Happy Holidays everybody from the KC College Gameday Crew! It’s been a couple of years now of doing this blog and we’ve learned alot along the way. We also are very thankful for all 12 of you that actually read this internet football rag. It’s not a perfect blog and we strive hard everyday just to make it a little bit better. We wished it could be perfect, but sometimes great things come from imperfections. Much along those same lines, we have Christmas wishes we want to share with you this holiday season:

Crib Sheet: Silent Night, Bowl-y Night
Welp last week was a big rush. This week, all is calm and all is bright. Christmas is in a couple of days and we are expecting some major snow. So we can chalk up the lack of news to that and everyone getting ready for bowls. We are done with Christmas shopping and got our Topsy’s popcorn, so we will be taking a few days off ourselves. We’ll probably do something around Christmas, but look for a Bowl Pick It update Monday. Until then here is this week’s meek little Crib Sheet:
- Former Kansas coach Mark Mangino gets a $3 million settlement from the university for his resignation and termination fo his contract. He had about $9 million left to go. Welp he doesn’t have to work for a couple of more years and gets a fat holiday check. Mangino made out pretty well.
- It looks like Bill Snyder 2.0 and the Wildcats are looking to pick up scraps leftover from new Kansas head coach Turner Gill’s blowout of the staff. They are interviewing former defensive coordinator Clint Bowen to fill the vacancy left by Vic Koenning’s departure to Illinois. This has happened before. Joe Bob Clements went to Kansas as a defensive line coach even though he played for Kansas State. He went back home to Snyder 2.0 though and we won’t be surprised if Bowen doesn’t do the same thing.
- It seems the Big 10 expansion talks have stirred up issues in the Big 12. Commissioner Dan Beebe expects no change for the Big 12 but glosses over the issues currently in the conference. Namely, revenue sharing and setting up a television network. Hey, maybe it will light a fire under the conference to pony up and compete with the other big conferences media-wise.
- Even though he didn’t come home with a Heisman, Ndamukong Suh has been picking up plenty of awards. The latest one happens to be the AP Player of the Year. This is the first time a defensive player ever won the award. I’m sure his Nebraska head coach, Bo Pelini, congratulated him while chewing gum openly.
Kansas State Wildcats 2009 Year End Review
Seeing as I graduated from K-State, I figured I would cover them just a little more than the rest of the area teams in Kansas City. If any other fans/alumni of schools around the area want to write for this site, please drop us a line. That said, everyone predicted that K-State would drop as well this year. What was expected to be a major blow off year turned into a massive surprise. K-State fans should be more than happy with what turned out this year in Wildcat football. It wasn’t perfect, but it was damn close.
810 Zone Dishes Out a Pricey Time
Finally, the KCCGD has come BACK to Leewood, Kansas! Okay, we’re not too much into old school wrestling references, but we had to set the tone on how we felt within the walls of the 810 Zone. We all aren’t wrestling fans and we don’t live in trailers. In fact we’re pretty normal. But compared the crowd out there, we certainly felt that way. Even so, we ended up having a pretty good time. Our wallets felt the pain however. So did the Kansas State Wildcats as they tried to win the Big 12 North against Nebraska. Oh the times we had.
GameDay: Bringing Back the D
Last year, the Big 12 was a flutter with big time scoring led by big time spread offenses. This year, it’s more of a sputtering of offense here and there. Sure, there have been big scores but it’s mainly been in the form of blowouts. Shootouts are rare this year as we’re seeing scores like last week’s 10-7 barn burner in Lincoln. Where did the offense go? Did the defense show back up? A couple of factors help lead into why we are seeing such a down turn in offense this year.
Manhattan Makes Us Miss The College Life
The Manhattan Miracle was once thought to be just a one time thing. Fast forward to 2009 and we now know it never left. Are we talking about football? Partly. We’re also talking about the little city of Manhattan and the miracle that it can play with the big dogs when it comes to having a great time. We revisited some old school places and discovered some new ones. Then we went to the Sunflower Showdown and witnessed the rise of the miracle on the field. All in all it was a top notch time and we were happy to see the good ole days just one more time.
GameDay: Going Old School
Ah, yes the Sunflower Showdown. I was at the game last year and it was a blowout. I’m heading to the game this year and it’s a homecoming in a way. I make no bones about being a K-Stater and while I do my best to be objective, the Purple Pride eeks out ahead. So when I go to the game today, I will be reliving the days of past when I was a student. I will also be going back to the source and inspiration for this website.
GameDay: They’re Creepy and They’re Cooky
No no, we didn’t forget you today on this all Hallow’s Eve. We just want to spook you out even more with today’s Game Day post. We’re a big fan of the macabre on top of football so we though it would be fun to match up the Big 12 coaches with various members of the Addams Family. If you remember the TV show and if you remember their New Yorker comics then you’re just too damn old. At any rate, most of these guys fit in nicely with each character and you’ll be ghoulishly laughing all along the way. Anything to take the thumping that the Big 12 South is putting on the Big 12 North off of our minds.
Crib Sheet: Out of Prime Time
Okay it’s Crib Sheet time and we need to talk to all of the aspiring wide receivers out there. Do not talk to Deion Sanders. The image above presents only a shrivel of evidence to support our position. Yes, he’s flashy. Yes, he preaches. Yes, he looks good in a suit. But nothing really good comes from working with the guy. Just ask Michael Crabtree. So consider this a public service announcement and please avoid Deion Sanders. Here’s this week’s Crib Sheet:
- The NCAA ruled Oklahoma State’s Dez Bryant ineligible for maybe the rest of the season for failure to disclose recent dealing with a former NFL player, Dei0n Sanders. Doh! We thought the prima donna wide receivers came from Texas Tech. We’re thinking after some personal consultation with Tony Dungy or something Dez will be let back on the field to play again. While Dez is doing that, Deion denies tampering, Mike Gundy and Oklahoma State supports him (needs him back in the lineup), and Dez will meet with the NCAA after his written apology.
- Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw has been ordered to take an anger management course. This stems from a domestic fight with his girl friend some time ago. She has to take the course too. Will it affect his play on the field? Tune in to find out.
- ESPN’s Tim Griffin writes that Texas is getting ready for the Red River Rivalry this weekend by listening to that god awful Boomer Sooner theme song over and over. That’s either going to help them tune it out or get them so angry and sick that they will take it out on Oklahoma this weekend. This could work wonders elsewhere. Possible water boarding replacement? We think so.
- A walk on Southern Miss player Peter Wilkes committed suicide over the weekend. We send our condolences out to his family. Apparently his dad suffered a heart attack and died over the summer. Wilkes decided to continue school for his dad but apparently it was too much.
- A female student was arrested during the Iowa and Arkansas State game for continuously yelling at player Adrian Clayborn. The student was warned multiple times and even given a restraining order. Stalking happens at both sides of the gender. Kinda funny that heckling could get somebody arrested, though.
- Dan Hawkins finally benched his son, Cody. Or did he? This will be the downfall to Hawkins and will serve as a lesson to all coaches out there. Don’t let your family mix with your coaching. Bill Snyder 2.0 knew this and retired to spend time with his family. He’s back now and you don’t see any of his kids on the field, coaching or playing.
- While we have another punch during the game in the form of Idaho linebacker Tre’Shawn Robinson and subsequent reprimanding, we also see a 1 game suspension to New Mexico head coach Mike Locksley for doing it off the field with an assistant coach. Football is a violent sport but save the punching for MMA.
- The Big 12 will play seven bowls games during the bowl season after this year. More importantly the toilet, er, Independence Bowl is off the docket. We also see the new New York City Bowl show up. Many a mediocre conference team fans rejoice in the pick of New York over Shreveport, Louisiana.
- Speaking of the bowls, the Cotton Bowl will move to Jerry Jones mecca that is Cowboys Stadium and the old place will have a new one called the Dallas Football Classic. It’s nice to see they are still using it but does that put the number of bowls in Texas at about 234? Hey, the more the merrier.
Nick and Jake’s is Half that Great
It was a different day Saturday afternoon. The cold spilled in over the midwest, the clouds filled the sky, and we were actually making the set of night games for the barspot. We huddled ourselves in the late afternoon/evening around the big bar in the sports bar section of Nick and Jake’s. Sports bar section you say? Yup, that’s different too. Nick and Jake’s really isn’t a sports bar. But yet, it is. Bar or not, the games on the television screens kept us nice and cozy.
GameDay: FARMAGEDDON HAS COME!
So the only real big game hyped up in the area this week is Kansas State taking on Iowa State at Arrowhead Stadium. The other local teams are on break and getting ready for conference play next week. This is a great opportunity for these two teams to showcase themselves (on a national spotlight even). Both programs are suffering a bit right now. Both of them will be run centric and defense heavy. Both have new coaches (albeit one is returning). Both teams were projected to be in the cellar of the Big 12 North this year. Well it may not mean much for everyone else, but it means the whole season for these two team.
For Iowa State, they’ve always been in the shadow of Iowa for years. Sure, there’s been times when the Cyclones were up and the Hawkeyes were down. But last year and especially this year, Iowa State is taking a back seat. They axed coach McCarthy last year and ended up with what looks like a trade with Auburn. McCarthy went on the head coach the Tigers where Iowa State got defensive coordinator Paul Rhodes. It’s a new regime for the Cyclones and expectations are that this guy will be instilling defense into a league that forgot how to spell it.
Meanwhile, Manhattan’s favorite son has returned in the form of Bill Snyder 2.0 to build back the program that was once a national title contender. After the embarrassing skid mark that was Ron Prince, Snyder 2.0 is back to bring street cred back to the Wildcats. And he’s doing it in the same way that Rhodes is trying to do up north. Defense and a big ole running game is what was missing last year and Snyder 2.0 is hell bent on bringing it back. Fortunately he has help in a JuCo transfer by the name of Daniel Thomas to help lead the way.
So today’s game is much more than deciding who will share the cellar with Colorado in the Big 12 North this year. It’s a progress game. The winner will have a better shot at making the most improvement this year. The loser will have to eat it and plan on building for much longer. Being the Kansas State grad that I am, I’m pulling for Snyder 2.0. But I think the fact that I’m not going to Arrowhead shows just how close this game might be. Let’s hope it’s not on ugly game on both sides of the field. Now off to the bunker. IT’S FARMADGEDDON!
Crib Sheet: Layeth the Smacketh Down
There’s alot of violence going around in college football recently. Well, more violence than usual. Yes, there’s the pads a poppin’ but more and more we see fisticuffs break out. Whether it’s on the field or off, there’s been some smacking and smack talking cropping up all over. So pay attention to this week’s Crib Sheet. We have some lessons to teach. If you smellllllll, what the Crib Sheet, is cookin’!
- Rick Neuheisel and Bill Snyder 2.0 go way back, as Kevin Haskin writes. It seems that during the rebuilding process in Manhattan, Snyder 2.0 targeted the Buffaloes first instead of going for the top team in the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Neuheisel was the coach for Colorado at the time. So these guys know each other well. INSERT RECAP
- Collins Okafor is the second running back to leave the Nebraska Cornhusker squad. I guess Bo Pelini had confidence in the other two guys up for the position. Let’s hope none of those two get injured. But wait! He’s Back!
- So there have been complaints of Michigan’s Jonas Mouton tossing punches at Notre Dame’s Eric Olsen from their matchup a couple of weeks ago. Then to top it off, Rich Rodriguez claims he never saw it even when the video came out. Plus Mouton will not get punished for the haymaker he tossed. Talk about a total classless decision. Especially after that hoopla with Oregon’s LeGarrette Blount. We know what should. Check out the video and let us know what this guy should get (oh wait, yup he got a one game suspension):
- To be fair, Golden Tate did a nose dive on the Michigan State stands during Notre Dame’s victory over the Spartans. Yup no one helped him. Lambeau leap this ain’t:
- Texas A&M’s Uzoma Nwachukwu is loving life as the big man (and frosh) on campus this week. Nwachukwu scored a touchdown on each of his four touches last weekend against Utah State. I’m not sure what’s more surprising, the fact that the Aggies are undefeated and 2nd in the Big 12 South standings or the pronunciation of his name.
- Fans who were kicked out of Minnesota’s home games for drunkenness will have to take a breathalyzer test the next time they try to attend a game. That makes alot of sense since it’s for the student section only and protects the fans from the wild tailgating that students put on before the game. I should know. I’ve been part of many of those.
- In this week’s lesson on smack talking, Tennessee’s Lane Kiffin fires back accordingly when Urban Meyer made up excuses about how close the Florida and Tennessee game was last week. That’s good stuff. Remember never to back down if someone returns the shot you fired first.
- Kansas football players and basketball players can’t get along. Point guard Tyshawn Taylor ended up with a dislocated thumb after a frucus broke out in front the university’s student union. Here’s a tip, the only other type of athletes that can mess with football players are wrestlers. Anybody else, prepare to get injured.
Crib Sheet: Need More Cowbell
It’s another week of college football news and we are getting into a rhythm. Most of the news churns up and out on Saturday and Sunday now. I would say the amount of news tripled since the start of the season. But we are taking it all in and making some sweet music for you to kick back and zone out on. Let’s just consider this the greatest hits collection from the week. Like any good compilation we have peaks and valleys then finish off with a strong note. And no Kanye. Now that’s what I call Crib Sheet! Rock on below:
- Steve Sipple from HuskersExtra.com talks about how the Cornhuskers are scheduling weak opponents and acceptance of such philosophy. Welcome to what the Kansas State Wildcats did every year. Now everyone is doing it. Hey, at least they fill a slot in with a quality opponent. They have Virginia Tech coming up.
- Speaking of the Wildcats, Bill Snyder 2.0 just inked a 5 year, $10 million dollar deal with program. They had to sign a new one with the new school president and athletic director. But five years? He can probably leave whenever and take a paper pushing job with the department when he’s done. Hopefully he will have turned the program around in three.
- Apparently swine flu is breaking out all over on football teams across the country. They need to start washing their hands and behind their ears before practices and such. Weren’t players supposed to be bigger, faster, and tougher in the new millennium? Since when did a flu cause a freak out? Man up, players (but don’t shake my hand).
- Erin Andrews, resident ESPN sideline hottie, told her story on Oprah last week. For those of you who don’t know, or listen to the news, Andrews was filmed nude by a peeping tom in some hotel room a couple of weeks ago. She stated that she thought her career was over. Um, she’s seriously mistaken. If anything her nudity made her more popular. Just talk to every Hollywood actress out there. They dip into the nude pool when their careers are threatened.
- Just in cased you missed it, Stephen F. Austin barely beat Texas College 92 – 0 last weekend. That’s right. Not 9, not 2, but 92 points. It’s nice to see some joystick scores on the field every once in awhile but this is ridiculous. Texas College should’ve hit the restart button.
- The power went out before the half of the Montana vs UC-Davis game over the weekend too. It took some time for the UC-Davis staff to get it up and going. The home field advantage wasn’t enough, however as Montana went on to win 17-10.
- Even though highly touted Colorado is 0-2, Dan Hawkins job might be safe. ESPN Big 12 blogger Tim Griffin talks about how broke the Buffaloes are and why buying Hawkins out could hurt more. That’s real good news for every other team in the Big 12 North.
- You’d figure after losing a close game that you can talk about it with a little class. But Notre Dame’s Charlie Weiss dashes all hopes of respectfully losing by blaming the Big 10 officials in their last second loss to Michigan last week. The schedule is weak enough for the Domers to finish with a double digit win record. Focus on that Weiss.
- Oklahoma fans from around the globe are supporting Landry Jones and his pencil thin mustache. Even the American Mustache Institute chimed in for their support of the molestache. Considering how he’s played on the field so far, there shouldn’t be any complaints about that mouth hugger.
Johnny’s Tavern has the Power and the Light
We were very skeptical when we strolled toward the Johnny’s Tavern setup on the corner of the Power & Light District in Downtown Kansas City. We’ve been to a couple of places around there before and the experiences were weak. We had some hope, however, as Johnny’s Tavern came through for us before. After spending the afternoon there we can say it is the best bar in the district. The food was great, the poker game was loads of fun, and the games on the screens were stellar. If you own or work at a bar around that area, read on to see how to make it successful.

Crib Sheet: Going Prime Time
Hey guess what? The Crib Sheet is BACK for the regular season. We enjoyed digging up some tasty news nuggest during the offseason so much that we are going to roll it into the regular season rotation. That’s great news alone. So for those of you not familiar with the format, let us explain what the Crib Sheet is all about: We scour the interwebs for stories not hears too well and stories that are local to the Kansas City area, adding our unique twist on it. So rejoice in its return and enjoy this week’s Crib Sheet:
- Indiana is cashing in big time by giving up a home game in 2010 and playing Penn State at FedEx Field, home of the NFL Washington Redskins. It looks like this trend is here to stay with college teams playing in pro football (and baseball) stadiums. I guess it will work out for schools that get major payouts, $3 million for Indiana, but it still sucks that hometown fans have to travel or miss out on games.
- Tennessee running back Bryce Brown is cleared of any NCAA violations for questions in his recruiting process. Now he can focus on becoming yet another highly touted athlete with a dark, questionable past. Sometimes the news just writes itself.
- John Malkovic: Actor chimes in on the upcoming college football season. He doesn’t say anything too outrageous and we’re glad to see that hoity toity actors can enjoy the grid iron as well. We’re not so sure, however, how coaches turned actors will fare. Yikes!
- So, everything is big in the new Cowboys stadium. Check. Tons of college football teams are playing there as well. Check. The Oklahoma vs BYU game is sold out. Check. $25 for outside concourse access only. WHAT? We get that the mega stadium will draw mega bucks, but when you’re not even in the dang stadium, you shouldn’t have to drop that chunk of change just to be there.
- Mike Gundy’s blackout to prepare for Georgia led to an arrest for one player and another leaving the team. Doh! It looks as though locking things down loosened up the team a bit. Will they get it together before their big opener? Tune in this weekend.
- St. Paul, a division II school, canceled its season opener because they don’t have helmets or pads. WHAT? It’s not that they couldn’t afford it, but the numnuts who ordered waited a little bit too late. They should put that guy in a tackling dummy and let the team try out the new gear on him.
- Blaine Gabbert locked up the starting job at Missouri. Now the fight for number 2 just got easier. The other Blaine, Blaine Dalton, was booted off the team for a DUI arrest. That’s alright, though, as it sounds like the Tiger’s focus this year may be more running intensive.
- The Alamo Bowl replaced the Big 10 opponent in favor of a Pac 10 number 2. That should heat up the competition for the Big 12 and give more legitimacy as big time conferences for both parties involved.
- Apparently Jim Harbaugh, with help from a booster, now has a $50-$70k toilet to do his business in at Stanford. So I guess when their season goes into the crapper, at least it will be comfortable and plush.
- Bill Snyder 2.0 named Carson Coffman as his starter going into the opener for the Kansas State Wildcats. Competition is a good thing, but he’s being consistent on this one. If anything, Snyder 2.0 is known to switch things up and play people in rotations. Grant Gregory, you still have a shot.
- Rich Rodriguez is taking it from all sides these days. We find out that current and former players are complaining about working too many hours for the football team, even though everyone does it and they he has an ally in Ohio State Buckeye players. An investigation is coming to get to the bottom of a rule no one follows. Now we hear him getting sued in a failed deal for land development in Virginia. Notice that the piece came from the Ann Arbor news website. Seriously, wait until half the season is over when they are looking to finish the same way they did last year. By then RichRod won’t be able to fight back the tears.
