lew’s Grill and Bar

This year has been reunion tour at home and new bars plus stadiums on the road.  So to continue that tradition, this week’s barspot will be at Lew’s Grill and Bar in the Waldo district.  I haven’t built up the courage to double pop collars at The Well yet, so I’m heading back to a comfy place that’s just right with sports watching.  Since the last time we’ve been there, they’ve introduced Das Boot.  Yes, the boot featured in the number one hit smash comedy Beerfest.  So look for a pairing with that bad boy.  There’s also some great game pairings on tap as well.   Get ready to chug the football.

The Brooksider Let Us Down

So I’m sitting here on Halloween Sunday watching  a bit of The Evil Dead and I wished that I was doing that yesterday instead of hanging out at the Brooksider.  The former barspot of the year is on the last lap of some renovations and the changes were not all for the good.  Me and my crew headed out there for some Missouri and Nebraska action and we went away with a let down feeling in our stomach.  The feeling was both for the game and the bar.

Barspotting: The Brooksider is for Big Games

Can you believe it?  Yes, it’s a barspot this week!  I’m finally done with road trips and now I’m ready to sit my behind down at a Kansas City bar and watch some great games this weekend.  Missouri had a historic win and this weekend I feel like I need to throw all of my support behind the Tigers and watch the game at the legendary Brooksider.  They have the biggest plasma screen television around and I’ll be there to watch that and the Kansas State game.   Come on out and join me in the fun while we kick old stool.

When: Saturday, October 30 2010
Time: 11:00 AM
Where: The Brooksider Sports Bar & Grill, 6300 Brookside Plaza, Kansas City, MO 64113

Notes:  You know, it’s kind of light week.  All eyes will be on the Big 10 and Big 12 this weekend as the night games look pretty weak.  First off the road to the Big 10 title still goes through Iowa as Michigan State looks to stay undefeated.  It’s their 2nd time away from home and they barely escaped Northwestern last week.K  This should be a close one.  The one we’re going to see is Missouri and Nebraska.  One on hand you have the Tigers coming off their biggest win ever and on the other you have a farewell tour of a team bolting to the Big 10.  This one should be close too.  Come on out Saturday and help us spectate.

Stadiumspotting: Thursday Night Lights

This will be the first off day stadiumspotting for us and we’re super excited.  Kansas State hosts Nebraska for probably the last time ever and they are both undefeated.  The electricity will be huge in the Little Apple and we will be there to cover it.  Chances are we will make our way back to a bar Saturday but we’ll go ahead and tweet the location when we decided where.  Until then, it’s half day action at work then a split time of driving and football watching.  This Purple Yeti is more than pumped for the biggest game of the year for the Wildcats.

Tailgaters Sports Cafe Shuffled Us In and Out of Minneapolis

Okay so this will be a lil weird.  Barspotting found me outside of Kansas City again Saturday for the second week in a row.  This time, I was in Minnesota.  Minneapolis to be exact.  So prior obligations held me up north and by some crazy chance I was able to stumble into a sports bar up there to catch at least one football game.  Among the lessons learned on this trip was that regional football coverage can sometimes cramp your football watching style.  Well that and onion rings alone can be pretty tasty.

Barspotting: The Twin Cities Beckon

You know, I don’t know what it is with the travelling all of the sudden, but here we go again on our own.  Going down that only road that, well, leads straight from Kansas City to Minneapolis/St. Paul.  Otherwise I-35.  I’ve been (unofficially) down I-35 to Austin, Texas and now I’m heading up north to check out Minnesota.  Prior obligations find myself out there and I’m hoping to get some football down while I do it.  A little birdie told me that Minnesota is hosting Northwestern for homecoming so I might check it out.  Otherwise, it might be a great sports bar in town or more than likely Hooters at the Great Mall of America.  God I hope it’s the homecoming game.

Johnny’s Hall of Fame was not that Lame

Even thought the weekend at hand had more than just college football at play, we managed to make it out to a hot spot of sports for Des Moines, Iowa.  Granted it was in the downtown district and amazingly enough we got the same type of people out there that we see in downtown Kansas City.  Yeah, lots of Ed Hardy shirts. But even though the efforts of the douche bag army tried to stamp out our fun, we managed to kick it pretty well up there in God’s Country.  Recovery mode on.
