That’s right, I’ll be on a plane shortly but I want to get the picks up for the week. It’s hard to stay focused with the Big 12 in legal gridlock. You know, I thought professional wrestling was soap opera for guys but now I know that college football realignment is the real deal. No offense to the WWE, but this stuff is way better than the scripted stuff I used to watch. So as the conference turn, get your picks in and hope for the best.
Yeah, so soon right? This weekend I’m forgoing my new home and heading up to Kansas City, the place I was born and raised. Long story short: I didn’t get a chance to visit the last time I was up there so I figured this weekend would be a good one to do so. It’s after Labor Day so the tickets were cheaper plus I get to watch my 2nd favorite team Notre Dame play my homey Jolly’s favorite team Michigan. Alrighty, football is here and you know what that means: Barspotting! For those of you not familiar with how Barspotting works, I basically tool around town and find places to watch college football then rate whether it’s worth it to check it out yourself. This year will be different because I’m in a whole new town. So I get to find a whole bunch of new bars review and also get the added benefit of finding my way around town. The first ever Austin edition of Barspotting will feature Doc’s Backyard in Sunset Valley, well, because they are real close to me. We are ever so close to the start of the college football season and ever so close to the end of this offseason’s edition of Mascot Mondays. This week, we are at Phil Steele’s number 39 in his preseason Top 50 poll for 2011 and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. There is, of course, another Bulldog team in the SEC and much like the other team, Mississippi State has both a live and a costumed mascot. Bully’s the name, and mascotting is both of their games. I am going to dig deep and find the Bully bone of history buried deep in Mississippi State’s backyard.
It’s another week of Mascot Monday and we’re heading up to the Great North…West! The Washington Huskies looked to be competitive last year with mega-stud quarterback Jake Locker at the helm. The season fizzled early with a beatdown from Nebraska but they totally redeemed themselves with a win over the Cornhuskers at the Holiday Bowl. This week we bring the freshness as both the live and costumed version of the mascots recently went under some improvements. We’ll also question why some universities don’t give enough love on their websites to mascots. Bring a coat, it’s gonna get just a tad bit chilly.
We’re still tucked away with snow here at KCCGD headquarters and it’s time to finally wind things down, college football wise. Spring practices and the draft is coming up, but that won’t be for a couple of months. This week’s Crib Sheet surely reflects that. Now I could waste a couple items with arrests and dismissals, but that happens every couple of weeks anyway. So grab yourself some hot cocoa, sit right back, and enjoy a nice little Crib Sheet:
The bowl season ended Monday and there was a ton of news that happened over the last week. It’s mostly who’s coming and who’s going. It’s what I like to call the Carousel Hell. So put your seatbelt on get ready to go round and round, here’s this week’s Crib Sheet:
It’s the middle of the bowl season and we’ve had some great games so far. What’s cool about this time right now, is that coaches are making jumps left and right, either to the NFL or back down from the NFL. Players are also declaring their intentions for the big time as well. So while we try to keep up with who’s going where and who’s staying, we get some great bowl action left. Well, at least through Monday. Until then, here’s the Crib Sheet:

No seriously. KCP&L cut off JJ’s Other Place’s power and was closed for the day. I was pumped about heading to my favorite hole in the wall to watch some sports but it was a no go. They recently upgraded their televisions and now I know where the money came from. No worries, folks. I won’t cut you off, but I may cut this one a little bit short. Long story short, I went to Lew’s and watch Missouri trounce Kansas State.

Okay, I have to take a couple of minutes to talk about the whole Cam Newton situation. It seems like in the last couple of weeks, there’s been a vendetta against this guy. Is it because he had a rough past? Or is it because the SEC can’t handle other teams doing well? At the end of the day, however, the discussion of players looking to get paid in college has come to a head. What I say is that you need to pay the players, even with more stipend or a more comprehensive scholarship.
So as I’m sure most of you have gathered by now, I live mostly on the Kansas side of the state. What could be even more insightful is the fact that I tool around the Shawnee Mission area. So, out of the goodness of my heart and the laziness of my butt, I will be heading to my favorite hole in the wall sports bar, JJ’s Other Place, for some Barspotting Saturday. There’s a big local throwdown as Kansas State heads to Missouri and I want to conjure some magic I shookdown from the joint for Kansas State’s basketball tournament run. It could be a blowout, or it could be close. At any rate, I’ll be down in JJ’s town for all of the glory.
Chilly times are ahead folks and its time to wrap yourself up into some nice and tasty picks. This week sees some hot action on the cold, cold fields of Lincoln, Nebraska. Will Missouri continue to roll or be tripped up by the scrappy Cornhuskers? No matter, we’ll be staying warm the best way we know. Hot chocolate helps. So does coffee or fried mac n’ cheese wedges. It looks as though the NFL cracked down on concussions and big time hits, doling out suspensions for head on collisions now. What does this mean for college football? Probably the same type of suspension. I’m not sure they will completely lock down like they do in the NFL. I’m guessing that this sport may be going away in the next 15 years, or at least it will turn into more of an arena style of play. Even for the colleges. Now check out the Crib Sheet:
