Crib Sheet: Pluggin Up the Expansion Spill Hole

Okay, we are begging to plug up the hole speculation regarding the Big 10 expansion.  Our series covered what we think and we’ve had just about enough talk to last us awhile.  It’s time to start focusing on real football and clean up for the mess left behind from the slick speculation.  Don’t worry, we’ll leave the camera on while we do it.  We’ll also leave it up to the Crib Sheet if you need your fix.  Here ya go:

  • Where Joe Paterno wants the Big 10 Conference to expand, his kid Jay doesn’t.  His major point is the erosion of rivalries that kept the league strong for so many years.  You’d think the tradition argument would come from the old Paterno and not the young one.
  • BCS Commissioner Bill Hancock responded to Congress’ questions on the BCS with a 5 page letter basically telling them to back off.  Money’s at play here and it looks like Washington wants to step in an regulate some flow their way.  Is this really the right way to get to a college football playoff?
  • Tulsa World columnist Dave Sittler layed the smack down on Missouri athletics last week.  The Tigers spend more money than five schools in the Big 12 and only has 8 championships to claim.  That’s the lowest in the conference.  Does the Big 10 really want to invite a traditional loser?
  • A bunch of big wigs piled onto both Texas Tech and former head coach Mike Leach for the handling of concussed daddy’s boy Adam James.  House Judiciary Committee member Linda Sanchez and NFLPA doctor Thom Mayer both were wondering why the injury was hidden and not available for doctors to treat.  Nasty drama aside, the doctor’s should be there to help treat players if they get a concussion.
  • Remember all of the hub-bub about Michigan getting in trouble over practicing players too much?  Well, today the university self-imposed restrictions to head off and NCAA troubles.  Essentially they are cutting back practicing hours and shrinking down some of the coaching staff.  Will this affect the Wolverines play next year?
  • Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops weighed on the expansion speculation, telling reporters that the Sooners would be a good fit anywhere.  Way to really stand out on the ledge Bobby.  Sure the Sooners would be great anywhere, how does that add any more insight into the expansion talk?  What we have here is coach talk 101.  You say your team is the best no matter the scenario.

So I’m just now getting back into the swing of things now that I’m back from the SXSW conference.  The yearly Music/Film/Interactive conference can take a toll on your body and even though I got back Monday, I’m still feeling the effect.  The drive there uses I-35 and actually hits up a couple of college towns.  Big 12 wise, we sped through Oklahoma’s home in Norman and landed in Austin, the home of the Texas Longhorns.  Which one is better?  It’s not fair, really.  The conference was in Austin and I only drove through Oklahoma.  Now here’s this week’s Crib Sheet:

  • Speaking of Texas, apparently they are hitting the eiquette skills as well as the plyometric skills down in Austin.  If you are going to be a football dignitary, the I guess you would need to know how to flaunt elitist like chops.  Do they really need to know how to hold a fork right when tearing into some ribs from the Salt Lick, however?
  • Much ballyhooed recruit Bryce Brown has left the Tennessee program, due to either personal issues or the fact that Lane Kiffin left.  So let the rumor mills begin again!  First one out of the gate:  Bryce’s brother left Miami and is heading the K-State.  So that means there may be a chance Bryce will come play for Bill Snyder 2.0 and the Wildcats.  I hope the second round of hype around Bryce is faster.
  • Weakened and ill coach Urban Meyer returned to the Florida Gators and practice last week.  If you remember he quit the team due to health reasons but then came back when he realized that he could get better.  Or at least put on some poundage.  This year will be a nice off year for Meyer so he can reload next year, both on football and his health.
  • Just like when baseball’s Chicago Cubs shocked everyone and had its first ever night game a decade or two ago, now the Big House in Michigan will be doing the same.  What better way to do so than against the Notre Dame Fighthing Irish?  This should be a close game, with a new coach on one side and another almost on the hot seat.
  • Nick Saban is your first ever Bobby Bowden national collegiate coach of the year.  The Over the Mountain Touchdown Club is in Bowden’s home town of Birmingham, Alabama.  Not much surprise here.  The coach that wins the national title for the school in the home state of the award title’s name.  Zlam Dunk.
  • Expansion or not, the Pac 10 may be looking into instituting a conference title game.  Commissioner Larry Scott mentioned that when going over all expansion possibilities with CBS Sports.  There’s an NCAA rule that states you need to have 12 teams to have a conference title game.  So if they do want to do it without expansion, then they need to change that rule.

Okay, freshly back from a wedding in California (not MY wedding), I’m now ready to actually talk about the BCS title game and the year that was college football.  We’re going to talk about the game that could’ve been, the season that was bookended by injuries, and some other interesting notes that popped up over the season.  So, while this is a little late, sit back and enjoy us on your little trip through college football memory lane.  Please keep your arms and head inside the windows.

Alrighty,  we are in the 1st quarter of bowl season and fortunately we don’t have any Big 12 bowl games until next week.  So we have the opportunity to preview and predict what’s coming up in the next couple of weeks for the Big 12.  We’ll talk briefly about the match up and go into our expert predictions.  Chew on this while you are doing your last minute shopping on Amazon.  Oh and please pick us up something nice while you’re at it.

Seeing as I graduated from K-State, I figured I would cover them just a little more than the rest of the area teams in Kansas City. If any other fans/alumni of schools around the area want to write for this site, please drop us a line.  That said, everyone predicted that K-State would drop as well this year.  What was expected to be a major blow off year turned into a massive surprise.  K-State fans should be more than happy with what turned out this year in Wildcat football.  It wasn’t perfect, but it was damn close.

The holiday weekend was rough on us and we barely made it back to Kansas City in time for some prime college football. Our hair was as greasy as the fried turkey we gobbled up for meal number two Thursday. But we made in, dropped off our stuff,, and headed to North Kansas City and Chappell’s Sports Museum and Restaurant. After running the gauntlet of food and family over the weekend it was nice to dig into the warmth and surprisingly quiet Chappell’s.

Last week was the beginning of Rivalry Week and now we are fully realizing its end.  We had out schedule jacked up due to Thanksgiving and we’re sure you’ve had yours as well.  It’s all for a good thing, however, as we should give thanks to what we have at least once a year.  So in celebration of Thanksgiving and our shortened week, we are combining our Barspotting and Pick It and Stick It posts.  And without further ado, we are Barspotting at Chappell’s Saturday.  Yes, we’ll be just back in town to watch the Border War between Kansas and Missouri.  We’re going up to North Kansas City and watchin some football as well as checking out their collection of sports memorabilia.   Thankfully, we are just in time to go over the picks too and we hope you didn’t forget to make yours on this short week.

Rivalries are abound as just about every game on the list is a rivalry.  So in between the turkey and gravy and shopping and family, check out these games.  Some of them sound cool like the Duel in the Desert with Arizona and Arizona State.  Some of them sound goofy like the Egg Bowl with Ole Miss at Mississippi State.  No matter the name, they all mean something big to the teams and offer up a tradition only seen in college football.  Big 12 wise, we missed out on the Nebraska and Colorado game but that’s alright.  Nebraska won and it didn’t matter.  We have the Bedlam series for Oklahoma State and Oklahoma tomorrow.  The ‘Pokes will get a good shot at a BCS bid provided they win and Texas does next week against said Cornhuskers.  The other major game for the Big 12 is the Border War.  Kansas needs a win to be bowl eligible and Missouri needs a win to get 2nd in the North.  Who’s gonna win?  Come on out to Chappell’s and help us find out.

GameDay: Bringing Back the D

Last year, the Big 12 was a flutter with big time scoring led by big time spread offenses.  This year,  it’s more of a sputtering of offense here and there.  Sure, there have been big scores but it’s mainly been in the form of blowouts.  Shootouts are rare this year as we’re seeing scores like last week’s 10-7 barn burner in Lincoln.  Where did the offense go?  Did the defense show back up?  A couple of factors help lead into why we are seeing such a down turn in offense this year.

Manhattan Makes Us Miss The College Life

The Manhattan Miracle was once thought to be just a one time thing.  Fast forward to 2009 and we now know it never left.  Are we talking about football?  Partly.  We’re also talking about the little city of Manhattan and the miracle that it can play with the big dogs when it comes to having a great time.   We revisited some old school places and discovered some new ones.  Then we went to the Sunflower Showdown and witnessed the rise of the miracle on the field.  All in all it was a top notch time and we were happy to see the good ole days just one more time.

Stadiumspotting: Sunflower Showdown in the Little Apple

We make our return to the beautiful city of Manhattan, Kansas to watch Kansas head to Kansas State for 107th meeting of the Sunflower Showdown.  The KCCGD crew was down there a couple of years ago for the Missouri game and it’s been awhile since we made our way back.  We’ll head to Bill Snyder Family Stadium and watch the action on Wagner Field.  We already scoped out some tailgating spots and we’ll be sure to nab some cheesecake on a stick.  We also hope this game won’t be a stinker because it’s a must win for Kansas and a driver’s seat spot for Kansas State.  This will be big and we will be there.

Halloween is over and we’re still feeling the hurt over the load of candy and Joose.  We rocked many parties and kinda wished we were at one that had Kansas State at Oklahoma on.  Oh well.  We are still enjoying the various fun sizes of candy.  Our favorites include Snickers, Butterfinger, and Milky Way.  But enough about candy.  We’re sweet on the Pick It Standings now.  We also have some tasty BCS standings to go over as the polls turned sweeter to some winning teams over some other teams that had some sour victorious.  Get your toothbrush ready, you’ll need it after this.

Okay, after a road trip to Lawrence, we were back in the saddle of barspotting and what better place to do it at than none other than Coach’s Bar & Grill.  Coach’s advertises only the best in sports bars as well as being one of the oldest in Kansas City.  We spotted some sweet games there and also enjoyed the festivities, it was Halloween you know.  Some things surprised us and some things spooked us.  Read on for some chilling tales and pray that you survive the night, er, post.

Crib Sheet: Too Full to Write, Seriously

We have a full plate here this week on the Crib Sheet so in the interest of avoiding any more food references we stuffed into the last couple of posts, here’s this week’s Crib Sheet:

  • Steve Spurrier, South Carolina head coach, complained about tape on the field after their shilacking they took from Alabama last week.  So Alabama head coach Nick Saban says they won’t do it again.  The kickers were using to place kicks and now the need some other guide to help the ball find the way.  Southeastern Conference:  Home of the Ticky Tacky Whining.
  • Orrin Hatch is poking an prodding his trident in the direction of the Justice Department and President Obama, trying to get a probe of the BCS system again.  Hey, it’s an easy target in Utah and we hope he gets relected for all of this posturing and grand standing.  Once again, this shows that people from Utah suck.
  • The officiating crew from last week’s Florida and Arkansas game were suspended due to a blown personal foul call against an Arkansas player.  When you are Florida and on top, the calls will go your way.  Southeastern Conference:  Home of Protecting the Frontrunners.
  • While LeBron James is busy kicking out professional football players, he’s also giving advice to Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor.  James says he’s trying to help Pryor handle being a super star athelete.  What?  You have to win games, and more importantly championships, to be a super star.  Right now Pryor is the head guy for a lame-o offense.  An offense that just got upset by Purdue.
  • When Texas Tech loses bad, count on Mike Leech to say something witty about it.  This time, it was something about fat girlfriends.  We love him even though his team usually rolls Big 12 North teams.
  • The Dallas Fort Worth airport and American Airlines are now doing direct flights to Manhattan, Kansas.  What does that mean?  Recruiting trips for Kansas State will be less of convenience.  The Wildcats had to cut costs for private flights which meant planes going to Topeka or Kansas City held recruits.  Will this help?  Who knows.
  • Goldy Gopher got the slap down for mocking prayer at the beginning of a game last week.  I can see that happening if they played Notre Dame or Boston College, but doing it before a Penn State game is a little ridiculous.  His punishment?  10 Hail Marys and a bad football team.
  • Bob Griese will have to sit a game for making a taco joke on a latino NASCAR driver.  Was it because it was racially insensitive or because it was a really bad joke?  Griese did get his education at Michigan, you know.
  • Speaking of Michigan, there’s a letter of inquiry from the NCAA about the whole practicing too long trouble some players kicked up a month ago.  How could the Wolverines be practicing too hard?  They’re terrible.  Maybe if they were undefeated but they stink too much to be practicing too long.  If anything, they are not practicing enough.
  • Much to no one’s surprise, Sam Bradford will have a season ending shoulder surgery and then enter the NFL draft.  It seemed a little awkward when Bradford left the Texas game a couple of weeks ago.  The hit wasn’t as massive as the first injury.  Right then I think we all knew Bradford wasn’t gonna chance it.  So will he do well in the NFL?  Tune in and find out if we ever kick up a KC GameDay blog.
  • Iowa Governor Chet Culver goofed up and congratulated only Iowa in a historic win over the weekend.  Yes, the Hawkeyes are 8-0 for the first time in forever, but it seems he forgot the Iowa State win over Nebraska in Nebraska for the first time since 1977.  If the Cyclones make a bowl, this guy will be elected out of the office.
  • John William Lomax III will be charged in the murder of UConn football Jasper Howard.  He went to the party but his lawyer says he has nothing to do with it.  We’ll find out in court just what happened.
  • The NCAA ruled that Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant will be suspended for the rest of the season.  He lied to the NCAA when they went sniffing around a visit he had with Deion Sanders.  This seems a little harsh.  With other players punching people and coming back, you’d figure they would let him come back and play.  To bad for the Cowpokes as they could use him against Texas this weekend.

Another Lawrence Trip in the Bag

This is the second year in we rocked our KCCGD crew all the way out to Lawrence, Kansas and hit up Memorial Stadium.  The Purple Yeti’s wonderful girlfriend and her company provided the tickets and bus ride to watch Oklahoma take on Kansas.  The tailgate had the usual fair, all while we weathered the fair weather at the stadium.  That game itself was nowhere near fair and for the second year in a row, we left the stadium to go back to tent before the final whistle blew.  There were a couple of notable differences from last year but that didn’t drag us down for this year’s first edition of Stadiumspotting.
